Please, make it as in Baldurs Gate! Let us violently open containers and doors with force (a strenght check?) ! I don't want to be forced to keep a rogue in my party to get little boxes open. It's unrealistic that Ogren, Shale, or Sten etc cannot open a container, or a locked door with brute force.

Sign please, this would be awesome for this game.

Pretty please, make this STICKY too :)

Would be nice to have that option with risk of "ruining" some of the items inside if done in such fashion.

What was it called before in BG... broken junk? broken weapons?

Yes, maybe a chance of ruining fragile items such as potions.

Cannot remember ruining items in BG from opening containers thou.

This would be wonderful. It makes no sense that Shale cannot smash open a chest.

Only if it ruined the weaps, too.

How could shale possibly smash a chest without smashing what's inside ? :?

You don't have to smash the entire chest, just the lock. It should be no problem, especially for a golem. What I would REALLY like though would be to put lockpicking with the other SKILLS not on the talent list. I thought they were clear that non-combat skills would be separate from combat talents. Which do you want, Arrow of Slaying or lock picking? I never chose lock picking. :(

I never quite understood the whole "breaking weapons inside" bit. I mean, I would think it the better option to just aim for the lock or hinges with sufficient force rather than to just reduce the entire chest into splinters. The latter kind of defeats the purpose of opening the chest at all if your method reduces the chest and all within to scrap.

Except, unlike in games like NWN and BG there were no doors or chests that have to be unlocked to progress in the game.

Unlocking chests and doors in this game is completely optional and only serves to bring extra exp/revenue and the rare good item.

Look at me, I and my party of brave and courageous heroes have slain many darkspawn, we have traveled across the kingdom of Ferelden. We have saved the Elfs of the Brecilian Forrest, we have defeated hordes of undead, we have crowned kings and slain many abominations and destroyed the Archdemon. Our strength is unmatched and our bravery is unparalleled, we hav-------------- ehhh what? Open a chest? Sorry man we don't have a rogue with us.

Why not give mages a "Knock" spell?

Here is how I would do it:

1) Allow warriors to break the chest (STR check) and keep all items inside (no breaking)

2) Give Mages knock spell (Magic check)

3) Rogues can unlock chests just as before, but they are the only class that gains XP from it

4) Triple or quadruple the XP you receive when you lockpick a door or a chest

This means rogues still get something very nice when they lockpick and other classes don't miss out on items/money.

I don't remember there being a locked chest in the game you HAD to open or not progress, at least not the main line. It definitely would be nice to not have to haul a rogue around all of the time.

It would be nice to have alternate ways of opening chests, however the simple ridiculous fact that there isn't tells me that it was at the very least considered. The thing is, a rogue is already relatively useless as far as a necessary addition to the team. I'm sure Bioware realized this and made it this way on purpose.

Rogue's only purpose, as far as I can tell, is for roll playing.

I will say they are really fun to play as in terms of damage output. However on my third playthrough I really dont want to have a rogue in my party....

i just love how every unopened chest is messing with your mind :) and what is more stupid is that 99% of chest items are useless. i hope that bioware doesn't change a thing.

I think you guys are crazy. I love the Rogue-only aspect of lockpicking.

Rogues are harder to play, so if I didn't need one I probably wouldn't bring one along, and thus I wouldn't have to learn a bunch of new tactics. Where's the fun in that?

DAO is a challenging game in many ways. That's what makes it good.

Hmmm... okay changes if only warriors and mages also have to devote 4 talent pts to opening chests, etc.  Or perhaps make rogues have it for free?  BTW, I really like the xp idea.

Did you read what I said? :P

Warrior and Mages should not lockpick, but atleast Warriors should be able, by brute force, open some chests and doors.

Yeah, in (spoilers...) Redcliffe, you can knock-down Dywnn's door regardless of class, so, uh, why can't the chests?

Mages should totally have an unlock chest spell.

Might as well add a boost health by 100% spell as well.

Maybe a cloak spell

Or even an increase strength spell.

How about a win spell?
