Just realized OP spelled "Kaidan" wrong.
Yeah, sadly that happens quite frequently. Even Bioware misspells his name.

I personally never got it.
Ashley was always the typical "I'm feisty!" female character, and Kaiden was just Elvis with a little less weight.
However, come ME2, they both turned into whiny, boring people. In ME3, I suppose they were okay, but they were still incredibly whiny. And this is without the romance.
God, I missed her jokes in ME3. She feels incomplete - and a lot of good lines got cut before the release (according to the leaked script).DaneWolf wrote...
I like Ashley mostly because of her voice and humor!

I didn't expect you to be perfect your first time playing. I just don't think it makes sense to hate Ashley for killing Wrex when she had to kill Wrex because you failed to persuade him to stand down (which is much easier if you do his quest) and so he was going to kill you. Hating someone for saving your life is just strange to me.Notice how I clarified that it was my first playthrough? As in, very first time playing? And I hadn't looked at any videos beforehand, like I do with all my games. I apologize for not being perfect on my first time playing through my first game with this sort of dialogue system.
Yeah, when he was like "I wish I had been there" I wanted to facepalm and tell him that so did I and that he had, in fact, been invited to be there. And a lot of his later dialogue in ME3 hinted (as I think someone else mentioned) that he seems to not only genuinely feel bad about the way he treated Shep before, but regret not going with her and being there to support her.
Though to be fair, this is only if you ask them about their problems. And I thougt everyone in Mass effect universe was whiny... Your companions just complain all the time. My mother, my father, my daughter, my sister, my son - Shepard help meeee. I cant cope with it on my own.

well for ashley. i like her because she feels like the most "real" character in the series to me. most of the other characters are exotic aliens, or extreme personalities. ashley feels like women ive met in real life. sure she has flaws, but flaws are probably the best thing to give a character. having characters with no real flaws (liara), makes them seem too perfect and boring.
ashley (and kaidan) are also the only ones who really stand up to shepard and question him. from the perspective of the characters, thats crazy. Shepard was DEAD for two years. came back to life and started working for a terrorist organization who you've personally seen do extreme experiments on people and assassinations of your own military.
theres also ashleys whole mistrust of aliens. she doesn't hate them like alot fo people think, she just doesnt quite trust them. which makes total sense if you pay attention to her backround. then her mild religious views, which i find nice, im not even religious myself but i find it cool when other people are, just because i dont believe in anything doesnt mean i should rain on anyone elses parade. her constant quoting of poetry (based on her childhood) comes off as she has trouble expressing herself so she uses poetry to do it for her, which i can totally relate to.
so yeah. she's just the most "real" character in the series to me.
I agree 100%. It's kind of sad that the aliens have more personality to them than the humans in these games. They look better too, at least in my opinion. Something about the human models just looks a little...off...I just think he (and Ashley) are just annoying and boring. I never used either of them on my squad in ME1 or ME2 when possible, because they just really didn't connect with me like Garrus, Tali, Wrex, and Liara did. And not just because they're aliens, but because they had interesting personalities and backgrounds.
