Unless they make refusal canon and then produce a proper ending to Shepards story, ME4 will be a no buy for me. A proper ending is not persé a happy ending, but it's an ending where I don't have to accept having a messiah-role forced upon me. Especially when I through three games have roleplayed an anti-messiah.

But if he's not I'm willing to accept Allers as protag for ME4 instead.

But I prefer a game without Shepard and ignoring the actions at the end of 3 and the Reapers. I want to explore the culture of the Mass Effect Universe. I want to interact with Galaxy populace. Hell maybe it's time for a whole new Spectre with the race of a players choosing. Not squad base just making use of ME1's dialog wheel with ME3 reputation meter to great effect. You know the gameplay element that real Mass Effect fans care about. Going around solving disputes between races with the occasional incursions by mercs and pirates and maybe an heated battle against the Terminus system over territory disputes. And no Reapers, Leviathans, or Protheans in this story. I just want them to be nonexistence to ignore that disgusting ending that Casey Hudson had the gal to call hard work. And not a trilogy, as Bioware prove they don't have the capacity to make our choices really matter.

If they really want to break the whole Shepard thing. They really should allow the player to pick the other races. Because tere it would make it feel like a galaxy insted of a Shepard copy.
And if they pull a "Cloned Shepard" as the protagonist... I'm going to facepalm and walk away and get the game when its like 5-9 dollars

Glad Mass Effect wasn't an anthology where you'd get different characters every episode or game.
It's a known fact that people are afraid of change, and having a new main protagonist in the next game is a big change for people. However, as with anything in life, eventually people will get used to it. Who knows, maybe this new character will be even better than Shepard.

Or you get something like the playable joker portion in ME2 for ME4 Shepard, since he'd be either old or, well , dead.

I don't care about Shepard coming back to be honest. Too many game mascots keep making the rounds more times than they should.
And maybe I'm the only one, but I liked Hawke.
Bioware makes great characters, they should be able to make others we care about.
No, you're not the only one who liked Hawke.
I would have loved for them to continue Shepard's story, Miranda's story, Liara's story, Garrus's story, and basically the story of the universe we have grown to love. Unfortunately, with the direction they went, it no longer seems plausible. I'm more disappointed in losing the ME universe as we know it than losing Shepard as the protagonist....

As far as Shepard and company goes, they certainly deserve a rest and Shepard has more than done his/her part for the galaxy (who gets to do anything for a galaxy to start with). My problem with ME2 and 3 were their respective "stories" and the development of the main arc of the trilogy (Reapers threat and Shepard's actions to stop them). Had ME2 actually been a proper story-wise sequel and had ME3's ending been much more varied and had the lead writers (Mac and Casey) had not been so obsessed with reliance on speculation for self-satisfaction, then I would have been satisfied indeed with the "trilogy" and I wouldn't want more from Shepard.
Now the problem is I still don't want more from Shepard coming from the ME's universe that is the one we've seen from ME2 and ME3. If my Utopia, if anything, ME4 would be a sequel to ME1, and both ME2 and ME3 would remain self-contained alternative views on the ME's universe that would still be worth their own. And only on their own. So if you happen to be happy with them both then you still have them, and no one's pissed off in the end. But the reality is money talks and EA wants to milk the franchise dry until it's just as unrecognizable as a human-husk is from the original victim's appearance.
To those here who think that Mass Effect "is a trilogy", please try to dust off your naivety right now, otherwise you'll be in for the shock of your life when they announce Mass Effect 5 a few months only after ME4's release. Just mark my words, that Mass Effect 4 is the "first" of a new trilogy of Mass Effect games, and Mass Effect 7 will be the first of a third trilogy. The only exception is that if instead of going with Mass Effect 5 (or 6, or 7) they decide to do a Mass Effect MMORPG (and can't anyone just sell it from the horizon? Really? No one can?).
The franchise is way too much of a cash cow that demands to be milked to death for EA to just shrug it off past Mass Effect 4 and just call it a night... there's just no way. And that, will happen without Shepard.

I'm speaking for those who enjoyed both ME2 and ME3 because there are (will you really try to just innocently deny that some people do enjoy both games, including ME3's ending?) If you happen to enjoy both ME2 and ME3 and you still have them both to play, and enjoy (as I said), then why would you be pissed off in the end?

why not make a spinoff starring shepard and the crew.
just like command & conquer has 2 different story lines within the same universe.

No Shepard no Mass Effect for me. I tried it with no Warden in DA2, didn't work then doesn't work now.
Agreed.
I went in to DAII believing you would be able to import your DA character... turned out to be untrue.
I also went in to ME3 believing you could import your ME1/2 character... turned out to be untrue also.
As a result, my enjoyment of both games was all but destroyed because I wasn't able to continue the story of the character I'd created.
I personally think that if Shepard (MY Shepard) isn't in ME4 I'll have very little interest in the game. It's not that I don't like the ME universe, it's more that, to me, Shepard and ME coexist so completely that to seperate them would be a huge mistake.

I want to meet new people and see what they have to say, it's like having star treck with only capitan Kirk, leaving janeway picard and the others in dust
