I personally was very impressed by the charity drive and proud of all the community members who participated. Thank you for the good thing you did for the kids.

Now, let's stop it with the conspiracy theories, baseless accusations, and blame, and, if you guys still want to do something constructive with your movement, then do something constructive with it instead of wallowing in something that capped off a "very good thing to do." You guys should be proud of yourselves.

QFT.

And I hope people don't start dissecting this post.  Take it for what it is--we have been doing a good thing, and it's been noticed.  We SHOULD be proud of ourselves.  Let's not throw that well-earned pride under the bus by falling into back-biting and mud-slinging.

Very well said!
Indeed, we should rejoyce that we were able to bring a little happiness to kids around the world. A happiness that connects to each and one of them, because it comes from videogames, and do we love to play videogames!

Thanks, Stan.  I am very proud.  That said, I don't think that the unfortunate situation of no longer being able to give to one charity should stop us from giving to another.  There is always good to be done somewhere in the world.  There will always be someone who could use help.  Of course we best help Bioware by giving constructive feedback - let's keep doing that - but I also think that we should keep giving to charity as part of the movement.  Ultimately, no matter how much Mass Effect matters to us - and it clearly matters a lot - donations to charity can make far more of a difference to people in need than this series has ever made to us.

The drive was, as always, a little two-faced.

On one hand, it was a "let's do something nice with all these angry people" and in that sense, we succeeded beyond our wildest dreams. We donated $80,000 to Child's Play. Don't let ANYBODY tell you that was a bad thing. There are going to be a pile of happier children because of what we did. Believe me, it helps - I spent some time in a hospital when I was nine, and playing on the N64 that somebody donated was wonderful.

On the other hand, we also did it for our own reasons: To raise awareness of our grievances, to let people know we were more than just a rioting crowd of angry fans, and to disprove the "we're entitled gamers" myth.

While Child's Play was thematically appropriate, it shouldn't be a surprise that this happened. In retrospect, it would have been better to choose another charity that was a little more distant from what we're arguing about. Perhaps the Red Cross, or something, I don't know. Regardless, what's done is done.

Most importantly of all, I ask that everyone who donated PLEASE just let things lie. The cause is good, and the reason that it was shut down is understandable. Do not prove everyone that mocked our efforts right by asking for a return on your donation.

I was with you right up until the last paragraph, on which point I respectfully disagree.

I would never urge anyone to do anything other than make their own determination on they will proceed.

God, what kind of low life sends hate mail to a charity? I am far more offended by this then I have ever been about anything even related to video games. I hope whoever decided to attack a charity knows many sleepless nights filled with guilt and regret. It's a children's charity for Christ's sake.

Gunna post again.. If you guys are planning on picking another charity, I'd appreciate it if you spread awareness for Cystic Fibrosis.

www.cff.org

I myself have Cystic Fibrosis (had a double lung transplant nearly 4 yrs ago) and lost friends I've met during my hospital in the past five years affected with it and even my older brother a year and a half ago.

If you don't pick it or anything to donate.. I'll be grateful if you guys tried to raise awareness for it.

I'll check this out and maybe post it to my facebook!

Sorry for your loss and for your pain. =(

Guys, the CP asked s to close the fund because of all the hate they were getting from people because of RME. Let's remain civil and stop blaming EA/BW for this and find another charity to donate to, I hear the Cystic Fibrosis Fund(hope i spelled that right) has been getting a lot of votes. And thank you Stanley for the kind words, we apologize for the more....passionate members in the movement.

Guys? Seriously. Time to move to the next step. Let's be civil. Paranoia doesn't serve our cause, being vocal and eloquent serves our cause.

Thanks,
But saying that the shut down of the drive being related to the handling by the gaming press(ultimately nothing to do with BioWare) is a conspiracy theory/baseless accusation simply is not accurate.  The negative perception of the movement is ENTIRELY related to the coverage by the gaming press.

I do agree that we should refocus our energy into something constructive, but simply pointing out that the action of the gaming press caused a CHARITY DRIVE to be shut down is hardly "wallowing" in the fact that it was shut down.

So, next step.  What Charity are we moving towards next?

Thanks for the response Stanley.

I think some people have gotten so caught up that they forgot most of us are here because we love the work that Bioware has done and want to ensure that our feedback is heard, and we keep the lines of communication open.

Hold the line!

Thanks Mr. Woo for your understanding. I know that we are all being quite emotional about this outcome and, in light of that, I am even more glad that you let us continue this thread through all it's phases.

(and since I am still quite upset I will take a breather for a few minutes)

I posted this on Reddit, so I'll repost here:

"Child's Play has more than enough donators, apparently, to the point where they can ask us to stop raising money from outside pressure? Why not simply release a statement that they are not affiliated with ANY of the multitude of groups that donate?

We should put it towards Nathan Fillion's charity, Kids Need to Read http://www.kidsneedtoread.org/. I know the director, and she is super passionate and awesome about what she does for kids who are in schools that can't afford new books. I'm local to Phoenix, and they're going to be at Phoenix Comicon in May. I'd be happy to help deliver the check with a bunch of the local Mass Effect supporters and get positive press for the campaign"

This.  Many great groups out there that would not take donations and then kick the donors to the curb.

Yes can we please stop muddling this with baseless accusations and insane conspiracy theories? That's far out of line. Thank you.

Likewise, rofl. I can't believe how many gaming sites joined my blacklist over this last month.

A moment ago, I sent a message to Fox News about this situation in hopes that they might help out in some way.  If you want to do the same, HERE is their contact information page.

We need a new donation. We can't let them just shut down our movement like this. Cystic Fibrosis is a good suggestion. We need to work rapidly to get this done before they shut this topic down too. Mark my words it's coming.

Folks,

Let's try to get word about this to the media - CNN, Fox News, BBC, whomever will listen. What was done to this charity is unacceptable.

I agree with this completely.

What kind of people send hate mail to a child's charity? They call us immature?
Riiiiiight

Still holding the line for as long as it takes.

Firstly, for the love of God, please do not demand your donation back. No matter who's fault this is, it certainly isn't the kids' who benefit from this wonderful drive.

Secondly, just switching to a new charity is a bad idea. Yes. I read what I just typed, and it sounds pretty awful. But it's true at this time.

Jumping ship to a new charity leaves us open to the media's inevitable stance: "Well...I guess they didn't really care about Child's Play after all. It's all about the attention. They don't care WHO they give their money to, as long as it's positive attention." It will look very, very bad. And I know how sad that is. Giving money to charity is a wonderful thing, and I encourage all of you to continue to do so within your means, but as an organized group, I think Retake Mass Effect needs to look to another avenue. For now.
