Has anyone ever found something extremely useful or valuable in a locked chest? I know I never did, nothing that was worth remembering, yet I still kept Lei around. I even went to the trouble, as sad as this may be, of doing throug the deep roads without her, and then coming back through after an area was cleared to have her pick the locks I could remember. Totally unnecessay.
Personally, I think that all locked chest should contain something of value, dependent on the skill needed to open it. Even if what's found are only trinkets and gems and what not, stuff that can be sold to a vendor for a nice profit. Something that truely justifies the investment into lock picking.

Not really. It was mostly vendor trash for me, easy money, I always have Leliana around for the locked chests.

The only useful item I EVER found in a chest was Howe's Shield (If I recall correctly) locked away in a room in his mansion, I'll be ditching Leliana as soon as I can get Oghren.
