Greets,
I brought DA:O Deluxe edition from Gamersgate as I missed this when it was first released which now I regret. However, what I am finding (and the game is good, better than I thought) is that it is incredably tough. I probably have not really sussed out to use the tactics, but some of the battles are really really hard, and its only turning the difficulty down to easy that I am able to get past some battles, such as the ogre near the beginning. Also, I dont think I made such a good character - I am at redcliffe at the moment and I am getting slaughtered on the second part of the battle. I am loosing Morrigen all the time, and she is the only spellcaster with AoE spells that has a good impact.. Alastari too goes down quite quick and if I directly control either of these characters, then my main character doesnt act on his own inititive and I have to manually tell him to attack.

I am thinking of restarting the game with a new character as I am finding it tough. Good game, but challenging. Does anyone have any tips/hints etc? Thanks.

This is a non-spoiler section, but i will try to help. There is nothing wrong with going easy on your first time you don't know where everything is etc. When you get more experience there's another place you could go first before you go to Redcliffe at least that's what i do. Did you get some armor off someone in lothering? That's useful early game. I always have trouble with the ogre.

I found that part really tough, too. Make sure you've recruited everyone you can in the village before initiating the battle, because that helps.

I also recommend playing on easy for your first playthrough - this is a tough game, and that particular fight can be a pain. If I'd tried playing on normal or higher during my first playthrough, I would have torn my hair out.

If you have a save before Redcliffe, and don't mind having to redo all the sidequests there again, I would suggest reloading and heading off to the mage tower first. That'll get you some more experience, items, and other things that will make Redcliffe much easier. =]

What class are you playing and what talents have you picked?

Edit: I would strongly discourage you from simply wandering away from Redcliffe and going to a different place before beating the fight there. That would be bad.

Hi
I restarted a new game as a warrior human noble, and am finding things easier than playing as a Dalish Elf. Finally managed to recruit everybody I could at Redcliffe, and won it. Now at the mages tower trying to save Connor, and there were tough battles too in the castle. I think it was more of a case of not really understanding the game that much, although I still have not got the hang of using tactics yet. Good game, quite fun at times.

There are tactical discussions in Bioware threads and elsewhere in general and regarding the ogre. Since this is a no-spoiler thread, I won't discuss the ogre tactics, but I've subsequently used those same tactics for other similar nasties...

One thing to remember is that simply point-and-click battles are the hardest to win. Running in and letting the enemies simply have at your party is just asking to be steamrolled, particularly when the enemies include archers and mages.

You can use strategic retreats to reduce the number of attackers or to temporarily be out of sight of those archers or mages. You can also use archery at a distance to lure only a few nasties from a larger group. The Taunt Talent used by your tank become more and more essential to protecting your mages and archers, and spells like Cone of Frost or Sleep or Mind Blast can temporarily disable enemies that are going after the mage. Also remember that enemies tend to go after the first they see or the first that attacks or damages them, so get the tank to attract their attention first. That too will relieve pressure from your mages and archers. Mind you, the "attack the first you see" tactics also tends to be the poorest tactics for your own party to follow, though the alternatives require more patience and planning.

To bolster your tank (usually Alistair for me) you'll want to get him Taunt and especially the middle shield talents. Shield Wall is the best as it defends against the most and prevents knockdowns with Mastery, and if you alter his Tactics slots, you can make him keep Shield Wall up constantly. Also toss DEX points to him as well as enough STR to wear heavy armor and get all the Shield talents. Tanks need to be able to take and avoid hits, not necessarily smash the best. CON is also good, but DEX often prevents the need for high CON (until elemental damage comes along). The mage spell Force Field is also great for use with the tank and only a Tier 2 spell: running in your tank, using Taunt on all the enemies to get them fixated on him, and then casting Force Field on him means the enemies all attack someone they can't injure for a few rounds while you can pummel, fire upon, and AoE at will.

Use pause a lot also to survey the field and assign different characters different tasks, though I've found that killing enemies with group assaults on individuals is more effective than merely injuring lots of enemies with scattered assaults on a group of them: dead enemies don't damage as well, so the fewer of them the better. If you can get Morrigan to disable the worst nasties, you can pick off the lesser nasties without feeling the damage. You'll learn about armor advantages also. I still don't completely understand it, but when equipping armor watch the top two numbers- armor and defense- to see how/ whether it boosts.

My first playthrough briefly started on Normal but I've been on Hard ever since the first Harrowing, so I know these tactics work... Not sure what play enjoyability advance Nightmare would be, but I may try it later...

Thanks all for the help. It still is hard though :) Good game, although quite heavily scripted but the cutscenes and the history behind the game is quite interesting, I can see why they called it a spiritual successor to Baldurs Gate, but it reminds me most of Neverwinter Nights 2. I must have played 12 hours into it so far, but still have only scratched the surface of the game it seems. Loads of DLC too, which is good.

umm, I'm sorry but people in this thread seem to be confused. This is a Spoilers Allowed forum and there is no reason to be vague about anything.

Since you are stuck at Redcliff you are going to have to gut it out. What spells have you given to Morrigan? just list what she has of now so we can be specific.

Alistar: do the same, we need to know if you wasted any ability points.

what is your character class and abilities?

Do you have a 4th group member? If you dont have one, you screwed up and you should start over.
Yes, the dog counts as a group member.
