This is from Reddit, it might have been mentioned here before, but some rather observant fellow spotted this genuis intertwined story about Joker's family and the rambling PTSD commando in Huerta hospital. All credit goes to SoulUnison for figuring it out (and explaining this, mind  you!). To be honest, I was rather stunned over this:

You know how Joker talks about his family that lives on a farm way out on the outskirts of civilized space?

You know that PTSD Asari at the Citadel Hospital that talks about how she was stranded on a farm way out on the edges of civilized space?

The girl she rescued, accompanied, ended up killing the indoctrinated family of, and eventually murdered to keep her crying from alerting nearby enemies was named Hillary. Joker's sister is named Hillary. That Asari Commando with PTSD in the Citadel Hospital killed Joker's entire family, and none of the characters even know its happened.

But the really terrifying part was when I realized what this meant for the implications of the "Allow the patient to have a gun" option that comes up at the Spectre Terminal.

She probably knows. She spent several days with Hillary.

They probably had a bit of a rapport going. Hillary would would be worried sick about the family that she knows is on the farm and the brother who's personal pilot to the famous Commander Shepard and doing who knows what.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Asari get to know Hillary pretty well, and lots of trivia about her family members. And how could you not mention you brother is best friends with Commander Shepard? And I bet he's famous enough at this point that the Asari knows who he is.

So she stages this rescue mission, and it goes bad, and she kills the family. And then, to save herself, probably thinking it won't even buy her that much more time anyway, she kills Hillary. By some miracle, she's rescued, and she ends up back on the Citadel. But, she knows who she's killed. And she can't take it. She wants out. She knows. And every time Shepard walks through the lobby she knows.

And every time we pause over her or her doctor's shoulder, listening to this story we think is totally unrelated to us, she's panicking inside. "Does Shepard know? Does Shepard know I know he knows!?" And she keeps pleading for the gun nobody will let her have. And then, one day, an orderly gives her a package.
"Special Spectre Authorization"
A gun. Straight from Commander Shepard. To most of us, hitting X on that report was just "paperwork."
But to her, especially if you played a Renegade Shep, we might've basically been saying "Yeah, get it over with."

TL:DR -  The Asari commando killed Joker's sister =(

Not a terrible conclusion. All things considered, it makes sense.

Yup, caught that, too. I never got the "Oh goddess, it's Shepard vibe!" I think her guilt over killing Gunny had been enough. She's refused to take showers since and she keeps begging for a gun. She believes that if she had never taken the shower (thus leaving her unarmed and unarmored), she could have defended that farm including Gunny.

"I'm so sorry, Joker." Were the first words to come out of my mouth when Joker revealed his sister's name.

Sorry about the original format, seems copy+paste went a bit haywire there. Should be fixed.

But to me it is a good example of the brilliant storytelling in this game. I completely missed it (which is a shame, I usually tried to get as much as I could out of the stories), but when I figured it out I was really impressed!

Damn shame, though. Damn shame.

Would it have killed them to make that a tad more obvious?

Wow, I never heard that in the hospital. However I got the other side of that story on the commons were the lady who was helping her was talking about how she couldn't go anywhere near the Asari because she would start screaming then saying she saw the girls pic and she looks just like the girl that died.

Damn, I am going to have to catch that on my current play through with my femshep.

Er..she didn't kill that family.

Her partner did and she killed the little girl because the husks were hearing Hillary's whimpering after she broke her leg...

That's what broke her mind...

She's by the window, sitting next to a therapist while she recounts her experience.

Really all of the side stories that you happen upon the citadel are great, one of the few hub worlds that just feels alive.

I have no words to do this justice.  That's horrible and amazing and insane.  They really sneak in some brutal punches in the details.  This is even worse than that poor Quarian kid. :crying:

She herself feels she killed them all, though.  As she insists to the doctor, saying, "If I hadn't bathed, leaving my clothes and gun out of reach, I might have been able to do something, to help them."  She feels she's failed, that they all died because of a bad choice she herself made.  Nothing the doctor says sways her from that adamant belief.

Probably Jona. In ME2 on the Alarei, you find a log from the mother as she's about to be killed by Geth which ends with her saying "I love you very much" directed at a Quarian called Jona. Then on the rescue Koris mission in ME3 you find the father just before he dies too. Poor poor Jona

Well . . . Damn. Poor kid, that's for sure. They really made the bleak part of war shine through, and I can appreciate that. Truly.
