There are a number of threads on where to find the "best" armor in the game, but as I move towards finishing my second playthrough and move towards my third, I find I know where all that is. However, both times I have a hard time upgrading my armor between (say) Lothering and and hitting about 38 strength. This particularly a problem with Alistair, who needs to split his points between STR, DEX, and CON.

What do you do as a "midrange" armor solution? I know the chestpiece from Varathorn isn't bad, and it's pretty light, but what do you do besides that?

I've noticed that the loot progression in this game is not very good. There is a wide gap about where you are from level 7 to 12 or so where most of the stuff you find will either be poor quality, or unusable and you won't have much gold to get anything better from whatever shops you have available.

That being said I don't think there are a lot of "nice" magical armor pieces for people with str below teir 5 or 6 equipment in the game to start with.  You'll probably be stuck with mundane gear (veridium, red steel) around that level for a bit until you get your STR up.

Wish I had better news for you ;)

Kill the High dragon and have Wade make you Medium Armor out of it's scale.

Killing the High Dragon is not what I would call a "midrange" solution.

This is the range forcefield on a tank, or having a tank run around the battlefiled leading the enemies behind him doesn't feel like cheating, since that mid range armor is about as useful as marching into battle naked.

In this range I would say having good crowd control and dumping your warriors for a pure mage/rogue party can help. You can always pick up the warriors once you've got enough levels to hit that 38 strength. Morrigan with sleep/waking nightmare will go a long way to boosting your survival chances and Wynne should be picking up the glyphs as soon as you can get her. You should also make use traps and poisons if you have them. I wouldn't craft them, but the ones that drop should be put to good use. Basically you have to rely on inflicting damage to your enemies faster than they can inflict it on you and preventing your enemies from fighting.

don't be afraid to break set bonus, the powerful pieces you get midgame are single items and they don't affect your fatigue that badly so use them.
