I think people just hate her because she hugs you even if you're rude to her, and she can't be killed. That's all.

Unless you romanced the Virmire Survivor, you will get her in the flashback at the very end. Its...kind of a slap in the face. Romance Tali? Nope, your Shep is remembering Liara in his last moments. What about Garrus? Nope - your straight, though xenophilic, FemShep is recalling Liara.

I was indifferent towards her in the first two games. I really liked her in the third though.
this and a bit of what MACharlie1 said. I never hated her but I felt that in game 1 and 3 she was push a bit on the player. Luckily in 3 she seems ... more grown up? Weird to say for someone over 100 but I guess with everything that happened she became more mature/hardened and I like her character a lot in 3. Instead of feeling like they're pushing the Liara romance it feels like she's that friend you've had forever and you're just really comfortable with. It's nice

I think a lot of that had to do with Liara being there for Shepard and actually is the one that saved Shepard from the SB and Collectors. And Liara can die in the end if your score is low enough that the squad gets killed. And without Liara, Shepard would never had done what Shepard did. No Liara, no stopping Seran. No Liara, no finding about the weapon to use on the Reapers. Just saying.

Unfortunately, your argyment falls apart when you consider that a romanced VS gets the scene instead. The VS abandoned Shepard at Horizon. With your logic, Liara should be in that place no matter what. It was obviously a place reserved for the LI and Bioware coped out of making one for Tali, Garrus, Miranda and Jack. It doesn't help that a lot of the time, Sheps are shoehorned into being best buds with her. This goes back to ME2 when some of my Sheps were total dicks to her hugged her on Illium...ladyvader wrote...

Is it trolling a troll if the topic turns into a friendly but serious conversation about Liara?

By that logic, if it weren't for Tali, you would have not gotten any proof that Saren was rogue, thus you would have not become a spectre, thus Sovereign would have succeeded in the first game.ladyvader wrote...

You can be an ass to everyone in the game and they still consider you a friend. Maybe Shepard really didn't care that much for the other LI. Possible. I can't take Miranda's romance serious at all because she wanted to shag in the engineer level of the Normandy where they could be seen by the rest of the crew. That was nothing but a quicky.MACharlie1 wrote...

That is also true, but there could have been another way to get that information. I doubt too many others have the knowledge Liara does about the Protheans.Zalekanzer wrote...

Too bad that it's just one players perspective. What your suggesting is that the love interest choice was merely an illusion and that Shep really loved Liara and not Garrus, Tali, Jack or Miranda...which is utter bullocks. Liara should not be in their place. If they really didn't want to make an extra one for "non-ME1 love interests" make it a panning shot of the team or something.ladyvader wrote...

Nobody is saying Liara isn't important to the plot or anything. She just shouldn't be taking other love interests spots in flashbacks to a love interest....because she simply wasn't it. I have 18 Sheps...over half of them aren't remembering their love interest properly.

In ME2 I didn't like the fact that I *had* to hug her when reuniting with her. I was not friends with her. We kept a professional relationship ( granted, that also applies to other characters like Garrus). And she gave Shep's body to Cerberus, and I can't call her out on this? Really? She has that creepy obsessive stalker behavior towards Shep that completely ticks me off and I have no real way to tell her that I think what she did was wrong.
However, I kinda liked her in ME3. That last scene on London was absolutely lovely.
But then... she showed up instead of my LI Garrus in the final flashback. Man was I pissed. I was just starting to like her...

I don't like her voice, either, which (while not really her fault) increases her annoyance factor.
Then there's the fact she's over a hundred and far too naive and just being nice to her starts a romance so you have to actually turn her down while I seem to remember that with Kaidan or Ashley (and definitely the ME2 love interests) you have to deliberately start something.
And I don't like how she becomes the center of everything in ME3. I don't feel her becoming the Shadow Broker is a logical or sane progression for her character and it gives her a Mary Sue vibe. Her "I'm dead inside" thing the second two games (no matter how justified it is) also grated.
Also, why does she keep barging into my room in the middle of the night wanting to talk?
So I wouldn't say I hated her but she annoyed the hell out of me.

Also, she was pretty terrible to Javick. I know that he wasn't nice either but I cut him some slack since he just woke up 50,000 years later to find out that the Reapers are invading again so his species warning didn't appear to pay off and he's the only prothean in existence since everyone else died off. Talk about culture shock and Liara incessently pestering him for information from the minute he woke up and then clearly judging him because he wasn't what she wanted protheans to be...I seriously wished I could have taken her aside and told her to lay off the poor guy.
