I've only played soldier's in the past, and I love them, but I've always had the idea that it makes sense that a character as important as Shepard would be a high level biotic. I'm looking for advice on building a vanguard that incorporates the assault rifile as a bonus talent. My basic concept is to add a bit more "soldier" to the vanguard while still retaining all the strengths of the vanguard. I also want to spend 8 points in Charm to get access to all the charm options in dialogue, so this is more of a role-play/performance hybrid. A few questions:

1. Is it more important to max out biotics like Lift, Throw and Barrier than weapons?
2. If I want to use Liara conistantly, would you max out biotics other than Barrier?
3. I've always maxed out Spectre Training with soldiers, but given that vanguards need more points than soldiers, would it be best to drop Spectre Training down to 8 or even 4 points?
4. Should I bother maxing out a weapon, like shotguns, or should I simply advance them to advanced level?
5. Do you find that vanguards similar to the one I'm building works bette with a wider range of support classes than a standard soldier does?

I only play on normal as I like a balance of gameplay/roleplay over going hardcore to either extreme. I know that being extremely anal about this build really doesn't matter, but I do want to get the most out of the vanguard class since this will be the first time I'm serious about using one.

Also, would builds that don't put points in Lift work well if the character is built more along the lines of Wrex, for instance?

A vanguard is a fighter/biotic. The main problem with him he is pointstarved as most of his skills are good. Max passive, pistols, assault training, get shock trooper spec and Master Marksman should bring you through veteran easily (hell through insanity too). Biotics are not top priority with him, unless you want him to, I dont think anything else really matters, just put things in whatever. Although Lift 12 is amazing, and by amazing i mean fully geared an adept can keep a Colossus nearly permanently in the air with Lift alone, (and everything lesser too ofc) Which a vanguard should be able to do as well, more or less.

Pistols are much better than AR, but if you want it for roleplay reasons, unlike pistols it doesnt have to be maxed, no.

If you're playing on normal, anything will work.

Singularity is often considered the best bonus because of Adrenaline Rush, but again you don't have to optimize on normal.

After unlocking at least Basic in all your biotics, get Barrier to Advanced asap. That will help you the most early on.

Master Lift is always recommended as it works on Geth Colossi.

If this is just one playthrough, it may be best to ignore Shotguns (as much as it pains me to say it) because the class is so point starved. To make my Shotgun Vanguard, I did the whole ' 3 playthroughs for free charm, get to level 60 ' thing. It's not needed though as Spectre Pistol plus Master Marksmen is the highest DPS in the game.

Yeah, I can't quite make an assault rifle vanguard work for me stats wise. I think I'll just level up my 55th lvl "paragade" solider to 60 in another playthrough (since he's by far the my favorite) and do "a renegon" vanguard in a more traditional way when I'm ready for a second run through the series.
