Garrus was definitely getting arrogant about his abilities, but, he's been a damned good friend and thought he could use the morale boost. I missed on purpose.

Chose miss on purpose simply for Garrus's line afterwards "I'm Garrus Vakarian, and this is my favourite spot on the Citadel!"

I need to put Garrus in his place every now and then, so therefore, I choose to shoot the target. Your shot's close Garrus, but mine did more than just ruining your helmet.

I never understood that scene much anyways, it was fun going someplace on the citidel to shoot stuff, and talk about life, but meh.  Id rather shoot some shuttles and blow **** up with Garrus than shoot bottles and talk about...stuff.  I bet I could get away with it too as a Spectre, we'll say it was Cerberus assassins.  The council will believe that.

I shot that bottle because Garrus deserves honesty and I wouldn't expect him to miss on purpose either. plus, he already knows he's a damn good shot.

I like the dialogue better if you miss, plus I honestly missed and didn't let him win. My Shepard is a Sentinel guns aren't his forte.

I missed on purpose. Garrus's comments if you romanced him are just too goddamn sweet.  And besides, I doubt my squishy Adept who uses nothing but pistols and SMGs could out-shoot Garrus OR out-fisticuff Vega.

I shot the bottle on purpose.

I was role-playing that Shepard, so I told myself (as if it was my Shepard) "If I shoot, it'll add fuel to his desires to challenge and progress, be it in jest out of friendship or actual competition from arrogance or sheer willpower". In other words, I wanted to show Garrus that in order to fight the seemingly impossible foe we have to deal against, he'll have to do better than Shepard. It was a way to tap him on his shoulder and say "keep at it buddy".

On the other hand, missing on purpose would have felt like a self-imposed lie on Shepard's consciousness, especially considering that Shepard wouldn't lie to Garrus, nor pretend that he wouldn't know that I missed on purpose to start with, Garrus isn't stupid. Even if Garrus' verbal remark implies confidence on his part by seeing Shepard missing it, deep down inside him he might still be wondering if Shepard missed on purpose, and if that had been the case, he'd be wondering what kind of confidence Shepard has about him.
