Agreed. The end was a slap in the face. Players were filtered down into a narrow path that took them away from everything they know and love about the series

If your professor likened it to the ending of The Sopranos, it really wasn't that scathing an attack. Many people see the brilliance of the way that programme ended, and is still talked about.

No, I likened it to that. What he said would probably get me banned...

for all we know, he doesn't have to study science fiction IN ENGLISH. stop being nitpicky, the things he wrote are solid.

Totally nailed. Have you ever considered to start a study on the Mass Effect ending phenomena? I think it's really a good topic for literature research.

Or better yet somthing they should teach in videogame design in the future.

Torch it and run is an interesting point. I havent thought of it, but it makes a lot of sense. I bet either Drew did this before he quit, or Casey did and he is moving to a different project/company/job. Maybe it is someone else, but the point still stands.

Nicely stated. You have certainly raised some insight I could never have thought of.

Your topic misuses singular and plural words, Mr. Literature Major.

You missed the point of the post there, Officer grammar.

Rob just wanted to drop in and say I'm a UCSD alum as well although I studied History/Film and graduated a good while back.

And great read. I don't think I would have had the courage to approach a professor about ME or anything game related in general. Im glad you did and was surprised/glad to hear they were actually supportive of it.

Good, solid read. Where is your "torch" quote from?

It's around the net, haha. But I lifted it from the stacks at UCSD while doing homework, you can find a good translation anywhere on the wed though! Just search "tourch the series and run."

Indeed. Up until the very end I thought Mass Effect was the pinnacle of interactive storytelling.

I see. Still, putting the ME3 ending in the same category as that of The Sopranos is a great compliment, whether you personally enjoyed either or not. It is one of the most polarising moments in television, and i'm pretty sure you don't create such instances with bad writing.

Who cares about a few typos. Being a grammar **** doesn't help and he can certainly correct them. I spotted a few typos myself, but that doesn't take away from his knowledge and the clear statement he's trying to convey.

And whether you believe he's a Major or not doesn't matter, his points are valid and what he mentions happens to be - whether through his own merit or research and help - true.

Not that I doubt you OP, good read, interesting points and awesome insights. Strange format though, but I liked it nonetheless.

If I had the power to make this permanently at the top, I would do so in a heartbeat.

Everything this guy said makes so much sense and he's a talent. I hope bioware or esp the writer reads this.

Well said. You've basically covered the ending's major problems that I saw as destroying the franchise.

That was very well written. It offered perspectives that we, not being Literature Majors, lack.

If this had been in any other form of media it would have been
declared a travesty and a massive disaster akin to the Star Wars prequels or
the end of the Sopranos. Bioware accomplished in FIVE minutes what took Lucas
three films to do, destroy an entire franchise to its literal foundation.

This statement is absolutely ridiculous.  What the Star Wars prequels did is add additional layers of depth and explanatory power to the original trilogy.  The ending of Mass Effect did the exact opposite, by leaving more questions than answers.  Hatred towards the prequels is completely unjustified.  The only reason people do not like them is because they "ruin" what people mistakenly think Star Wars is supposed to be, rather than what it actually is.  I know this is a bit off topic, but as a Star Wars fan, this type of slander incenses me.  To compare the prequels to the horrific ending of Mass Effect is disingenuous.
