I apologise for the wall of text, and I am aware there are plenty of similar posts, but maybe BioWare are actually reading these (who knows), so I am posting a new thread on the remote chance it will be read...
After some 150+ hours of playing through EVERYTHING I could find, in all three games (except Bring Down the Sky for ME1 as I would always get an error trying to obtain it *meh*) the ending was atrocious! Why? Because nothing I did over the course of the trilogy mattered a damn! It did not even feel like a Mass Effect ending, lacking the gritty, dark and 'real world' feel of Mass Effect and honestly reminded me of the ending from Final Fantasy : The Spirits Within... Both myself and my girlfriend (who had been following the story from the start over my shoulder) were left speechless and in disbelief at just how hollow, empty and, for lack of a better term, unresolved the finish was...
Additionally, there are not 3 endings, there is one ending with 3 different colors... Seriously? BioWare could not even be bothered creating different cinematics for each choice?
The entire ending was hollow and meaningless... I did not necessarily expect everything to be sunshine and roses after the entire galaxy has been ravaged by the Reapers, nor did I even expect Shepard to survive and indeed had every suspicion Shepard would invariably and unoriginally become a martyr in at least one tired and over-used plot ending, though it would have been nice to be given a chance for all those little blue children to come to pass... I did however actually expect the decisions I made to have an impact and be reflected within the ending... Everything I had done was rendered meaningless by the entire fate of the galaxy's future boiling down to one single choice, which would have come to pass irrespective of how I played the game across the Trilogy and consisted of 3 barely differing options... This is what I perceive is the greatest problem with the ending...
I dunno, maybe it's my own fault that I bought into 3 successive games' worth of propaganda and that the 'butterfly effect' of my, at least major, choices would indeed be reflected within the end sequence as per countless interviews I had seen/read with BioWare and their disccusions about the 'thousands of variables' that will affect the outcome of the game... ME2 did this brilliantly by actually allowing your team, Shepard and even the entire crew of the Normandy to die if you did not make the right choices... Everything I had done over the course of the trilogy was based on BioWare's claims that even the smallest choice might have massive repercussions at the end, but the 150+ hours of incredible story and each and every decision was entirely negated and made meaningless by reducing the entire ending to 3 bland and very generic choices, with entirely identical cinematics, the only variation being the color of the beam emanating from the Citadel...
Do BioWare need to change the ending? No... Make it another dream sequence, which I'll add was another disappointing factor... I had expected a final dream before the end which would reveal some great revelation (watching yourself burn holding the kid is not a revelation) and the lack there of left me feeling it was all unnecessary 'filler'... Make the current ending that 'revelation', that in some form affects the course of the game in it's final missions... Rather than nearly dieing to the Reaper beam, Shepard is knocked out and awakens after the current ending in some ditch, having been rescued by your team who were following behind, but were not struck by the beam themselves and pulled Shepard to safety...
This would then allow for an additional series of missions as the 'beam assault' failed, forcing the resistance to go to a 'plan B' to get onto the Citadel... It would also explain why the Catalyst took on the appearance of the child, which was never questioned by Shepard... I found this odd as even under the direst of circumstances, you're always offered the chance to learn more about what is happening, often down to the most inconsequential details, but the Catalysts' appearance was completely overlooked in the dialogue and left me with the feeling this was not the end, untill the credits rolled... I really did expect Shepard to 'wake up' when using the Crucible, dust himself/herself off and go about killing more Reapers, especially since this was only about 40 hours of gameplay having done all marked content, it felt a little too short compared to ME1 and ME2...
Hell, I would have preferred to learn the Reapers won anyway and the cycle would continue, as given the disabled Reaper in ME2 is at least 37million years old, it would make sense that this is not the first time a cycle came close to defeating them... Despite everything I did being for nothing still, your choices could have been reflected in the final cinematic and perhaps even earn a reprieve from the Reapers for this cycle by pushing them back into Dark Space to regroup, before they return in a few hundred years or so since they have unlimited time and patience... This would be far preferable to being left feeling that my time spent was pointless, simply because it had no bearing on the outcome and everything came down to one last choice anyway, where my actions and choices were irrelevant...
The current 'endings' also pretty much destroy any possibility for future Mass Effect games, as there are no more Mass Effect relays, meaning no more long distance space travel, not to mention half the galaxy is now stranded on Earth... There is no future to the Mass Effect universe in all three scenarios! Life might persevere, but the franchise will not...
As a side note, another issue I had was that, based on the trailers, the final battle looked like it would be on a much larger scale and not just another series of commando operations, as even Shepard and Anderson are shown in a light where they are the spearhead of a major 'over-the-top' attack, reminiscent of World War 1, which was not reflected within the final missions... I can mostly overlook this issue as the entire game has been a series of commando actions, but a few 'stand up fights' with the Reapers would have been a fantastic way to end the game and would have brought even greater scope to the size of the conflict on the ground, at least in my opinion... This would even open up the possibility of using your entire team, and not just 2 companions in the final missions due to the scale of the conflict...
So, does the ending need to be changed? No, only the fact that the current ending, is the ending...
Release a DLC where the resistance goes to a Plan B, where your decisions after 150+ hours of game play are indeed reflected, and you are not left feeling the entire experience, though enjoyable, was completely pointless and a waste of time as it was all rendered meaningless by one final decision... Expand the scale of the conflict, put Shepard on the front line shoulder-to-shoulder with Krogans, Turians, Asari, Salarians, Quarians and, if you secured their support, even Geth, Rachni (another pointless exercise as all you gain is a few workers, I mean really, where are the soldiers?), Elcore etc...
Though I can see this as unpopular as a whole, I personally would even be willing to shell out a few more dollars to actually see Shepards' story come to a proper conclusion if it was enough to motivate BioWare to make it happen...
Issues and suggestions for ME3's terrible ending...
