Just remembered one: Planescape: Torment.

You go to hell. No matter what you do. But it's still one of the most beautiful endings ever.

Yeah, I fell in love with Planescape set after Torment.
Nameless One is screwed from the start of the game and the whole thing is you discovering that.

Althought that game kind of suck too, because you get closure with HIM, by being thrown on Blood War finally, but the team find themselves stranded in the negative material plane, with the guy with the key dead for good.

I'd say, the Legacy of Kain series.

The first game ends with sacrifice for the greater good or become the dictator ruler of Nozgoth.

And then it keeps on going from the "bad" decision, but explains it really well afterwards. And although Defiance's (the last LOK/SR game) ending is not something conclusive:

Kain: "Most ironic of all, was the last gift that Raziel had given me. More powerful than the sword that now held his soul, more acute even than the vision that his sacrifice had accorded me. The first, bitter taste of that terrible illusion: hope."

It was a sequel set-up... to bad the game didn't sell well enough for a sequel...

(It WAS possible to send your team back to Sigil, but they all vowed to find him... etc...)

agreed. but otoh, it's not just "you go to hell", it's "you go to fight in the blood war to serve your time for all the sins of all your incarnations". even in such a bleak setting there's hope that you'll survive (particularly seeing how goddamn powerful the nameless one is).

<3 planescape: torment :D

and on that note, fallout 1

goddamn, that was a good downer ending.

Persona 3. Main character dies at the end after sacrificing himself to save everyone. A sad ending but done really well.

I love that game so much for how they handled it. It was foreshadowed by the intro sequence that he would die. You knew from before the title screen that it couldn't end any other way.

Bioware got owned so much by  PS 2 era  JRPG it almost shameful.
By the end of the game when Memories of You starts playing you fully realize why Minato... did what he did.

Oh yeah speaking of the downer ending put Drakengaurd on the list too...

Dragon Age: Origins. Also note the sacrifice ending was a CHOICE.

Indeed.

Instead of ripping off Deus Ex and slapping on 3 coats of paint - they could just have ripped off DA:O
That game even had an epilogue.

That's actually what I originally hoped to get in Mass Effect 3.  Have Shepard go around, build alliances, become a symbol for the fight, then at the end either die saving the galaxy, save the galaxy and survive (either at cost of someone close to him, or at no cost, depending on how well you played), or the Reapers win.  Add in variations for what happens with your allies, have a suicide mission for the end, similar to Mass Effect 2, where your choices MATTERED and a final confrontation with TIM, ala Saren, and the game would've been PERFECT.

this is more or less the ending I was expecting based on bioware's comments

stephen king's "the dark tower" - i know some people will disagree but i think it was a good ending. it was convenient, he got what he deserved and it wasn't without hope

dragon age:origins - the sacrifice choice was also the most "moral" choice if you think about it. and no matter how it ended, you saw your choices mattered!

true grit

Red Dead Redemption. It was so sad and it fit so well with the theme of the game.

"Amnesia: The Dark Descent"

"Seven" is practically the perfected form of the downer ending.

The movie "Dark Side of the Moon"

ME2, if you epic fail the Suicide mission.

Downer and bittesweet endings can be just as, if not more engaging than archetypal "happy endings."

My entry for a downer ending that works is "The Dark Knight". Batman, after losing the woman he loved to a madman, had to sacrifice his good name in order to hide the fact that Gotham's White Night had been turned into a monster.

The thing is, however, I don't think ME3's ending is an example of a downer ending that doesn't work.  ME3's ending was an exampe of a complete nonsense ending.

Does Bastion count? While both endings had a hopeful tone, neither actually ended all that well. One risked repeating history (and apparently was repeated if the changes in the NG+ mode are anything to go by) and the other involved trying to make life work in a post-apocalyptic future.

Battlefield 3 - "Your team has lost!" :)

But seriously Red Dead Redemption had a great ending. I shed some tears when I saw it.

And to a degree Samurai Champloo, it was so sad when they parted ways.

EDIT:  Not to forget Blade Runner (Directors Cut). Strange to see a synthetic being more human than the humans around him.

Read Dead Redemption.

Planescape; Torment.

True Grit (the Coen Brothers version at any rate).

Know what makes these endings good? They fit the theme of their respective universes. ME3 ends on an absolute downer, despite telling us for two games and a half that, if we fight enough, we can get a somewhat good ending.

Xenosaga Episode III.
Sort of similar as far as the outcome but the difference is that at least Xenosaga gave closure.

Persona 3.

Read Dead Redemption.

Dragon Age: Origins.

Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines

Fallout series.

.... Mass Effect 2 :| Reason I give that face is because it's a very good example of your choices affecting the ending and it can either be a happy ending or a tragic ending. And basically that face expresses how I felt towards BioWare not using ME2 as an example for how ME3's endings could have worked.

And even if they went the Deus Ex route at least Deus Ex always had an epilogue that talked about the consequences of your choices.

Hell, I'd even add some of the Silent Hill games to this list.
The Pyramid head ending still gives me chills.
Ironically, those were even shaped by choices you made in the games.

It really was the last good one. Such a shame the way the series has fallen off. Square used to be fantastic storytellers.

Indeed. And Silent Hill 2 had some pretty depressing endings too depending on the choices you made throughout the game.

.... Lets not forget the awesome UFO endings too :V

Sort of surprised no one's mentioned these two:
Cowboy Bebop?
Wolf's Rain, even?

Pretty much all of the others I was thinking of have already been mentioned.

Oh yes, I can't believe I forgot about those as well (I was only thinking in terms of games).

As for novels:

A Farewell to Arms
Of Mice & Men
The Green Mile
The Grapes of Wrath

"to kill a mockingbird" comes to my mind.

Also "Call of Juarez 2 Bound in Blood" though the story was pretty thin, the sacrifice of William at the end to redeem his brothers was very effective.

And let's not forget Shakespeare's tragedies.

"Star Wars Empire Strikes Back" though I think the force music theme at the end is turning the relatively depressing ending 100% around towards highly optimistic. Plus you know Return of the Jedi and how the saga ends.

And in the comedy videogame genre: "Monkey Island - 2: LeChuck's Revenge"
At the end you feel confused and saddened that it all seems to be the fantasy of a young boy...
...or is it?
