Are you shure the "humming" is not just the engines?

This is weird; I started a second playthrough and Vega said the humming line right after I picked up Javik (which was the first mission I did after Mars). In my first playthrough he only said it near the end of the game.

Don't know what this means, but it struck me as odd. Of course it could just be a random line Vega says, but in my first playthrough I would badger him for responses until they weren't new anymore and I never got the humming line early in the game.

Maybe Protheans give off a humming sound some folks can hear or it's just Javik's epic suckitude causing the sounds.

The "humming" in engineering (which is assuredly the engines) has a different throbbing frequency than the hum in the cargo bay. While the overall frequency (pitch) of the sound might be filtered as it passes through the ship, the frequency of the amplitude modulation (throbbing frequency) wouldn't. Assuming BioWare's physics are right--which they would be, since the recording artists would simply play the engine room sound through a barrier of some sort in order to emulate the physical basis of the sfx--the "humming" Vega mentions should not be the same engine hum.

Plus, from a meta perspective, how does commenting on that sound develop Vega's character?

I just attributed it to the engine.

Is that what the Reapers want me to think!?

I don't know but I would assume that Vega, stereotypical lunkhead that he is, would know what an engine sounds like and not bother Shepard with something obvious like that.

If Shepard really is being indoctrinated, then whose to say that the humming we hear while on the Normandy isn't the indoctrination humming? Tali does mention the quiteness of the ship, which is why she stays near the engines in ME1...

What was this a reference to? I thought I read somewhere this was a symptom of indoctrination.

It's EDI modifying/downloading herself into EVA's body.

"Are you sure its not just the engines"

LOL

Yeah... cause in a game that explains VERY CLEARLY that hearing HUMMING sounds is a sign of indoctrination... obviously the writers would create that line as just a way for a character to notice the way the engine sounds....

... yep... no indoctrination theory here... at all... gotta be a conspiracy theorist to believe that nonsense. :/

PS

The humming sound is actually the people who are adamantly against the Indoc Theory covering their ears with their hands and saying "Hhhhmmmmmm, I can't hear you... la la la"

Yeah, and there's that mention of adrenaline proving to be the best catalyst in inducing indoctrination. Scene where Shepard is rushing to the beam and gets shot by Harbinger? Adrenaline pumping through the roof, thus making Shepard very susceptible.

That's a very good point too, and none that people have raised so far. So in ME3 it is revealed that:

1. Parts of sovereign were used in the construction of the new Normandy
2. Adrenaline supports indoctrination

Seriously... why reveal things like that in ME3 unless you want to do something with them?

The "Do you hear that humming?" goes all the way back to ME1 when you are first on the Citadel with Kaidan and you hail him near the "statue" of the relay in the lake... he says something like "That statue, can you hear it humming? It makes my teeth tingle."

Lol I thought this was a clear reference to the humming of the mass effect core in the ship, which has been more or less audible over all three games.

apparently there's more to everything eh?

Reaper. IFF.

That's all I gotta say. It's the same ship that the Reaper IFF was on.

It's Reaper tech, did the Alliance know about it? For all we know it could still be on the Normandy.

Obviously, playing through ME3 just furthermore gives you an idea that not everything is bloody okay with Shepard.

while i support indoc (to a degree) i find it far fetched that he's hearing a indoctrination device, its a space ship and hes in the cargo hold, its just the engines.

One of the things. Still not convinced though, although I am in doubt.

The grass and tree like shapes that appear after you are hit by the reaper beam in london (you have to look back to see it, it was not there before) come straight from you're nightmares. That one has me spooked. Oily shadows and all.

But why?

It'd be like us sitting in the car and you asking me if I hear that sputtering.  Yes.  It's the engine to the car.  Of course I hear it.

I just want to say I suspected I felt along the way especially with the dreams that something more must be bother shep then just Earth. While indoctrination theory sounds cool and turns out to be fact well then I feel like bioware didn't exactly do a good job at giving subtle hints IMO.

Ye Vega says this to me all the time. its the LAST thing he says. like when you clicked all the better dialog out of him. then he keeps repeating this when you click him till more meaningful dialog comes around. I have heard him say this dozens of times.

its Indoctrination.

I dont know how people dont understand this but even then Vega is not indoctrinated.. but indoctrination is causing the noise. you can be affected by indoctrination without being fully indoctrinated. The point where you can no longer control your actions makes you indoctrinated.

I know a lot of people go around saying "OH LOL JUST THE SHIP GUYZ" but seriously... why would they bother with that dialogue at all if it was just ambient background Normandy noises? Add in the fact that it rarely shows up.

After hearing about this, I started a new game to try and hunt down when he says it, since I wasn't sure if someone was pulling my leg, but he does... its just rare. He said it for me after either the Ardat Yhakshi or Geth Destroyer mission, when he is at the weapon upgrade station. I made a save point right there, but when I reloaded it, he only went "hey."

It just seems like it would've been unnecessary if it wasn't meant to be suspicious.
