The whole purpose of ME2 story was/is about "forming the best squad to take down the Reapers" you go and collect them all ( like pokemons) fight with them to get their loyalty pull out the destruction of a collector base and keep them alive through a suicide mission.
At the end of the game when you see the Reapers coming into the galaxy you can read on their faces that they will follow you anywere and you know they will be a force to rekon in the last battle.

Flash forward to ME3 those squadmates have all been doing whatever they were doing only 2 come back to your squad to help you, but they were there in ME1 to start with, and most of them are given 20 or so lines a side quest and they will send you a mail to say "I m not there but I am fighting somewhere".

You then check in the assets to see their contribution to the war effort, and then just go back to multiplayer cause those random peons you send to shepard are actually helping more than the best squad to take down the Reapers.

Even the situation Shepard is in and the start of the game reminds me more of ME1, you get your authority back, council won't help you openly, they have better things to do, you have to go save Liara who is once again in a lab with Protean stuff and she is trying to decypher it.

Even your love interrest from ME2 whichever you took, can't compare to the one from ME1 just check the romance scenes and it will be obvious to anyone, compare Liara's scene and Miranda's, it is like comparing a film on a bluray and another on video tape.

Aside from the whole Horizon got "collected", collector base is down, ME2 doesn't bring that much in the grand story of ME 3.

Why did I spent so many hours doing all my squad's missions if in the end I could just have done just enough to have everyone alive and then drop the game there?
