I was attempting to describe the way I'd made my Shepard's face to a friend and found myself a little stumped. I'd much prefer to just show him a screenshot, showing how she looked with the various scars and things and the way I'd colored her armor, but I have no real idea how to take screenshots on the playstation 3.

I've read that it's possible to grab screens using a keyboard and the usual commands, but it's not clarified if this will only work with a proprietary Sony Playstation keyboard or if any USB compatible keyboard will work. In addition, I've also read that some games will not allow the taking of screengrabs in consol versions.

Can someone please offer information or advice on this topic? It doesn't seem like the procurement of decent quality .jpg stills should be this difficult to get information on. Thank you!

Using a keyboard and a print key only works if the game supports screenshots. Unfortunately most games don't and Mass Effect is one of them :(
The only way to make proper images from the game is with capture hardware like the Blackmagic Intensity Pro, but that's a very expensive solution (~200$). Or if it's ok to capture in SD, any cheap (~30$) TV-capture card should work.
Without further expenses the only alternative is to make a photo of your TV.
Or as a workaround for at least getting nice images from the face: download the Demo for PC, import your face-code and make screenshots :)

Some games on ps3 let you take a screen shot, press the PS3 button then move over to photos. If it does let you it will have a Icon saying "Save Screenshot" then the game name.
