I played through and beat Mass Effect about 2 years ago, reaching level 50 in the process. My XBOX was stolen last year, taking my game saves with it, and so I have been replaying ME 1 and 2 to get my Shepard back for the third game. I know I have the Medal of Honor acheivement that unlocks the Hardcore difficulty and levels 51-60, as I have been playing on hardcore this time around. However, my newly created Shepard has reached level 50 about 2/3 the way through a game, and that is apparently the level cap as I no longer gain XP. Did I need to use New Game Plus to actually advance past level 50, or should my brand new character be able to get past that point? Keep in mind that I don't have any of my original saves from when I beat the game the first time around; any sort of unlocks are the ones I get strictly from the game's acheivements.

i thought it was ONLY the new characters that got to level up past 50. IIRC, the first time i did this, my very first character wouldn't level up when i started over with him, but a completely new one got to level 55 in the first play-through.

If you unlocked Medal of Honor in a previous game, you should be able to advance to level 60 in any game after that. Just remember, once you get up to around level 45, XP is gained progressively slower until it's running like frozen molasses 
If it's a new career and you are trying to hit 60, it's pretty much impossible unless you spend loads of time spamming XP glitches.

Oh, it's not an issue with the flow of XP slowing down. I've hit the point where I simply don't gain anymore XP...it doesn't even show how much I have now because I have hit the level 50 cap. Looking around, it seems like it may have something to do with Pinnacle Station. I have that DLC and have already run through it, and apparently some people have issues with leveling past 50 for brand new careers if they have it installed. Don't know if there is anything I can do at this point to fix my problem, though. This sucks because I was assuming I could make it to at least a few levels past 50, and so my Shepard doesn't quite have the build I was hoping for.

Never heard of the Pinnacle Station glitch. Harder to get past on an Xbox, but you can mod your Xbox save once it gets imported to ME2 using Gibbed so you can get back whatever you missed... but even a level 50 import to ME2 gives you a fair amount of bonuses. Hopefully you are still at least getting Paragon/Renegade points?
Maybe uninstalling Pinnacle Station and clearing your cache may help?
