I'm having a bit of a problem with multiplayer. Here's how it goes.
When I joined the multiplayer for the first time, I got a 'starter pack'. I opened it, and among the stuff inside was a Soalrian Engineer unlock. So I decided to play the Solarian Engineer, and it was pretty good.
The next time I logged into multiplayer, for some reason I had a second starter pack, but at the time I didn't think of much of it.
However, when I tried to join a game with a friend quite a while later, I noticed that Solarian Engineer showed up as being a locked class again. I'd really rather not lose this character, so I haven't gotten off him since then, but I've long-since gotten him to level 20, and would really like to be able to switch to other characters.

Do note that the official word from Bioware was about a week ago, and we've gotten no updates since. The only thing they've said is that they are aware of the problem, and given a little advice on how to avoid it for people who haven't YET been hit with the bug.
There has been no official word on a fix. As you correctly assume, so long as you stay logged in, you can play the 'locked' character. Switching off him will break this loophole, and you'll have to unlock the character once more.
