Seemingly every a new post appears that is either a male complaining about how Morrigan betrayed him at the end or a female wringing her hands over having Alistair sleep with Morrigan to keep the two of them together (I suppose some posters cross genders too, but mostly the gender of the poster corresponds to the gender of the PC).  These characters seem to be evoking genuine feelings of anger, sadness, betrayal, and loss.

Are these two the best characters Bioware has ever made?

Are these two the best characters ever in an RPG?

People aren't used to less than happily ever after endings, I suppose.

Alistair is pretty good, I'll admit. One of my favorite characters in any game of late.

Morrigan? One dimensional evil witch with an attitude problem and a single-digit IQ.

In my opinion, they were #1 and 2 respectively in this game. However, its hard to compare them to past rpg's, as in the past, there was not the technology, nor the budget to make so many cutscenes and voice acting.

Aribeth from NWN is probably my favorite. And there were several from Baldur's Gate that I liked immensely as well, however its been too long since I played that, and I forget the names....but...the druid half elf....the wingless avariel.....and the drow assassin who my character managed to convert from her evil ways.

As for Morrigan betraying me....I did not feel it was betrayal....she warned me, at least all the signs were there. And she did not stab me in the back...she actually saved my character's life. And there is still the chance (in a sequel) my character can track her down, and try to reunite with her. If not for her "betrayal" my character was most likely doomed to a VERY short life span, as he would have had to sacrifce himself to kill the archdemon. What good would her never-ending love be if my character was dead?

So Alastair is one of your favorite characters ever.  It sounds like you hate Morrigan too.  Is that because you hate the way her character was implemented in the game or because you hate HER?

I wasn't too fond of either of them. Alistair was an idiot, and Morrigan was a b****.  However, I would rather have the son of a Theirin on the throne instead of the daughter of a paranoid psychopath.

Both. While she's hateful and abrasive in her own right, there's also the fact that her rank stupidity is just plain illogical (her disapproval of absolutely everything without considering the need to take specific actions for instance).
That she still comes out on top despite being a) evil and B) dumber than a jar of picked cabbage means she gets ahead by writer's fiat. And I hate that.

Edit: To add, her only signs of actually using that soft organ in her head is when she argues against the existance of the Maker. Only to be stymied by Leliana's silly "oh you don't believe in anything, you must be sooooo lonely!" Yeah, coming from the girl who totally wasn't lonely enough to make up an imaginairy friend to talk to her~
The one time Morrigan earned the right to snap back with a devastating comment and she misses it.... idiot.

Romanced Alistair and followed friendship path with Morrigan (my main party was Al, Morrigan and Zevran). My Dalish rogue just saw some good in everyone. Truly bittersweet when she gave Alistair up after Landsmeet and again when she convinced him to sleep with Morrigan (she was afraid he disliked being king so much that he would sacrifice himself to the Archdemon). Enjoyed both characters immensly. Alistair was sweet and funny and very noble and Morrigan did not know how to be a friend. I found Alistair to be a great improvement from Anomen in BG2 and similar in some unexpected ways to Valen in NWN-HoU. Morrigan was self serving because of the way she was raised, but she did learn how to be a friend in the end (she did not even leave until after the final battle). I do miss Minsc (and Boo) but I think Bioware has outdone itself on the DA:O companions, I ended up liking them all and was high on the friendship path with everyone except Ohgren (barely into friend range) at the end of the game.

I generally see only positive reactions about Alistair (except for people who say he's whiny). People also seem to either love Morrigan or hate her. A good post on here said if you were to match characters to food products, Morrigan would be marmite.

Morrigan grew on me over time, but I liked Alistair from the start.

I strongly feel that everyone that hates Morrigan never really went through all of her conversations or romances. She is one of the best done characters in rpg history. Seriously, her attitude and everything about her is explained in the conversations/romance.

These are probably the same women that love Allistar and his whining.

Edwin will never be surpassed in my books. I may be mistaken, but is the Male Human Noble's "cocky" voice the same guy who voiced Edwin? I catch some familiar rings from time to time whilst playing such.

Sten was my favorite in DA:O. I thought Alistair was funny, if a bit too much on the whiny side. Shale was awesome as well. Kudos to the the folks who dreamed up that personality.

Well don't forget that people interperet characters in different ways. I can see how someone playing a female PC would have a more negative view of her, at least if they are romancing Alistair.

Alistair is an idiot, but he is my idiot. The lack of family, undesired bastard position, abandonment by father figures and nut-job religious upbringing in a feudal society has made him into a miopic, sassy, witty, love-hungry, duty-deluded man without a political bone and without social smarts. The charismatic voice, good looks, witty remarks, boy-scout outlook makes me want to mother him. My first PC fell hard for him, because she was a lonely Dalish girl, in an alien situation and society. His innocence and eagerness won her over, but it was Morrigan POV that was more compelling.

Morrigan grew up in the isolation of the Wilds, with little human contact, without a clan, but she understands nature and survival, the chains of the Chantry, persecution and hate.

Once, a good relationship is established with Morrigan, she opens up and her motivations and moral code are on display. She is not evil, gullible or arbitrary. Your friendship is strongly reciprocated and she is sincere about her feelings for you. Her brutal honesty and lack of tact might be cutting, but she won't be deluded by ideals.

Allistair was my PC's love, for all his flaws and charismatic strengths. Morrigan was her Best-Friend Forever, even if she conceives the child. Love is selfish, self-serving, but also inclusionary and imperfect.

In my first game I didn't romance with Morrigan, and just dismissed her and what I thought to be a crazy plan of hers.

And Alistair was a good comrade who willingly offered to give his life to save mine. I saluted his bravery.

Looks like I'm one of the few who didn't make the list that the OP mentioned, through sheer luck. :P

I'd hardly call them the best characters. They're great in some respects, but they're somewhat railroaded in others. I think Alistair's personality is great (unless you're romancing him), I think Morrigan's stories are great, the acting powering them both is great.

But the way thier stories end in forced catch-22s is silly.

Morrigan is ignorantly evil. I've romanced her more than once and read just about every line she speaks.

Shes not stupid or one dimensional but emotionally retarded with regards to love. Sure she can be irrational as hell but we know why that is, she is "brain-washed" by Flemeth at a young age.

I like Morrigan if only because I'd like to see her story complete, too many questions unanswered.

Alister is good character, albeit he tends to whine a bit too much for my liking. I wouldn't go as far to call him one of the two best character however.
Morrigan, on the other hand... certainly.

Alistair, having not romanced him, liked him as he was the perfect sidekick. Loyal, and makes the amusing wisecracks from time to time. If he seems a bit whiney, it only serves to make my character look even more heroic. And to be honest, I don't see him as that whiney...its more of a deadpan, dry humour. He does not mind making himself an object of derision, for a laugh, or to make a point. And a further bonus, as a sidekick, you need not worry about him hitting on the girls, leaving them all to you. ;)

Morrigan is very complex if you take the time to listen to her, with the frame of mind, that almost all she knows about civilization and society was influenced by Flemeth. And of the companions that you have during the course of the saga, she is the one that really leaves you wanting more.

I would say they are the best characters Bio has made so far. The writing and VO just worked together brilliantly.

IMO they can in some ways overshadow the PC in importance as charcters in the DA world, which is something I hadn't seen in RPGs, but had always wanted to.

To be slightly off-topic but close (being that it's still a party member) I liked Oghren myself, I think half the time I talked to him in camp he told me a joke and dropped like a stone shortly thereafter, drunk off his arse....too bad he ran out of jokes quickly. I won't say he's the best character but he provides me with more entertainment than not, damnable dirty dwarf. Hehe.
