Too bad all the mods are closing every topic about picking a new charity to support.

Just post it on off-topic.

The drive was, as always, a little two-faced.

On one hand, it was a "let's do something nice with all these angry people" and in that sense, we succeeded beyond our wildest dreams. We donated $80,000 to Child's Play. Don't let ANYBODY tell you that was a bad thing. There are going to be a pile of happier children because of what we did. Believe me, it helps - I spent some time in a hospital when I was nine, and playing on the N64 that somebody donated was wonderful.

On the other hand, we also did it for our own reasons: To raise awareness of our grievances, to let people know we were more than just a rioting crowd of angry fans, and to disprove the "we're entitled gamers" myth.

While Child's Play was thematically appropriate, it shouldn't be a surprise that this happened. In retrospect, it would have been better to choose another charity that was a little more distant from what we're arguing about. Perhaps the Red Cross, or something, I don't know. Regardless, what's done is done.

Most importantly of all, I ask that everyone who donated PLEASE just let things lie. The cause is good, and the reason that it was shut down is understandable. Do not prove everyone that mocked our efforts right by asking for a return on your donation.

I still feel good about donating and I feel even better that amount accumulated went beyond expectations. Gotta take the little victories when you can.

I personally was very impressed by the charity drive and proud of all the community members who participated. Thank you for the good thing you did for the kids.

Now, let's stop it with the conspiracy theories, baseless accusations, and blame, and, if you guys still want to do something constructive with your movement, then do something constructive with it instead of wallowing in something that capped off a "very good thing to do." You guys should be proud of yourselves.

What he said.  I've never quoted one of you guys before!  :o

Can we focus on the positive?

Regardless of what happened, we raised $80,000. That's no small feat.

The only answer to this is to start a new charity and raise even more money.

I like how we are being told we should be proud about doing this but then told not to talk about it or tell anyone.

Well, I'm assuming the 80K is still going to Child's Play, as it should.  I was suggesting we move to another charity for subsequent donations.  I think it's still the best way of doing good with our feelings of disappointment.

Of course, we should also continue to give constructive feedback to Bioware about the reasons why we find the ending to be inadequate.  At least with the charity, though, we are drawing something good out of something bad.

I posted this on Reddit, so I'll repost here:

"Child's Play has more than enough donators, apparently, to the point where they can ask us to stop raising money from outside pressure? Why not simply release a statement that they are not affiliated with ANY of the multitude of groups that donate?

We should put it towards Nathan Fillion's charity, Kids Need to Read http://www.kidsneedtoread.org/. I know the director, and she is super passionate and awesome about what she does for kids who are in schools that can't afford new books. I'm local to Phoenix, and they're going to be at Phoenix Comicon in May. I'd be happy to help deliver the check with a bunch of the local Mass Effect supporters and get positive press for the campaign"

Thanks for the reply and I appreciate the support.  In a way, I almost feel for Bioware right now... almost. This must be similar to what's going on for them right now, re: endings.

Hold the line.

Thanks, Stanley.

And to everybody else. He's right. Please don't let this damage the positive momentum we've had for so much of this whole thing.

Woo is the man, with the plan.

Folks,

Let's try to get word about this to the media - CNN, Fox News, BBC, whomever will listen. What was done to this charity is unacceptable.

Who really knows what happened? It's just speculation so far.

So, we should calm down. No facts, no media.

I think he means jumping to a new one would only prove we are using Charity in order to promote are political gains, for now it be best to let it go.

Aw, thank you Stanley <3

Also, are we gonna start supporting a new charity guys? ... Or is this done?
On one hand I don't want to stir up drama or trouble for any charity we might decide to support, but on the other it's really awesome to see how much we can do when we stand together on something

First of all, thank you for the support.

Secondly, sorry, but a only very small minority are the ones that believe that EA/Bioware had something to do with it.

We know that you guys didn't do anything wrong.  But it is a very troubling outcome and as stated above, is a poweder keg waiting to go off.

I still find it ridiculous that people against the Retake Movement would send hate-mail to pressure a charitable organization.

Gunna post again.. If you guys are planning on picking another charity, I'd appreciate it if you spread awareness for Cystic Fibrosis.

www.cff.org

I myself have Cystic Fibrosis (had a double lung transplant nearly 4 yrs ago) and lost friends I've met during my hospital in the past five years affected with it and even my older brother a year and a half ago.

If you don't pick it or anything to donate.. I'll be grateful if you guys tried to raise awareness for it.

To be fair, everyone who donates to charity because their mother's
brother's mother had the same disease etc. is also doing it for their
own reasons: and many do this.

However, I agree on maybe picking a charity that is removed.

But damn, they robbed me blind, dude.... Robbed by some sweet kids playing N64, what the ****.

I'm very ashamed of the people who put pressure on Child's Play. It was simply uncalled for. That said, I don't hold anything against Child's Play and I would like to thank them for providing a constructive and positive medium for us. Sincerely, thank you guys. I know you'll do some good with those funds.

To my fellow line holders. We'll not give up. This was a victory, albeit one that was cut short. Let's continue to remain the better people in this movement and remain civilized. It only hurts us to stoop lower. Hold the Line!

As a mother who has a young son who has been hospitalized at least a week at a time every year for the last several years, I know from experience that kids really do appreciate access to video games when they're inpatients...imagine being six or seven, and being stuck in a hospital bed all day, having tests run, not really knowing what's going on. They can't really play much, and sometimes they can't even leave their bed. TV only entertains so far, but having games to play can really help a child's outlook at a possibly terrible time.

So if you've donated to Child's Play, you did a good thing, regardless of what happened to the Retake chipin page.

It's unfortunate that the charity was ended, but you guys did a really great job. $80,000 isn't something to sneeze at, and I'm pretty sure that the kids will enjoy the entertainment that the money is used for. Also, don't let this discourage you from donating in the future. Child's Play is a great charity (heck, I've even benefited from them before) and I would hope you guys continue to support it.

P.S. In the end, if some journalist or "journalist" gets a hold of this article and reports why the charity drive was ended, it will definitely work in our favor. >:P

I think we should just can the speculation and vitriol. The charity drive was a resounding success in that it helped better the lives of some children whose lives are currently not in the best place. Let's be happy with that, and not tarnish the good that's been done with rage and accusations.
