I know there's a lot of criticism regarding the endings... I'm guilty of it myself. Yet of the few things that bother me about the endings as written there is one thing that I just really legitimately feel like I need to ask...

Why was Joker and the Normandy travelling through a Mass Relay?

I mean... they were fighting above Earth and from a player perspective there was no reason for them whatsoever to attempt to leave the system. There was no explanation given, no fall back rally point, or anything of the sort.

Despite the many reasons people may feel unfulfilled with the ending, this one detail more than any other is commonly listed as a reason that people are perplexed. It feels like the only reason the Normandy enters a Mass Relay is so that the part where they crash land on a verdant world could be added in.

So... can anyone from BioWare point out a reason for this?

PS I'm not trying to "call you out" or any such thing. I just know that this OP is going to be followed by God knows how many "answers" from people that believe they know why but may not. If this was answered in another thread please somebody link it for me. Otherwise, I'm really just interested in a BioWare response to help me understand.

The best is the thread in which someone claims it isn't a plot hole, and that Joker merely retreated with no explanation as to how we're supposed to know that. That's what I'm talking about in the OP... people seem to 'know' how it makes sense, but nobody can provide an in-game explanation.
