They should do both, another game in the ME universe - spin off, and another Shepard ME game as well at the same time or around the same time. Bet both would be big sellers to.

This. Do both. Make both sides happy. And make lots of money while you do it. That's just good business.

Agreed.  I would buy both.  To see Shep and all those characters again on more adventures, that would be fun.  That and a whole new ME game with new characters, would be fun as well.

Even though I won't play the next Mass Effect game because Shepard is not the protag...it's too late.

They can't bring Shepard back for another game.

They should of realized how awesome of a character and characters they had...and stretched the series out to 4 or 5 games with Shepard and co...

...but his series should have always ended with the defeat of the Reapers...there should of just been more games before that happened.

Shepard is heart of Mass Effect,it doesn't matter who is protagonist in next ME,he won't be epic or cool as Shepard

Sheps's dead folks, get over it.

Bioware can create another great protagonist in ME4. Give us a Hanar hero please Biower.

Something else to consider: what else could Shepard possibly do that would be as momentous as stopping the Reapers? Even the Leviathans don't pose the same level of threat.

This was my point as well.

As much as I would like another game with Shepard...it can't be done. Shepard's story had to end with the defeat of the Reapers.

The endings make a sequel a nightmare.

Prequels are usually not that good.

Spin-offs are okay sometimes.

So the next Mass Effect game is going to fall somewhere between a nightmare and okay. I'ma skip it, Shepard or no Shepard. If Bioware follows it's current pattern, the game is going to be rushed and the writers are going to make mistakes in their haste. Not really worth it for fans.

If it really is dead to you, you don't have to buy the next ME game. The rest of us who still like the games can buy the next one. Everybody wins.

Just how I feel! Just my opinion.
I can't see any point to make a game in the ME universe. One thing for example we just destroyed all the Mass Effect relay's. (spelling)

They could do a complete new space saga and not in the ME universe, something entirely new
Now that Shepard and everyone else's story ends. Without them, I do not think it's ME.

I would also love one more Shepard game. Though I'm not going to whine about it, I just have some hopes that Bioware can achieve this level of great characters with Mass Effect 4.

Honestly Shepard wasn't my favorite character of the game. If they had made another Shep game, I would be interested in it mostly for the current cast of characters. Maybe the Destroy ending would be canon and Shep and the gang would have to restore order, and take down some dirty politicians.

I am hesitantly looking forward to see what they do with Mass Effect 4. It could be great, or just a hollow shell trying to follow the great Trilogy of Shepard. *Crosses fingers*

mass effect is limited by the endings. a sequel with a canon me3-ending as a starting point or one where our choices are overruled by the writers would suck.

a prequel would be very limited too and spinoffs usually suck.

no hero can live up to shepard, no turian is as cool as garrus, no asari is as geeky as liara and no quarien is as snuggy as tali. no krogan will live up to wrex and grunt.

without the characters and their stories, mass effect 2 would have been abysmally bad - the characters saved the game. the characters were the foundation of mass effect - without them, there is no reason to play it.

I know it's hard for people (myself included) to imagine a ME without Shepard. I just hope Bioware is still capable of making a game as good as these ME games have been.

If there's a good story, good characters, good protagonist, I don't see how the next ME would fail. The ME trilogy would become nostalgic.

ME has always been about the characters first and foremost.  Without great characters, ME would have failed miserably.

It'll just take some getting used to, and it's up to Bioware to make the transition easy on us.

good story is the first hurdle ... not an easy task - the mp-studio who was responsable for omega took over

good characters is the second ... biowares writers have always been good in writing characters. the me1-3 cast is not easy to top though.

good protagonist ... now it gets tricky ,., i in example disliked hawke and i admired shepard. the next pc is not going to be a military figure. i am devided here.

after mass effect 2s main plot and mass effect 3s ending, i am no longer willing to accept a crappy plot only because i like the characters. it worked in me2, because the characters are cool and with me3, because i wanted to see the conclusion to the storyarc.

still ... the meu was shaped around shepard, the crew and the normandy. whenever i see an alliance soldier, i would think about shepard, anderon and the rest. the relays and the citadel (both icons of the meu), will always remind me of the old games. this is not going to work for me.

i wish they would actually move on to a completely different Sci fi game.. Back in 2007 with ME1, i doubt they had plans for a ME4 . It was to be 3 games.
So what is this ME4 .. i expect huge resources on multiplayer instead of single given the popularity of the former.
at least it will be sci fi still,, i wouldn't want yet another game with friggin dragons and medieval lore.

OTOH, part of ME2's success was introducing some new characters that most of us liked. I actually think Bioware has shown an impressive range with the asari and quarians in particular. Samara was a good squadmate (though I still argue that the last part of her loyalty mission is off its rails), and we saw other characters from both races that run the gamut in terms of personality -- obvious examples are Sha'ira, Benezia, Shiala, Detective Enyala, Matriarch Aethyta, and Aria on the asari side; Kal'Reegar, Veetor, and the admirals on the quarian side.

Another military or law enforcement character would probably suffer in comparison to Shepard, but there's no reason they have to go that way - we've met plenty of scientists, politicians, merchants, colonists, and other types along the way. The main challenge is that, assuming the next ME game is still an action RPG, they'll have to find a way to justify the character's competence in combat situations.

I want more Shepard. A ME4 with Shepard would be a day one purchase for me and I never buy games on release anymore. I'd be skeptical about a new ME without Shepard but I wouldn't reject it out of hand.
