I'm playing an Adept who frequently never even USES a gun. It would have felt like a complete lie if I'd automatically hit the bottle 'because I'm Shep and I'm awesome'.
Nah. I missed, because my Shep would have missed, plain and simple.
If I'd been playing a more gun-oriented Shep, though, I probably still would have chosen 'miss'. While I've never romanced Garrus, I've considered him my Shep's best combat buddy since ME1. If the contest would've been long, I'd have played it out neck-and-neck with him 'til the final shot... but since that one shot was all we got, I would have let him have it.

Garrus was definitely getting arrogant about his abilities, but, he's been a damned good friend and thought he could use the morale boost. I missed on purpose.
I Shot the target as punishment For Garrus not knowing what "Fish in a barrel" meant
And Said to myself "Like fish in a barrel!" lol

Soldiers who can't reliably hit a target with the arms standard to their training and service don't get promoted to Lt Cmdr, and certainly don't get selected as Spectres.
Just sayin'.
Which is why you have to miss on purpose.
I get the feeling that Garrus knows this aswell, and he's just being a good sport about it.

Personally I think murdering Mordin, sabotaging the genophage cure and killing Wrex is worse than shooting a bottle.iEscaflowne wrote...

Well, yes. My comment is a response to people who keep saying things like "I play adept/vanguard/engineer, my Shep doesn't even know which end of the sniper rifle the bullets come from!" No, regardless of class, every Shep is an excellent marksman with all five weapon types. Not because She's Shep and She's Awesome, but simply because she is a competent marine.

I don't know if he knows that you missed on purpose, but he certainly knows that Shep *could* have made the shot. Like, if you threw a hundred bottles for each of them to shoot, both of them would miss a few no matter how good they are because of the wind or a sudden nose itch or just the vagaries of chance. So Garrus, at the most, thinks he managed to catch Shep on that unlucky forty-ninth bottle or whatever, and he's definitely going to rub it in while he has the chance but he knows it doesn't actually mean he's better. Just like if Shep wins, he's not like "oh my God you are clearly infinitely my superior." Because one bottle doesn't mean anything, it's too small a sample size, and therefore just a convenient excuse for them to bust each other's chops.

Besides, Garrus doesn't need me to miss the bottle to make him feel better. Nor does it prove anything about Garrus' skills. He'd beat me honestly anyway.

Sometimes you have to hurt the ones you love - at least my bullets didn't hurt either of them for very long.

And in my Mind Garrus knew i missed it on purpose. So i imagined ... somewhere, when all of it was over and Garrus would be sipping a cool drink at some beach... telling his story.. he'd smirk and admit grudgingly "And i knew that bastard missed on purpose that day" or something like that.
Yes, this. It was complicated for me because I romanced Garrus in ME2 but then chickened out at the last minute - it felt too weird and I ultimately had to admit to myself that it was all a bit ikky and I wanted him as a friend and so on. So I felt quite conflicted at this point: however close we were there was a lot of stuff always unspoken, some basic dishonesty and posturing all the way through. I like to think he knew I missed on purpose and was too gracious to let on, as well as never being one to refuse the opportunity to showboat a bit. Nothing in that trip resolved things for us, but maybe it cleared the air a bit.

Bolded for emphasis. Shepard's an N7. I don't know what kind of soldier would be good enough to acquire said rank without being an excellent sharpshooter.
