I gave what little money I could spare in support of the retake cause, and also in support of giving kids games. The charity was a way to focus the super negative energy of the endings in a slightly less negative fashion, and help kids out at the same time. The smile on a kids face as they get a new game should really be the reward for giving, showing Bioware that we're not self-entitled whiners is the bonus.

I'd never ask for money back from any charity, anyone who does so has no idea why they gave to charity in the first place.

http://penny-arcade....ake-mass-effect Well Penny Arcade has close ties with the Charity. Tycho wouldn't BS about this. Childs Plays was actually getting flooded with mail asking what the goal was and how much till the new endings would be made. Quite a few people had no idea what they were doing when they gave money. Thats pretty dumb

Just heresay from someone with vested interest in the outcome. That is far from "proof".

I'd like to see the statement from Paypal please and thanks! Image IPB

Well then you're a fool. cover your ears and keep your head in the sand for all I care. But please by all means keep giving your money away.

So.

If I can break this down correctly.

A bunch of people wish, at the very least, additional material in the ME3 Ending and while we're at it we give charity to kids.

A bunch of people who want the endings to stay the same have 'members' who send hate mail and spread disinformation to a charity for kids.

Right.
At this point the Retake Mass Effect could suddenly start advocating Stephanie Meyer for God-President of Literature and I'd still support them.

As if the ending itself didn't leave a bad enough taste in my mouth.

Oh please anyone besides Stephanie Meyer!

But yeah, that's pretty much it. Great world huh?

I agree with this up to a point. (Again, I did not ask for my money back - but)

Once Child's Play decided they did not want to take our money anymore - because of political reasons - I can totally understand someone wanting to take the money they donated - and give it to another charity - or keep it or whatever. At that point, they were disagreeing with Child's Play's charity "mission statement" - which changed in the middle of the drive.

I don't fault anyone for not liking that. Again, it didn't change my desire to donate money to the kids - I donated a LOT - but I can see the logic in someone not liking Child's Play changing their stance in the middle of the drive.

I just think you should give folks the benefit of the doubt before accusing them of yanking their money out "because the endings are not changed yet".

If you just think it is rude to ask for the money back regardless of the reason - well - that's fine with me. I am just attempting to correct a misconception - there has been a lot of that going on the past few days. Image IPB

@snajones

It's good to see all sides of a question. Thanks for clearing that up for people who are really confused as to why anyone might wish to request their funds back.

You seem like a reasonable guy. I actually kinda like you. Are so blinded by the whole massive need for a new ending to a video game that you cant see the sickening thing that was done in order ot try to get it?

Hey txmn - have you been around all day? I was out the last 8-9 hours or so. Do you know where Rosery left off in her brainstorming new ideas? We should copy the list up here so it is visible and we can keep building on it?

I may have been a bit too general there, I'm sorry.

And I won't disagree with people who disagree that a charity "shifts the goalposts", but I did mean it's plain rude to ask for money back when it was meant to be given freely, out of the charity of their heart. The money is given, it's still for a cause.

I will admit that it was disappointing to see that CP decided they couldn't continue receiving donations, but in their situation I can appreciate that it is a difficult place to be. I feel it was more down to the negative media coverage received by the retake movement right from the start, when every gaming media outlet and their pooch was saying that the donation was a front for more sinister intentions. That coloured it irreversibly I guess.

But $80,000 raised for kids is no mean feat, especially in this day of tight belts. Like many have been saying, it's something to be proud of.

Just checked out the Full Paragon site, very impressed and proud of the people that got that started. While I definitely agreed about Retake not associating itself with another charity event, I'm glad to see there are still people wanting to do some good. I definitely plan on chipping in for them as well, and it's good to see they're not associating the charity with the campaign for a new ending, shouldn't be any fallout to stop them.

Agreed totally.
I think the issue was the "moving goalposts" - great analogy.
I also respect the difficult position they were in... however... my one caveat is...
this cause was for a video game ending... hah. It wasn't a "large" political issue! It wasn't stem cell research or the world economy or something *important*. It was just something that loyal fans on BOTH sides are very passionate about.

I just feel sad that
A) people felt the need to flame a charity so bad they actually had to change their policies on how to accept donations - over something - trivial when you think about it! (compared to REAL issues - like sick children!)
B) news outlets mis-reported the whole thing - and still are! (whatever happened to responsible journalism?)
C) We couldn't raise more money for the kids!

Regardless, I will continue to

I for one knew damn well where my money was going to and for why, so I had no intentions of taking my money back from a great cause. I think it was a tiny minority that felt outraged, but I missed the majority of the fallout that happened shortly after the fundraiser was closed.

Pay pal said it was a high amount of complaints. thats why they investigated. They thought they were buying new endings

If that's true then those people suffered from a brief moment of missing the obvious.  The page clearly stated where the money was going.  It's not the creator of the page's fault that the people didn't read.

+1. If there's one thing I hate more than the skittles explosions, it's misogyny (ok, there's other stuff I hate more than skittles explosions too, but it'd take too long to list them all <_<)

Lol.  So much this.  It was stated explicitly in multiple places.  UN was so good about that.  People who misunderstood where their money was going obviously didn't read a word on the donations page.

I've yet to see a source showing that is true. All I have heard is wild speculation about that.

Yeah, her working list is some where.  I think 5 or 6 pages back.  My hubby is taking me on a day trip for my bday tomorrow but I and others are going to spend some serious time on Sunday trying to tack down a serious plan from the suggested ideas.

To everybody--keep the ideas coming!
