Glory- the 54th Mass. knows they're going to get crushed, but they make their assault anyway.
Saving Private Ryan- Tom Hank's character, Captain Miller, as he lay dying. "James... earn this. Earn it."
Braveheart- "Freedom"
Halo:Reach Dr. Halsey "Your body, your armor; all burned and turned to glass."

I love that game so much for how they handled it. It was foreshadowed by the intro sequence that he would die. You knew from before the title screen that it couldn't end any other way.ldcfirebird wrote...
Persona 3. Main character dies at the end after sacrificing himself to save everyone. A sad ending but done really well.

Indeed.
Instead of ripping off Deus Ex and slapping on 3 coats of paint - they could just have ripped off DA:O
That game even had an epilogue.
That's actually what I originally hoped to get in Mass Effect 3. Have Shepard go around, build alliances, become a symbol for the fight, then at the end either die saving the galaxy, save the galaxy and survive (either at cost of someone close to him, or at no cost, depending on how well you played), or the Reapers win. Add in variations for what happens with your allies, have a suicide mission for the end, similar to Mass Effect 2, where your choices MATTERED and a final confrontation with TIM, ala Saren, and the game would've been PERFECT.

The Descent
Both of these movies had great downer endings. I think the message we must keep pushing is that it's not that we wanted a happier ending, just one with more closure and meaning. And just an overall, better written one.

Gaming - DA:O if you actually go for a sacrifice rather than making Morrigan shag someone.

One of my all time favorite games. Actually the entire Persona series is really good.

And that's still more satisfying than the ending to ME3, if for no other reason than you can avoid that ending if you want to, whereas all three endings in ME3 are basically the same.

You go to hell. No matter what you do. But it's still one of the most beautiful endings ever.

Imagine a scene where you and your crew are basically waiting for the inevitable and we end up with the most powerful "goodbye" scene in gaming history with a great Shepard speech worked in to explain how even in the face of death, their actions had not been in vain because it defined not only them but the entire galaxy too; that no one who dies fighting and on their own terms and amongst their "family" dies in vain.
You could then flashforward to the next cycle of life uncovering a codex documenting the heroic actions of the Normandy crew.

The bad ending to Amnesia: The Dark Descent has your character die and be eternally tormented by the sins they've committed.

Heh, fully agree. Am I wrong to like that ending?
And on the topic of Bloodlines, White Wolf has always had the policy to ignore what you don't like. Want to believe that Gehenna isn't around the corner? Done. Is Caine the taxi driver? He may be named that in the files, but if you don't like that interpretation, then he's not. Combine that with the multiple endings, and I didn't see Bloodlines as a downer at all, even if that's what canon said. Guess that's the difference between the two companies. If Bioware tells me just to ignore what I don't like and keep on playing, I don't know if I can.

atleast there you had the choise to die or not to, you could plan this in diffrent ways by being smart. If you wanted to die a hero you could. if you wanted to survive and marry the king, you could, if you wanted to survive and look for your child, you could. Not here,![]()
+1. I loved DA:O even if my character looked like a hairless chimp.

Yes, I was all ready for 'my' Shepard to die, and see what happened to the universe afterwards - whether they live in the peace and unity 'my' Shepard had created..... but no.
I got Red beams instead of Green or Blue beams and .... nothing.
