I agree with everyone here - specially txmn (love ya!) urging folks to take a breath before doing anything. Knee-jerk is never good.

I also am proud to have donated to the kids and proud of everyone else who did so! That was very kind and generous and a REALLY positive way for us to vent our frustration over the game.

Let's do it again, let's turn this negative into a positive. :)

That's what "my" inner Shepard wants me to do.

Hold the line!

what i think is funny is that they decide to cut off the retake chaity drive, because they didnt like the backlash.  ok fine, they can do that.

but do they not realise all the game sites will now write an article pontificating if that was the right thing to do and so forth.  which will keep it in the media, which will keep the hate mail they want to avoid going, plus the disgruntled retake letters that will get written.

Reminds me about celebrities demanding things get taken down and then the resulting news stories give it more exposure than the original incident.

I love how this is going to turn things right back around on the Gaming Press. Their self-entitled, arrogant bull**** led to a charity drive being shut down.

$50 says not one of them covers this story.  Unless of course you request a refund...  Don't request a refund.

We all know someone's PR department was putting pressure on Child's play to not accept donations. This charity painted us in a good light, there's no way certain individuals or groups wanted this positive press to continue for our side.

Folks,

Let's try to get word about this to the media - CNN, Fox News, BBC, whomever will listen. What was done to this charity is unacceptable.

I agree with this completely.

What kind of people send hate mail to a child's charity? They call us immature?
Riiiiiight

Still holding the line for as long as it takes.

Is this confirmed, or is this just a theory? Who says it was hatemail?

The only people that know what happened are people who have communicated with Child's Play directly on the subject.  Please DO NOT spread gossip to major new sources.

Yeah. I was pretty sure, that this was not confirmed. People should concentrate on FACTS, not on Gossip or Assumptions.

I've been trying to find the page but the thread's too big, but shortly after the discussion started someone had contacted CP directly and the email reply they received spoke of hate mail. (S)he informed us about it and contacted the Forbes dude so that at least *someone* out there would be aware of what was going on before weird news starts spreading again. I can try to keep looking for the post, if you wish, though.

Thank you! I used it, wouldn't mind some others but hey, I'm not complaining, I'm just Holding The Line!

EDIT: Booo, to small sig area, it gets rid of my "His name was Marauder Shields, he died protecting us from the ending" Oh well though, one goes away so others may live on.

Which others would you like? I've done about...half?aA little over half? ...of the main characters, and I can easily swap out the text for this text. Or make you one if I don't have that character yet, it'll just take a bit longer.

Hi there folks, I'd just like to clarify why the charity is distancing itself from the retake movement. Charities have to walk a fine line, especially while maintaining secure financial support for their operations. It is entirely possible that the charity is simply attempting to avoid being dragged into the arguments over the ending, and the broad brush being used by some in the amateur journalist field a-la penny arcade that is ostracizing this movement and all associates. It is not that they do not value the contributions, but negative press will cause more damage than the 80k donation can repair for them. I both understand and support their decision to request a distancing between the movement and the charity, as it can be confusing in some cases to separate support for the charity from support for the retake's other goals. This is best shown in signatures that say "retake mass effect" "help the kids" in one banner. This may not be intended to have such a direct correlation, but can be easily misinterpreted by an outsider.

TL;DR don't blame the charity, it simply wants to avoid this polarizing issue. You can and should still donate as a private citizen under your own name, simply avoid doing so under the retake mass effect movement as it has potential to undermine the charity's efforts to gather funds from other sources.

I'm sorry, but this doesn't make sense.  By asking us to cease the drive, they are unequiovacably stating that they are embarrassed by the source of the funds.  To do that and compound it by keeping the money is something I can't even wrap my brain around.

The charity has a stated mission, it is clear what they support.  They are not seen to "support" any of their donor corporations, are they?  How is this diffferent?  It isn't.

The press coverage, when viewed objectively (and for fun, I just had a non-gamer associate who heads a non-profit of similar size and scope to CP review the coverage and comment) is not negative.  In fact, it raises awareness of a group tremendously.  His response to the CP shut down of the charity drive was "What?"  (and of course, since he is in the non-profit world, a semi-serious offer to be the new charity of ReTake)

I am not sayin leverage was brought to bear by other sponsors.  I am saying that this was a uncoventional response to a legitimate funding source and windfall to a worthy cause.

No, they're indicating that the attention from the topic surrounding the drive could eventually have a negative impact on their overall funding.  It has absolutely nothing to do with their personal stake in the matter (if such a thing exists).  They're a group founded by and for the most part funded by gamers.  Some gamers obviously have a major problem with their ( inaccurately portrayed) connection with the Retake movement.  This will, in turn, negatively effect their funding in the next fiscal year.  They have every right to politely request that we wrap things up.

Sorry, but you just said the same thing I did in my first paragraph, but with "pretty" and "soft" words rather than simple plain language.

And I agree, they have every right to request that the drive be ended, but I should be accompanied by a public statement and offer to return funds already earned in support of a cause "that could have a negative effect on their overall funding".

Again, politely agree to disagree on the returning of funds bit. That, to me, would seem overly hostile.  I'm ok with them returning donations if requested.

Sure, we'll just sit here, quiet and polite, while our opponents destroy charities and dominating every major mass media out there untill nothing will be left of our proud little movement. <_<

Or we can be constructive and continue to find ways to announce our displeasure that doesn't involve roping the media into it and possibly confusing everyone even more. As other posters have said, we should probably wait twenty-four hours before doing anything anyway, give ourselves a chance to calm down. This is frustrating, and it's a good idea for all of us to take a breath.

Thats all we do. Taking a breath, stepping back, calming down and then taking another humiliating slap in the face.

And that, my friends, is the nugget that sends me to bed with a ray of hope in an otherwise dreary evening - "politely agree to disagree".

I have great respect for all the opinions I've read here tonight, and great affection for the caring folks who've posted.

It is a rare and wonderful thing to be able to discuss, disagree and still discuss some more.

I salute you all, and thank you for the conversation.

Greetings everyone,

I wanted to convey to each and every one of you that I have nothing but respect and admiration for the charity drive you put together. Raising $80,000 is fantastic and regardless of how it ended, is an amazing accomplishment. You should all be proud. I know I am.

Thank you.
