False alarm, I just started a new game and got the message, so it's a beginning of game message not an end of game one.
Oy!

Some twittering with the devs - are we trolled or they are up to something that will blow us all away?
User 1: "I still want to believe you guys are sneaky trolls and have something going on you don't tell us yet. Can I get a cryptic reply?"
@masseffect: "The sun, it shines. www.youtube.com/watch"
User 2: "You are either a massive sadist or a beacon of hope."
@masseffect: "Can't it be both?"
User 3: "I kinda feel lost after that ending...not what I expected and left me feeling everything done was for nothing."
@masseffect: "We know it's a lot to take in! But hang in there. Your decisions matter."
User 4: "Are you holding something back, that could quell the large amount of frustration from the community, a tiny hint would be enough."
@masseffect: "Mike Gamble already said on his twitter, if the fans knew what was in store, the reaction would be different."
User 5: "I loved 98% of ME3..but something has to be up w/ ending..too much talent at BW for that business. Keep my saves?"
@masseffect: "We're keeping our saves, that's for sure."
User 6: "Fans are people too. Playing with their minds isn't that nice as it may look like to people from Bioware."
@masseffect: "We're not playing with anyone's minds, we are answering what questions we can and recording what feedback we receive."
User 7: "Its not that the ending was taken in the wrong direction its that it makes NO SENSE. Ashley was on the Normandy? she [was] with me."
@masseffect: "Probably a good thing to be cautious of."
User 8: "Do y'all have any ETA when more news will be released? Dying for news on a new ending/DLC."
@masseffect: "No ETA yet, but you will be updated via Facebook and Twitter when the news is available."
And some more:
User 1 -Well, i think i'll stop naggin you and trying to get you to talk about the indoctrination theory.Good game though!
Merizan - I want people to make up their own minds right now, then when more people have played we'll talk
User 2 - then I want to SEE that he was lying. I want to get up and finish the fight with Commander Shepard. Then retire.
Merizan - augh. want. to. discuss! Staying spoiler free for now
User 3 - But should've confronted the kid instead. Shep went meekly into the night.
Merizan - are you sure he went meekly into the night?
They're a company and ultimately need to make a profit. They can't treat us like this! We're in a recession! AUUUGHHHRGHGHGH!!....

Because they COME DOWN TO VISIT YOU THAT DAY. IN THE BEGINNING OF THE GAME. IN THE FIRST TWO MINUTES.

If you paid any kind of attention to the dialogue, VS is genuinely surprised to meet Shepard that day.

Yea. I got the same message from My LI Liara after I beat the game.. I was like hmmm... what dose this associate to?
My guess? They plan to commit suicide ASAP after seeing the enormous @#$%ing mess of a galaxy you left behind, and it's just some vague hope that they'll be able to yell at you in the afterlife.
So THAT'S what that knife Tali is carrying for, it's multipurpose: Killing herself and then stabbing me to death in the afterlife... it all makes sense now...

For the realistic point of view, all indicates that Bioware made that ending and though it was a good one.
On the other hand, all those mysterious tweets seem bizarre and too cruel to be just lies. Also, we can all agree that the ending feels.....out of place, compared to the last 3 games.
So, they went nuts on the last 10 minutes and actually though that ending was cool after 2,9 games of awesomness? this was all planned? doesn't seem that wise to let your game price fell and all your fanbase angry, if they planned something, they better tell us before PAX is over, because many of us won't care at all about all the "extra content" they can have if the ending is not fixed.
Kind of like this

I'm not sure what kind of clarification you (or others in this thread) need but all I can say is that I did not use the Datapad app my first playthrough but when I started a band new playthrough using the Datapad app I got the message from (in my case) Kaidan immediately.
I know that some people received it after the game was complete but as far as I can tell this is not intended as you receive it while you're still on Earth and someone asked @MassEffect why they received a message from Kaidan after the game was complete and @MassEffect responded with, "Did you check your mail before you started the last mission?" or something to that effect.
If you don't believe me start a new game, as Viceroy suggested.
Edited to add: Looking at the app now. Kaidan's message was the first message I received and came through when Shepard was still on Earth.
The second message was from Anderson and came through at the beginning of the Mars mission: "Losing comms. It's hell down here, Shepard. Get us some help. Will be in touch---when I can."

Reloaded the last save... nothing.I guess you have to actively be online to get anything, which means I'm missing a bunch of the messages. Was hoping to get something from Thane. Boo.
Thane sends only two messages...and they don't change based on LI or not. Which kinda stinks.
Also yes, it's Apple only right now. I think they are trying to work on an Android version, but nothing developed yet. But for anyone with an apple product, it is a really really cool app, and SO useful in keeping your Readiness Rating up. After you buy the upgrades (including the advanced ones) you can have a ship that goes to each section of the galaxy and it gives you over 3% readiness. Once you get your score to 100% to start with, you only have to send ships out to each section 2x a day to keep it at 100%, no MP needed. SO NICE!
Also unfortunately, it is a message from the beginning of the game. I finished the game (both destroy and synthesis) and my Shep lived, but didn't get the message from Kaidan until I started my next playthrough. I was really confused (and hopeful truthfully) but yeah
Also for those that have the app, check the email frequently as you play. I've noticed that in one playthrough I didn't check it terribly often, but on my third playthrough I did and got a TON more messages that I didn't get on the second playthrough, so it seems to only load so many if you've gone through too many "events" that would trigger messages.

I don't have a phone that can run this app. Is there somewhere where I can see all the messages characters send to you on the net?
The messages can be found on the Mass Effect Wiki if you search for Datapad and then click the link to Mail (Mass Effect: Datapad) that just slightly down a little. Or here: http://masseffect.wi...ffect:_Datapad) (if the link works this time! <_<)

That message, along with Shep breathing (I know, technically the same thing), and after credits when the old person (anyone else notice that depending on choices, it's an old lady?) telling the kid he'll tell 'one more' story... oh, and that after beating the game, the ME team looks forward to further adventures in the ME universe... I don't know why anyone would think we're done here.
