On Normal mostly (had to turn it down to Easy for a couple of fights, turned it up to Hard for a while for testing), listening to all conversations (never ESCing through to make them go faster, since it was my first time and I had 'overhead text' turned OFF) and delving as deep into all the conversation trees as I could, doing nearly all side quests (got the achievement for 'side quests done' well before Landsmeet, only skipped a couple mostly due to bugginess), all DLC done, got the Traveler achievement ('set foot in every area of the game'), and read the entire Codex (though I'm a bit of a speed reader so this doesn't take all that long) wound up with me at: over 90 hours of playtime prior to the Final Battle.
My next couple of playthroughs were faster, of course, but still over 50 hours each, probably. I'm not a speed runner, though... I've no interest in that, so I'm happy it's not fast.

Star Ocean 4 took me 150+ hours, doesnt mean SO4 is a 150 hours game, its up to you if you want do do the 3 extra bonus dungeons and powerlevel to 255 (thats right I said 255) and do 100's of side-quest.
But I dislike how some advs like, oh this is 80-100 + hour game, even star ocean developers say their game is 40-50+ and their upcoming game (end of eternity).
To play DAO beyond 20-40 hours, you basically have to ditch the mainstory and look for side-quest and exploration for smaller things.
Thats the thing, while JRPG like Persona 4 for ex, which can take 100+ hour still has a main story for over 50 hours.
Mass Effect for ex, took me 16 hours to complete (1up reveiwer 12 and 14) however, on my 2nd playthrough it took me 42 hours, why? because I did all side-quest and exploration, not because I wanted too, because I felt like I missed out on something.
Thats the problem with Mass Effect, how should the player know the main story is not even 15 hours long? so basically I'm expected to ditch mainstory and go for side-quest (which sucked in ME) and try to make the experience longer?
Same can be said about DAO, the only good side-quest are probably the personal and DLC like shale+wk, I have no problem with smaller side-quest but none were really worthwhile doing.
And why should I do quest just to drag out on the experience? It should be because of great content.
Oblivion for ex, has a mainstory in 15 hours, but the side-quest (like the guild ones) took me 50+ hours to do, and they were fun, and while the 200+ dungeons might not have been perfect, atleast I could pick and choose.

Now... as for time spent playing the game, I've gotta be pushing 200 hours total by now. ><

I also wonder why people today play rpg's and do nothing but the main story, rush through the game and then complain that it's short. A rpg is meant to be experienced in its entirety.

This is NOT a troll post. I love Dragon Age. I took my time, I did the entire campaign. I talked to every person, went in every room, and explored as much as I could. I did almost every sidequest I could find with a couple exceptions just because they weren't interesting to me. When it was all said and done however I got just under 40 hours out of my experience. Which is fantastic in my opinion. Especially since I got around 25 from Mass Effect, and DA was almost double that time.
My question is what did I miss? Dragon Age is such a great game, and I want more. I'm not saying its short because it isn't in any way. I just want to get 100 hours like everyone else. For those that are getting everything you can get out of DA, what is it you're doing? Is there just a MASSIVE amount of side quests I'm missing or what?
My first playthrough took me about 70 hours and I only had like 60% completion. I did at least enough side quest to get the "easily sidetracked' achievement, but I didn't spend a lot of time reading codexs.
I was pretty OCD about quest though...I think I played around with the the 4th summoning circle trying to "guess" the correct order for about 3 hours before I finally broke down and came to the forums. When I saw the solution I about smacked myself silly.
Anyways, was on leave all of November....and according to steam have put in a total of 172.3 hours. Stil only At 90% completion rate too....sheesh. I can say I def. got my moneys worth......awsome game and I look forward to playing it again in the future. I think I am about burnt out atm though.

Really? I've completed the game with one character, played up to the landsmeet with two, and now even though I pretty much roll through the game with my third, a warrior (not reading codex or anything), I've soon passed 40 hours and I'm not done yet. You got rocket boots or something?
I'm on my 5th playthrough and only passed the 30 hour mark once and already have all the achievements. So you guys are really slow or something is wrong.

Are you claiming 30 hours total on a Combined 5 playthroughs? I would find that most difficult to believe.....

Your claiming a preschool reading level? I said I only passed the 30 hour mark once. Playing the game 5 times doesn't make it any longer, it just means I played the game 5 times.LtlMac wrote...

I tend to be very slow. Also because I am playing on hard, combat takes some time for me.

just finished orzimar, will go and start landsmeet now.
i read most all of the codice (sp) and try to find as many side quests as possible
the game is so visually beautiful and has such a wonderfuly woven and complex story and setting, i just want to drink it all in. when i see a prominant point of terrain, go to it and drop and spin the camera just to drink in the view.
the more i play the game the more i enjoy it. kudos and thanks again bioware.

Well, technically....we're talking at least a 3rd to fifth grate level here....I mean, give me some credit where credit is due. Oh, and if you've only passed the 30 hour mark once I encourage to dive deeper into the game as I would imagine you are missing out on quite a bit of content.

No, I think it must have something to do with loading times because I can get through this game and do the majority to all of the quest in that time frame. I have 0-3 second loading times.
