This may seem stupid, but how does one know what their Readiness Rating is prior to the last mission? My Shep died, Anderson died, shoot almost everyone died, so am thinking my Readiness rating was low, but how do I know what it is? I bought the guide and saw where it said it had to be on to get Shep to live but have no idea how to know what mine even was. Also, is it even possible for Shep to live if you play no multiplayer? I loath multiplayer games, so I doubt IF I'd ever play it again to run my Male Shep too, but IF I did, is that the only way to get up to the high Readiness rating for Shep to live?

There is a terminal on the Normandy where you can see everything - EMS, TMS, Galactic Readiness...
edit: It's in the War Room on the CIC level.

hmmm I must be looking at the wrong numbers then or the Guide book is full of BS. One of the options in it says if it is over a certain number and Anderson lives, so will Shep. The numbers I was looking at ( I think it said combined military force?) was over 5000, which according to the guide, Anderson will live and so will Shep. Is that wrong? I am beginning to feel fustrated on almost every level of this game now....sigh....

yep i did with over 5000 and just cannot get Shep to live no matter what i do.
It might that you have to start the earth mission with over 5000.
but untill Bioware say somthing about all this we do not know if the ending is bugged or not.

OK, at least I know what I was looking in the right spot and reading it right. So I guess it is a wait and see if there truly is a way to keep Shep alive at the end....so much for those Turian Human babies...probably would of looked weird anyway, so maybe it is a good thing my female Shep doesn't live after all

OK, I managed to get Anderson alive. Here's what I did: At every conversation with the Illusive Man, I tried to get him to work with me, so that's three times before Earth. Mars, Thessia, and Cerberus Base. Then, once on the Catalyst, you have to continue using the Paragon/Renegade choices as they pop up. Now, you will shoot Anderson, but that doesn't mean he dies in the end. If you successfully manage to pull off convincing him, IM will either shoot himself or put himself in the line of fire to escape Reaper control. At least, that's what I did. But then, my overall readiness was over 7000.

Anderson dies in every play though. Shepard always goes to starbrat alone.
Honestly, EMS has no real effect on the ending. The only difference is the color of Space Magic you get. If you don't mind red, it's fine.
