The dragon is hyped so much because it is a hard fight if you focus on offensive tactics instead of control.

Spot on, in my opinion. I managed the fight pretty comfortably around level 12 too, with Wynne, Alastair, Leliana and a DW Warrior PC. Between all the pausing and micromanagement, it took a while heh. Wynne is absolute win in this fight - melee character grabbed? Not a problem, Heal + Group Heal takes care of that, and any health lost to random fiery balls. (Greater) Warmth Balms help loads. I would've used Wade's Dragonscale gear, but I took on the High Dragon on my first trip to Haven, didn't get to pop back to Denerim to get 'em made.

Rushing in headlong and trying to burn the dragon down before anything nasty happens isn't likely to work at the mid-range levels. Precise control of your party members is certainly key, as danny said.

I don't know if this trick was discovered or not. Have your ranged guys hang back away from the ring of stone pillar ruins at the bottom of the valley. Send your tank down into the ruins near the middle. Have him blow the horn. The dragon will come crashing down and get stuck in the ruins. Use force fields or heal or poultices to keep your tank up, and just blast the dragon from afar with arrow and staff. The dragon never turns around, but can still use the tail, wings, and roar.

I found all the dragons to be very exploitable. This playthrough I'm not going to abuse the system and give the wyrms and straight up fight.

The first time i killed him was with a 12-13 party with rogue Leliana, Morrigan and allistair, and it required a lot of fire salves and healing potions.

since I read this i reloaded and this strategies really worked XD. You can even kill him with a non-mage party, if you have enough armor penetration (rogues are good with that) and dont engage in melee (and dont atack from behind of course XD )

Stern, Lel archer, Morrigan, and my 2hander

indom, stand the warriors away, they're immune to knockdown so let the dragon have at them, it's damage is limited. When the high dragon takes off, move the wizard and rogue the second it does as its going to land on them. The heal spell is enough to stop the damage and when the dragon goes for the chomp chomp use pommel strike.

It's an easy fight imo.
