There's one thing I just wished to point out briefly. I am one of those people who love Mass Effect from the very first "Is that the kind of person we want defending the Galaxy?" all the way up until Shepard passed out on the floaty thingy. Everything between those two points are things I enjoyed, even if I'll admit the scanning in ME2 got tedious after a while. I'm also one of those people who absolutely can't abide by the giant steaming turd that followed. This game won't be replayed as a result. I won't spend a cent on DLC (unless it's new endings) since I know they're worthless anyway.
I can now liken the Mass Effect franchise as the most delicious looking tower cake I've ever seen constructed. The whole thing just becoming more and more fantastic with every new layer of cake added. Then for some reason, just as it was almost finished, the chef decided to top the whole thing off with a giant steaming turd. The cake itself is still fantastic, but no... not going to eat any now.
However, this proves something else as well, guys. Something important.
We would never have reacted like this if we didn't all love something to begin with. We wouldn't react like this if Bioware weren't absolutely amazing game developers who delivered unto us some absolutely amazing products that we all allowed to better our lives. We react like this because our expectations were high. We "knew" the endings were going to be astounding. We trusted in the game developers who had yet to wrong us. Well, except for those who didn't like DA2, but even they mostly separated that from the Mass Effect series.
To those who are getting angry or flustered at the amount of vocal dislike there is for Bioware and the endings right now, I want you to take something in particular out of the above jabbering about expectations: These reactions are compliments to what Bioware have done. The anger just shows how ****ing amazing we all thought Bioware's stuff was up until these endings. That we think they are sub-par and frankly insulting compared to what we've seen in the past can be a bit hostile, sure. It still doesn't change that the great majority of us are still saying flat out that we love(d) Bioware all the way up until the final few minutes.
It's sad that this is how the whole thing ended, really. Bioware has been that one single developer that I've had perfect trust in up until now. Yes, I even loved DA2. I acknowledged a few flaws in it, sure, but as someone who's been playing RPGs since Zork (and games since C64) I found the game itself to be a high quality product. There's been some DLC that's made me go 'eh...' and I've had to admit that Bioware weren't perfect, but they had my trust nonetheless. They had my money as soon as I could give it to them, be it through pre-orders or whatever.
Now... now that trust has been broken. They no longer get my money until I have played the product first. Until I've seen the endings and carefully checked for steaming turds. I already do this with a lot of developers and I am really saddened by having to add Bioware to that long list. I really did love them and I really did love Mass Effect.
It's depressing to find that Bioware didn't.
Expectations and implications.
