I have seen a growing number of posts from poeple who believe that they have "discovered the truth" concerning the ending(s) of ME3 and their conclusion has been that this ending is the result of Hallucination/Indoctrination. Now I am not what people would call eloquent in debate but I see several MASSIVE problems with this theory.
First, let's asume that the H/I theories are true. That means that Bioware crafted the ending in such a way that the vast majority of their audience didn't get it. Just like a joke, if you have to explain it, it's not good storytelling. Bioware has set the bar as far as I am concerned in story crafting and sucking people in emotionally. We have witnessed an epic tale that (in my opinion) puts the Star Wars franchise to shame in terms of scope, character development, and audience immersion. To have such a widely misunderstood ending (again, assuming H/I is true) means something was done incorrectly. The ending to a game with this kind of story is, if anything, more important than the rest of the story since it is the ending that hits us last. It's what we walk away with and defines how we feel about the series. Very few poeple enjoy an ending that has to be explained to them by their "higher minded" brethren.
Next, let's assume that the theory is false. If this a bunch of hooey, then we are basically left with gaping plot holes that are unacceptable (see my sig). We have to want to believe H/I and stretch what little info we are given at the ending to fit a mold of our own making. It is not the responsibility of the fan base to provide this sort of cover for Bioware. Bioware's story should stand on it's own, and it does not if H/I is in fact BS.
Finally, going back to H/I being "the truth" behind the ending. This means that Bioware released an incomplete game. The "true ending" will have to be pruchased at a later date... and I thought people were mad at day one DLC! If EA and Bioware are truly planning this type of release, then we are looking at a scary situation where games now cost retail price plus DLC costs in order to get the "full" game. This was already partially done with LotSB and Arrival, both very important story elements that cause you to miss out on lore and events if you don't buy them. There is a difference between making DLC impactful and relevant (like LotSB and Arrival) and leaving out a portion of your game. This appears to be a new step in that direction.
Bioware made an amazing game/franchise that I will gladly sink more money into. Heck, I bought the CE, strategy guide, a hat, a shirt, and tote bag because of how much I loved this game and wanted to support it. I love 99% of this game with a passion and would gladly nominate it for "best game I have ever played," if it wasn't for the craptacular ending. Please BIoware, stay true to the soul of Mass Effect. Let our choices matter.
Hallucination? Really?
