DLC or Origins first?

I’ve seen some sporadic posts on this subject, but I
would really welcome a more “official” answer from Bioware or someone who knows
more about this subject.

Will the DLC be playable right from level 1? Is there an
advantage/disadvantage to playing the DLC content first before Origins? (i.e.
will the storytelling that you are experiencing be affected in any way if you
choose DLC first over Origins?).

Also, I assume that you would gather XP during the DLC
content… If this is true, and if you chose to do the DLC first to get Shale for
example, when you start Origins at a higher level, does the game take this into
account and modify the XP/level of the mobs? Or are you basically gonna take your
new “level X” party and wipe the floor with all the early content of Origins?

I’m not looking for any spoilers, but I would truly
appreciate some more understanding of how the DLC is intergraded into Origins
and anything I should consider before choosing which to play first…

Thanks in advance….

You definitely have to play through the origin first, the DLC isn't available until you're free from that.

Taleroth is right (no surprises there).

Origins first, DLC later... possibly MUCH later.

Yeah, you can install the DLC first, but the DLC doesn't just magically appear in game at the beginning.

You can access the DLC after leaving the city of Lothering, which is about 5 hrs in--at least or in other words, before you begint he Main Quests.

Got the guide Saturday at BB

Thanks get_loud, but if you go do DLC after leaving Lothering, and get all that XP and come back to Origins, is it going to be "easy mode" cause of the higher levels?

i'd imagine that the dlc works the same way as in ME, it becomes an optional part of the storyline, a sidequest(s), that you can do once you're into the main part of the game. that makes sense to me, and get_loud seems to know, although he clearly doesn't mind spoilers :o

The origins are what you do first, there are no quests before it.

Can you download the DLC after you've started a game, or does it have to be on your system before you start to access it?

i read somewhere on this forum or in the wiki that battles scale to your level, so any "extra" xp you get through dlc shouldn't make it easier, it'd make it harder if anything (later game fights(read higher level fights)are harder than fights at the start of the game).

It uses limited level scaling.  The scaling has bounds.

Can you be downloading the DLC while you play alah Mass Effect? Or like other games can you not download while you play?

Would be nice to know as I plan to download the DLC first/while I play.

thanks for confirming and informing me at the same time ;) but i'd imagine any xp gain from the dlc would be well within the limited scaling allowed, i can't see it giving more than a lvl tbh.

Based on this statement, I would assume that playing the DLC right after leaving Lothering (to be able to get Shale, and then come right back to Origins) would not affect the storyline and/or make a "real difference" in combat or level of difficulty based on the "limited scaling" of the game... I guess that's what I'm really asking.

Why I am asking this is for 1 reason only... I don't want to bypass a fun party member in the main storyline only to get him for a brief expansion. I played all of the BG series many many times over with all kinds of different party memebers... the only constant was Minsc in the group at all times. (even when it meant losing him when Edwin and him would throw down with no control on my part).

In the very long (85+  pages thread) about DLC in the old forums, it was clearly stated that yes, you can play on while the DLC downloads onto your computer. Just go to your profile and click on 'redeem promo code' i.e. the promo code for The Stone Prisoner [Shale]. I think it is even mentioned that you get a named NPC that would point you in the right direction for this quest. While the DLC downloads (and installs?) you can play the game.

As been stated, you've need to play the Origin story first, since this really sets your character up in the game; Lothering, after that place, knocks yourself out.

If you want to, (I think?), you can play TSP (shale) and WK (Warden's Keep) while your level 1. At Warden's Keep, you might discover that the game discourages you from doing that, but the game's isn't technically stopping you from doing this. You don't have to be a certain level to play Warden's Keep or to get Shale.

A side note about the scaling i saw somewhere a few days ago that said if you enter an area at a lower lvl then leave & come back after gaining more exp the mobs will stay at the lvl they were at the 1st visit (this may or may not be true )

That would make sense.

This was always true for the BG series... when I wanted to do my first solo run through the game I made a multiplayer game with 1 character and level him to about 8 or 9 and then saved him. I would then import him into single player as level 8/9 and start the game from there to make sure he was always above the level of the current fight (which was still challenging, but much less than starting at level 1 and trying to solo the whol game).

This was one of the main reasons for my original question as I did not want to change the dynamics of the intent of the game by brining in my toon in a situation (after playing the DLC) where he would be stronger than what was intended by the designers.
