Just picked up this link somewhere. It answers some questions. A lot of them actually. For example, Shepard is shot back to earth by the beam, and that's why his body is in London rubble.

Just doesn't explain the Normandy in the end. And the relays exploding without destroying earth, but I'm pretty sure this can be explained by it being a controlled, designed explosion instead of an asteroid in your face destruction.
