They think we're petulent and disgusting for using charity to get what we want.

To be fair, letting all these news sites know seems a bit attention-grabby to me. I'm happy just knowing I contributed.

It's for exposure. We want more people to donate.

That is a good thing.

Exactly we need more eyes on this.  The more the better, there is no good or bad attention there is just attention and we need all of it.

I'll share a story.

I'm a type 1 diabetic, and have been for quite a few years now. I was diagnosed when I was 9, in third grade. I had been slowly wasting away, as is normal for the disease before diagnosis, and was pretty much a skeleton when I was admitted to the hospital for treatment.

The hospital itself was a pretty drab place - I was technically in the children's ward, but all that really meant was the presence of specialists for dealing with illnesses common to children and a bunch of cartoon animals painted on the wall. Oh, and one last thing - the presence of a sort of "rec room" for the patients well enough to move around.

I was pretty out of it for the first couple of days, but on my third day there I was able to get around well enough, IV drip in tow. I asked to go to the rec room - I'd never been there, and I'd heard that someone had donated a nintendo-64 console and some games for the kids to play on. I met a boy there with some kind of lung problem - cystic fibrosis, I believe - who was permanently attached to an oxygen tank. He was a very warm kid, and we quickly bonded over our shared enjoyment of the little piece of our normal life that some kind soul had donated to the hospital.

It was a touchstone, of a kind, giving us something of a normal life outside this world of whirring machines, doctors in lab coats, nurses in scrubs, and lots and lots of needles to hold on to. We played for several hours before I had to go back, but I will always be grateful for what that one small donation gave me:

Hope.

Hope that I'd really be okay. That this wasn't the end of the world. That I was going to get out, and have a life again. That I could be like all the other kids, playing games with a friend - even if the friend couldn't breathe too well, and even if we were both hooked up to sterile plastic bags towed around on wheeled carts.

Never, ever, ever underestimate what the smallest thing can do for a scared and lonely child.

One of my best friend had a cancer 9 years ago, i was visiting him nearly every day at the hospital since i was a student in the same city.
He could borrow video games, it helped him a lot to have some "good" moment during the day and forget he had no hair and wanted to throw up so often.

This is a good cause, doesn't matter that Bioware care about it a not, it's just about humans wanting to make things better in a way they can.

This donation drive is making me so, so happy. I have no words for how amazing it feels to see this happen. How could I *not* donate?

I've messaged the other members of the "Fantastic Four" (yes, Rosery99, DrowVampyre, UniqueName001, I have taken to calling us the Fantastic Four) and we'll get some more updates rolling in the OP when Unique wakes up! Cheers all, I really am off to bed this time!

For serious ;)

Heh. I appreciate the sentiment (and it is indeed a fun name :) ) but I'd personally prefer not to go to far with the titles, I'm just a random MAWG who was in the right place at the right time.

This has gone completely nute and it's due to everyone here :)

Not entirely accurate, but I understand how it could be seen that way.

Renegade option??

Personally I think its about time the fans strongarmed back at EA instead of just rolling over and taking it.

Well that's not ENTIRELY true =P....but yeah. I don't think it'd hurt right now.  Hopefully it's not a cynical newsreporter though.

OK, so I am not actually in charge here, but I would like to put in my two cents regarding asking for media exposure.

My personal feeling is that if an outlet is significantly focused on video games, or has already done a story about Mass Effect (like Forbes), I am all for alerting them to this drive. On the other hand, while additional donations never hurt, I don't believe it will be helpful to have regular, non-video-game news outlets link here. The video game community, or at least those who have played ME3, have the background to understand what we are asking and why. A random person from a CNN style news site would not have any basis for understanding what is going on.

Not trying to be rude, and I really do appreciate everyone's efforts to get the word out Just my personal feelings on the matter.

Honestly I'm sure a portion of that is for endings...But I think at this point I think a large part of it is catharsis for the empty feeling left behind.  And hell...for the kids =).  And doing something good for once.  It's a crap world sometimes.  Lets make it better =)

Well before anyone judges us, they should ask themselves when the last time they donated to charity was.

Ah that was kinda what I was trying to say...just much more well thought out and written >_>.  It'd be good if people educated in the subject matter covered the story though.

I donated more than I spent on Mass Effect 3, and was happy to do it. I hope these kids will be encouraged and uplifted by the help that ChildsPlay offers them. Optimism and hope are realistic!
I much prefer to focus my energy and thoughts in positive ways, and this is a wonderful alternative to stomping around the internet and grumbling. (Though I've done a fair bit of that, lol.)

And not to contradict you, because I haven't really made the outside effort myself for non-gaming websites but if we could reach them they are at least a little less likely to hold the "Game are serious art business and these people are just bullying the artists.  Plus lots of gamers don't visit gaming websites or forums so in my mind all exposure is good exposure.  But that is just my two cents.

I'm going to be honest...this is way beyond just wanting to get the ending's changed.  Any news media should cover this.  This isn't just a victory for the BSN, but this is a victory for the gaming community in general.

Headlines "Disgruntled group of Gamers rally to raise over $26,000 for charity!"

I don't give a damn about retaking Mass Effect 3's ending right now (well, I do to a degree).  I'm proud of what we've accomplished as a group, and hell, I want the world to know what an accomplishment this is.  We're not an organized group.  We're not an orginization.  We're a bunch of people on a forum, with the only thing in common was that we hated the ending to a video game.

So, I would like to kindly disagree.  Any news shoudl know abotu this.  The video game news will report it right (hopefully, but we've seen the opinon pieces at IGN and Kotaku are like, and I don't think CNN could get it any worse).

This was a victory for all of us.
