Why do people care so much about kills in a team game?

I care about kill stealing not because of scorecharts or credits, but because it's so damn frustrating to have enemies sniped out from under my heavy melee. Also, this:
Me: "Okay, just 3 guys over here, no problem, I'll just..."
Other guy: "OH HAI LET ME HELP YOU WITH THAT -blam- -blam- -blam-"
I hate that too
From my expirience its good to have suppor on heavy melee. Sooner or later you will hit lag or to many or a turret in your blind spot and a sniper suppor could mean live or death. And because your mostly far from your team a sniper could think "I will not run across the map to heal you now" to. So yeah, its better to play cop and not make enemys.

Aside from just "winning" the map, don't the map achievements give xp/cash points for the entire team at the end?
I mean, I always try to get the max amount of these as I can because I thought it was better for the team score at the end.
Overall it's co-op so it doesn't matter who does "best". But when I have 6 or 7 achievements on a map, with a couple of gold ones, I usually think "great, more points/cash for us all". Same reason I always rush the cap points as fast as possible, more xp/cash for everyone.

It's not much fun for anyone else when a Vanguard comes in and nova spams everything to death, making everyone else look and feel completely useless. That's one reason, OP.

I don't care how good a player is all i care about is having a good game with people who just want to enjoy themselves. If anybody is new or is worried that they might come across people with bad attitudes feel free to join one of my games.

When someone is outscoring me, I take that as a cue that they know what they're doing and I escort/protect them. Score helps determine team roles.
Pretty much exactly this. With the way scoring in this game works, you could potentially rank #1 in a match without having gotten a single kill. And, that's a good thing especially if you're playing a more defensively-oriented class; that means you're supporting other players, setting them up for the kills and generally being the backbone of the team. That's generally what happens on my sentinel and engineer; I don't focus on killing, I focus on dropping protection and controlling and the assist scores keep rolling in. The only time my score well and truly tanks is if a player quits, or there's a casualty in the wave and I go into overtime keeping my drone in critical locations to draw fire or spamming control powers on as many different enemies as I can to keep the odds even; even (hell, especially) then, my impact in the game is palpable even if my score doesn't reflect it.

I dont care what place I come in, as long we get full extraction for bonus xp...i hate it the most when someone is not in the extraction zone at the end, thats the only time I get upset with people...i dont worry about kill stealing...for the most part, the points i get for assists (sometimes 700-800) are worth way more than the person got for the kill (100-200) because I worked on bringing the shields and armor down, etc...
Exactly, the game is pretty well balanced in that regard. Alot people don't understand that it doesn't matter who got credit for the final shot, if YOU were responsible for wearing down an enemy you will see the assist number that gives the you majority of the points for that kill.
There was one kid I was playing with who yelled over his headset, "How'd you get a higher score than me, I killed way more baddies than you!" I quickly explained how it works, I also had 5 grabs and 7 revivals. If there's one thing I've learned about these players who "look" invincible in the early waves is that they all need rescuing. Lmao!!!

not to mention that if I see that a person is kill stealking on purpose, for example if they can see me setting up for a grab kill, and they snipe the person I am about to grab kill, I usually punish them by not reviving them if they get downed if I feel the wave can be completed without that person
You realize, that when sniping, you really don't see other people setting up for a kill. You aim for the head and don't look around. And if you're purposely not reviving people for things they may or may not have done on purpose, you're even worse than them. It's not your job to "punish", it's not even your call. Just don't play with them again. If someone is purposely not reviving, they're the one who's getting booted at the end of the match.
It's a TEAM game and you don't sound like a team player either.

I absolutely agree with Isis here. I'm also not clear on what constitutes kill stealing in any case. My situational awareness in the game is just not good enough to figure out who my team mates are trying to kill most of the time. And if they are trying to take down a higher level enemy then I figure that I should be helping them, not going off to a corner of the map to have a smoke* so that they don't get offended that I touched "their" opponent.Isis 524 wrote...

As for Vanguards:
Good Vangurads = good
Bad Vanguards = bad
I don't mind reviving a Vanguard a few times throughout a match - I mean, high risk high reward and all that. If it's every single wave then I might start getting a bit peeved.

I do my best to win, but I also do my best to top the scoreboard, it makes the game fun. You get points capturing objectives, points for revives if you pass milestones, points for kills and assists. There's little you can do in the game that doesn't award points, so if your score is really low compared to the rest of the team, then you're not pulling your weight, simple as that.

I do get a lot of assists, and generally score decently, but I should not score top unless the team is in poor shape.

I started mp as an infiltrator. Didn't know jack about the maps -- so I camped at good sniping spots and consistently guarded the team's backside. Or I tailed somebody else, made sure his tail is clean. I didn't know better, so I guarded someone whom I hoped knew better. Thus, always was at the bottom of the ranking, mostly assists. No probs, I was just starting out.
Then I got to know the game, my infiltrator got better gear. Still played support, cleared the team's backside, did cloaked capping, etc. Then one game I was the highest level with good gear (in Reactor IIRC), and I started slaughtering the enemy -- that's when I knew I could do it.
My second character is a Turian Soldier. Rock and Roll with a Revenant, or a Claymore, or a Geth Shottie. Still a support role, I'm not out there to charge into the enemy, I just follow somebody better (probably a Vanguard) and made sure the bad guys trying to flank him met Concussion Spam and Shottie-to-face Spam. It works and I like it... but I still rake in more Assists than kills.
My third character (now) is an Asuri Adept. See a pattern? Yup. Still stays behind, Warp Spam and Stasis, Greet-with-a-Shottie. Assists out the wazoo. Kills? Hah!
The whole point of ME3 MP is to assist the team to extraction. Or at least the highest round the team can reach. Individual kills adds to that but so do assists. So what if I only got assists? If the assist was a stasis that allowed the Krogan to run over an irritating Marauder that was buffing the Cannibals, isn't that good?
My suggestion is to change the post-game display just a wee bit. We should recognize individual killings with the medals, but instead of having a bar graph that shows individual scores, let's just have one bar, with percentage contribution by each member. That way, we stress that it's the sum total that matters, but still recognize the individual effort.

Its simple: What do you see at the end of the round? The players ranked according to their score.
So the game tells the players that having the highest score is important.
that information isn't important at all.

Anyone I met that cared about score was also trash talking and being generally rude, the majority of players just want to complete the mission. The sad thing though was that the ragers are usually pretty good and I like to play with good people.
Either really good or absolutely horrible.
I played a gold match last night as an asari vanguard. Got matched with 2 infils and an engineer. They spent the whole game chatting and hiding behind cover, even saying "let the vanguard do it" (Irritating as hell!). Obviously I couldn't solo gold. After the match, they swore and yelled at me for "kill stealing"
