I have a suggestion. It won't affect the movement, it won't show how organised or passionate we are, there will be no statistics to show how many of the Retake movement are doing it - it will simply be a good thing.
If you want to give to charity, then just give to charity. Forget the Retake cause, just go out, find a charity that appeals to you and donate.
Do I agree with what happened? No. It's always a few people who misunderstand and ruin it for everyone else. Can't blame them though. If we weren't clear enough, we weren't clear enough. But with the Child's Play movement shut down, instead of seeking out another charity to "prove" how generous we are in channeling our frustrations into something positive, just do something positive. Don't look for credit or validation, just give a homeless man a couple of bucks so he can get a cup of coffee, give something to cancer research. Whatever. If you're feeling generous and want to do something good, just do it.
The thing about that charity drive is that plenty of Retakers probably didn't donate. By the same token, plenty of people who hate the Retake movement and love the endings probably did. Why? It's a good cause.
The Retake Charity Drive has made it's point. We're frustrated, yes but we're aware that in the end it's just a game and there are more important things in life to worry about. If some in the media didn't understand that, well too bad for them. Now we move on. Give to charity privately if you want to continue giving. The Retake movement has to evolve.
The idea of civility and friendship and constructive debate must continue. When this started, we knew that giving to charity wasn't a way to buy a new ending. We knew that in all probability, it would make little difference. But we did it anyway and most of us have tried to have a conversation that was passionate but respectful. There have been trolls on all sides, there always are, but for the most part, it's been constructive. It needs to remain so.
Art contests and writing contests aren't going to change things, but it does allow people to come together creatively. When this is over, whatever the outcome, our Facebook friends lists and twitter followers will have grown exponentially. New friends from around the world. If there's one thing we can thank the ending for, it's that.
