Why do people like Kaiden/Ashley?

Ashley was always the typical "I'm feisty!" female character, and Kaiden was just Elvis with a little less weight.
However, come ME2, they both turned into whiny, boring people. In ME3, I suppose they were okay, but they were still incredibly whiny. And this is without the romance.

Ashley is just an insubordinate ***** half the time that believes she's deeper then she is.

So what you're saying is that you don't like Kaidan and don't see why anyone else likes Kaidan because physically he vaguely resembles Elvis?
I'm not saying I don't like him, I just think he (and Ashley) are just annoying and boring. I never used either of them on my squad in ME1 or ME2 when possible, because they just really didn't connect with me like Garrus, Tali, Wrex, and Liara did. And not just because they're aliens, but because they had interesting personalities and backgrounds.
But really, the whining about Cerberus in ME2 and ME3 is what really alienates them for me.

For me it's them not trusting Shepard. I'm unsure what I want to do with the Shepards I have with them. I'm not happy with either one and I've not done a run with Ash yet. Might be the next one I do. Unsure.Terminus Echoes wrote...

Liara didn't join you in ME2 either, but didn't call you a traitor or act like as ass towards you. I'm sorry, getting a hug from them as the LI and that crapolo message isn't enough for some of my Shepards to want to continue with them. One move on to Jack and the other to Jacob. And now Jacob isn't a LI so that Shep is stuck until I figure out what to do with her.
@landline I don't like Kaidan much because he reminds me of Carth and I didn't like Carth after he ran like a wuss from darkside Reven. Too bad the VO is the same and they almost sound the same.
The only characters I hate in the game was/is TIM and Kai Leng. Those two I can't stand at all. I don't care for Zaeed because of his actions during his LM. That rubbed me the wrong way.

If "I'm feisty" and "I'm Elvis" is all you got out of them in ME1, then I don't think anything any of us say will change your mind.
Well personally, I didn't enjoy ME1 all that much. It sort of had a dull tone to it and felt awkward. Of course, this is because it was the first game and the foundation for which all the others would be based off of. They just didn't really get the cinematography right, the combat was stale, and there wasn't much variety. I guess maybe I didn't feel as immersed.
For the record, I played ME1 before ME2 came out, so I'm not a "newbie."
But I do have an open mind, so don't think of me as a close-minded, ignorant person. I'm not asking in a hostile manner, just asking a legitimate question.

Ashley was very well-written in ME1, I think. You may not agree with her views - I didn't - but she was a fleshed out character with a true personality; she had love for her family, a good taste in poetry, some... pretty strong views, and she kicked ass on the battlefield. Yeah, she was a bit of a b*tch, but she had personality. I liked that.

I do agree that Ashley provided a good character for an alien-skeptic. However, it went a bit overboard, especially when she killed Wrex on my first playthrough. I had her killed in the Virmire mission because of it XD
On the second playthrough I still had her killed. She was just annoying in my opinion, but she had a good backstory, as did Kaiden. Still, you need more than a good backstory to be a good character. They just didn't really stand out. If they had been in ME2, then this would be much different, as ME2 was the more character development based game.

I could never hold that against them. First they thought you were dead for two years and then they're pissed you didn't tell them you weren't dead for two years (the natural assumption is not that you WERE dead for two years and were rebuilt). They investigated Cerberus with you in the first game and saw the sick stuff they were up to then (and the fact that all their scientists kept turning into husks). They also know Cerberus has a reputation as a terrorist organization for good reason. If you're an Akuze survivor, you know that they caused that. For me it's them not trusting Shepard.
So there you are suddenly alive right after half the colony was taken and no one warned Kaidan/Ashley. You didn't contact them and they don't know that you could have tried but no one would tell you where they were.
They don't know why you're working with Cerberus and not the Alliance and they don't know that Cerberus didn't put some mind-control chip in you like Miranda wanted. They really don't know anything about the situation at all. They don't even know for sure that Cerberus isn't behind the attacks.
I think it's too much asking for trust right then and it's huge that they quickly send an email to apologize for what they said.
You mean when he was about to kill you? I think that's forgivable. Of course, it never would have happened if you did his quest-line and persuaded him to stand down.I do agree that Ashley provided a good character for an alien-skeptic. I agree with you about Ashley. I didn't like her, but I still thought she was well developed and some people like that kind of person. As for Kaidan, I loved that the more you talk to him, the more you realize why he's so reserved. He's got to maintain that control and I enjoyed talking to him. Sbarge did such a great job with the inflections in his voice, that I really liked Kaidan right off... of course that could just be because I liked Carth so much too... or maybe it's just Sbarge's voice. I love his voice.

But anyways I think the best description that I've heard about Kaidan is 'estrogen bait'. He's that guy that who you can marry and have 2.5 kids and the white picket fence. He may not be the most exciting but he'll remember anniversaries and surprise you with flowers for no better reason than he loves you.
Don't get me wrong I like some of the other 'more exciting' romances. Garrus/Shep to me is like Bonnie and Clyde in the sense that they would go out together or not at all. Partners. It's just a different feel than Kaidan

Problem is I always had Garrus with me on Horizon and that should have made a difference. Like Cerberus would really work with a turian. Neither one was listening to reason at that point and even Garrus pointed it out to them and it didn't matter.Sarah1281 wrote...

About the VS trusting you, though... by the time you get to TIM's base and watch those videos about how Shepard was rebuilt, it's clear that the VS trusts you, perhaps even more than you trust yourself. Yes, you had to earn their trust, but I'm glad that they stood up to Shepard.

Notice how I clarified that it was my first playthrough? As in, very first time playing? And I hadn't looked at any videos beforehand, like I do with all my games. I apologize for not being perfect on my first time playing through my first game with this sort of dialogue system.
