Just realized OP spelled "Kaidan" wrong.

Yeah, sadly that happens quite frequently. Even Bioware misspells his name.

Well, I can only speak for Kaidan. He was just a grounded guy in a galaxy of chaos and insanity who had a pretty sh*tty adolescence. He had a smart, levelheaded view of things, and was kinda goofy at times (I think this might only come across if you romance him, anyway, I liked that about him). I don't blame him for being all suspicious about Cerberus and Shepard working for Cerberus. For what it's worth, he does apologize for Horizon and his doubting Shepard in ME3, and at times it even sounds like he regretted not going with Shepard.

I... have no idea why people might like Ashley. But I consider that a personal failing of mine, not of the character's. In fact, I think in some ways, her depth and believability as a character are the very same things that make me hate her. She's the person I would hate in real life, too.

Kaidan. Eh. Similar situation, I suppose, only reversed. He's the person I would like/get along with in real life. He would be my best friend if I were on that ship (in ME). As some others have said - he's kind of the ground, the centre point. He can be cautious and slow to trust, but there are reasons for it, and he eventually lets you see that if you take the time to get to know him. He doesn't wear his heart on his sleeve, necessarily, like some of the other characters. You have to pay attention to the little things - the expression on his face, the timbre and pace of his words when he speaks. It seemed fairly obvious to me in both ME2 and the early part of ME3 that he was hurt and confused as much as angry, but he hadn't had time to process all of that, so he defaulted to anger. He (much more than Ashley, I felt) has a reason to be doubtful and slow to let Shepard back in. And a lot of his later dialogue in ME3 hinted (as I think someone else mentioned) that he seems to not only genuinely feel bad about the way he treated Shep before, but regret not going with her and being there to support her.

They both just... felt like real people, not characters, which makes them interesting. And apparently very polarizing, because lots of people tend to either love them or hate them.

I don't, actually, like Kaidan or Ashley any better than, say, Jacob or Miranda. I did, however, know that having an LI other than those from ME 1 would likely cut my romantic dialogues way, way down - if not completely eradicate them, so for my ME 3 import, I chose a Shep who had romanced Kaidan and stayed loyal through number two. Specifically so I could get the most out of my first, and for right now at least, only play of the game.

Thanks to the introduction of Diana Allers, Kaidan is no longer the worst character in the series. With her robotic tone, Allers just managed to beat out Kaidan's incessant whining.

I personally never got it.

Ashley was always the typical "I'm feisty!" female character, and Kaiden was just Elvis with a little less weight.

However, come ME2, they both turned into whiny, boring people. In ME3, I suppose they were okay, but they were still incredibly whiny. And this is without the romance.

Same question, different characters:

Why do people like Garrus / Tali?

Why do people like Liara?

Why do people like Miranda?

Why do people like Thane?

I know the answer.
They simply like those characters because they got invested in them. BW did a great job creating those characters - and that also applies on Ashley and Kaidan. It's a matter of taste, you know?

God, I missed her jokes in ME3. She feels incomplete - and a lot of good lines got cut before the release (according to the leaked script).

And I thougt everyone in Mass effect universe was whiny... Your companions just complain all the time. My mother, my father, my daughter, my sister, my son - Shepard help meeee. I cant cope with it on my own.

And then I realised these two could cope with their problems. They were strong human character and they were most normal. Kaidan and Ashley character just feels more real that the others. They are someone who could really be in Navy.

And there Kaidan did not complain.Only told you about what made him the man he is now. Well I never really got to Ashley in my logical world she never survised the Virmire. For me its logical to spare someone who is more experienced in fight, somwone who is higher ranking officer and biotic.

About Horizon accident. I can understand them. There is someone who you loved and thought she was dead and suddely she is alive and kicking, working with enemy. Sorry, but that would make me angry too.

well for ashley. i like her because she feels like the most "real" character in the series to me. most of the other characters are exotic aliens, or extreme personalities. ashley feels like women ive met in real life. sure she has flaws, but flaws are probably the best thing to give a character. having characters with no real flaws (liara), makes them seem too perfect and boring.

ashley (and kaidan) are also the only ones who really stand up to shepard and question him. from the perspective of the characters, thats crazy. Shepard was DEAD for two years. came back to life and started working for a terrorist organization who you've personally seen do extreme experiments on people and assassinations of your own military.

theres also ashleys whole mistrust of aliens. she doesn't hate them like alot fo people think, she just doesnt quite trust them. which makes total sense if you pay attention to her backround. then her mild religious views, which i find nice, im not even religious myself but i find it cool when other people are, just because i dont believe in anything doesnt mean i should rain on anyone elses parade. her constant quoting of poetry (based on her childhood) comes off as she has trouble expressing herself so she uses poetry to do it for her, which i can totally relate to.

so yeah. she's just the most "real" character in the series to me.

Notice how I clarified that it was my first playthrough? As in, very first time playing? And I hadn't looked at any videos beforehand, like I do with all my games. I apologize for not being perfect on my first time playing through my first game with this sort of dialogue system.

I didn't expect you to be perfect your first time playing. I just don't think it makes sense to hate Ashley for killing Wrex when she had to kill Wrex because you failed to persuade him to stand down (which is much easier if you do his quest) and so he was going to kill you. Hating someone for saving your life is just strange to me.

And a lot of his later dialogue in ME3 hinted (as I think someone else mentioned) that he seems to not only genuinely feel bad about the way he treated Shep before, but regret not going with her and being there to support her.

Yeah, when he was like "I wish I had been there" I wanted to facepalm and tell him that so did I and that he had, in fact, been invited to be there.

And I thougt everyone in Mass effect universe was whiny... Your companions just complain all the time. My mother, my father, my daughter, my sister, my son - Shepard help meeee. I cant cope with it on my own.

Though to be fair, this is only if you ask them about their problems.

Well spoken, fellow.

People like certain characters - point. It's all a matter of taste and expectations. If I had a thing for blue-skinned beautiful women, I would go after them, Liara is a fine example. Not exactly my type, still a great character. But I'm more into human women I fear and of all options, Ashley is the one I -really- love. She's simply one of the best fictional characters for me, although BW damaged that illusion with lack of content for her in ME3 - 'specially the generic dialogues.

I just think he (and Ashley) are just annoying and boring. I never used either of them on my squad in ME1 or ME2 when possible, because they just really didn't connect with me like Garrus, Tali, Wrex, and Liara did. And not just because they're aliens, but because they had interesting personalities and backgrounds.

I agree 100%. It's kind of sad that the aliens have more personality to them than the humans in these games. They look better too, at least in my opinion. Something about the human models just looks a little...off...

There are exactly two causes that make me dislike Ash a lot, and they tie into each other.
1st - She's a racist. And one of the annoying kind. I felt like I need to punch her in the face for interrupting Liara in ME1 even she has something important to say. And I'm not even a big Liara fan.
2nd - She killed Wrex in my first playthrough (until I reloaded and spend my last points on charm, that is).
Also, you just need to talk normally to her, and she thinks you're in a relationship with her.
Nono, you hold on tight to that nuke there.

Kaidan is just Kaidan. He's not special, but he also isn't as boring as many see him. He's your average Squadmate.

Because we do.

Why do people like Tali? I can't stand her.
It's all a matter of preference. Kaidan has a lot of personality, and it's amplified in ME3, especially in his romance. I can't speak for Ashley in ME3, as I sadly had to leave her on sunny Virmire, but she was also a great character in ME1. They're both down to Earth, relate-able, realistic people, and they're a lot deeper than they seem.

Because Kaidan such a sweetheart.
He is a warrior and a soldier, he saw so many cruel things while going through this war, but he still have a soft and faithfull heart.

I can't speak for everyone but I liked Ash in ME1 because she seemed like a normal person from today, just in ME. Come ME2 at Horizon when she called me out about maybe I'm working with Cerberus because I think I owe (I didn't romance Ash in ME1 hardly Most the time it's Liara) I liked that she just laid it out there like it was I was dead for 2 years how's she know it's really me?

Than in ME3 Ash called me out several times about being controlled by Cerberus and would I know if I was? These were real concerns and I liked that some one addressed them, and Ash' grew on me more for all that.
I still hate the plastic surgery/BOTOX/and ****** and @ss implants that BW gave her. She don't look like the same Ash

I did not like them in ME2 (never really played ME1 enough) However you just need to look at my Avatar now.

PS Elvis was very popular. Kaidan not as much
