I'm a straight male, but I find nothing wrong with playing on Multiplayer with gay teammates. Here's a show of my support.

*shows support* :D

I know, I said I wouldn't post again. But I have to... :P

Just reading up a bit.

I think most people go through these forums and see the title and then react to the title. Now, irrelevant of what's actually being said inside, the title should represent this. I know the OP did this intentionally (as he has posted) so the thread would get posts. He succeeded, but at the same time causing reactions he might've expected. It has nothing to do with the content of this thread or about gay people and their rights etc.

The first time I saw this thread, the title told me that gay people are looking for gay people to play with. Why is that? The only thing that differs gay people from straight people is by definition their sexual orientation.

My reaction was "So they want to talk about sex while playing...", disgusting. And it's disgusting to me because I don't think that belongs in a game forum. Irrelevant of its sexual orientation, might as well have said "Any hot chicks liking big ...." or anything else.

After reading the OPs post I got confused because it contained something entirely different than what it first appeared to be. Generally, that's a mistake and a "no no".
My initial reaction to this thread was the reason I even bothered to post in the first place and I think thats the same for most who are criticising it.
After I found out it was a strategic choise I guess it's fine, it's serving its purpose. It doesn't contain what I initially thought when reading the title.

After reading "like minded people" a million times, I thought the thread should have that title. But it wouldn't serve its purpose as people wouldn't read it.

So, it's a strategic choice so people can find it, smart and I like it. It grabs your attention because you don't expect a sexual orientation thread on a gaming forum (as I only expect threads about the game, and groups evolving the difficulties, nothing that would be personal/individual).

It grabbed your attention to get here, so it obviously works. And I can't say I wouldn't have done the same thing.

Here's a bump :)

I don't know in your case, but in mine when i read the title "Any Gay Players Out There?" I thought "really?, do people ask you your sexual preferences when you get into the lobby?"

Because really, post something about this is ...rare.

seriously, I can't image me in a lobby and people kicking me because they know I am heterosexual xDD

Well, one thing to keep in mind though:  Even if this were only gay players looking for gay people, it's a very limited view of homosexuals in general to think the only commonality in their experience is that of sexual attraction to the same sex.  For the thread by a girl looking to play with other females, would you automatically assume they just want to talk about their vaginas and periods?

Well, there are two points here:
One is that the thread appeared to be something different from the title because you had somewhat misguided assumptions from the title of the thread.  I'm hetero and I didn't think that this title would lead to any kind of discussion of sexual acts.
The second point is that there are many threads with much more misleading titles than this one (which, again, I argue isn't misleading whatsoever).  This one seems to have gotten a particularly strong reaction because of a perceived poor title, and I think that's evidence of something more than just wanting to uphold forum thread title decorum.

As a gay girl I deal with harassment because I'm a girl, which they can tell the second I speak. And even though I don't tell them my sexual orientation, I've heard plenty of anti-gay slurs (as well as other slurs, I'm not a fan of any). So yes, I'm down for playing with people who don't care that I'm a woman and who don't constantly sound like racist, sexist, anti-gay, a**holes. Sign me up.

Women wanting to play with woman is different then men wanting to play with men- but only if they are gay. Talking to a woman over the game would undoubtedly lead to you finding out they are a woman. Talking to a gay over the game would only lead you to find out their gay if they outright say it, so they would HAVE to be talking about sex or sexual orientation.

There have been various threads asking for players to group up, not a single poster has asked for only straights, or responded to the thread by bringing up their sexual orientation. No one has cared until this thread, where gays alienate themselves so they can talk about sex. This thread doesn't belong.

No, but if it said lesbians I would, maybe not about those specifically but why look for lesbians if you won't talk about lesbian related things? It has nothing to do with automatical assumptions, it's logic. And I never said they would talk about "sexual acts" but thanks for assuming that. Sex is much more than just the act. What I meant with sex is everything revolving around sex.

If I make a thread with the title "Anyone else like monster trucks?" I would naturally assume monster trucks would be the main portion of the discussion. If it then turned out that I wrote that I like motorcycles, rally cars and cakes specifically smörgåstårta and that's okay too, then that wouldn't have been expected.

To clarify, no I didn't think the thread would contain the discussion, only to find people to have these discussions with.

That was what my initial thought was, it was my logic that came that reasoning. A title normally and should indicate the topic.

Edit: Another clarification as I expect to get nitpicked on every word: By sex I mean gay, the sexual orientation, sex-ual orientation, and everything that comes along with it.

I wish everyone would stop making such a big deal about the title of this thread…

I can’t tell you how many times I see threads with silly names like “Don’t you hate it when…” or “The worst type of players are…”

Those thread titles are ambiguous and often times annoying but they are *intentional* because they GET PEOPLE TO CLICK ON THE THREAD AND READ THE OP.
That’s what I *expected* people would do when they saw my thread.
Unfortunately, a lot of people see the word “gay” and they freak out and go into homophobe/troll mode…

A lot of people forget that the BSN is a SOCIAL NETWORK (it’s in the name, people!)
I created this thread to do a little social networking and make some friends to play Mass Effect with. I don’t know why anyone has a problem with that…
I can play Mass Effect with whomever I choose and if I want to play with certain individuals, I’m entitled to do so. My actions (i.e. creating this thread) don’t affect you in the slightest. I don’t know why so many people get their panties in a bunch when they see this thread… YOU may not understand why gay or gay-friendly people would want to play together, but we have VERY good reasons. I don’t care if you don’t agree with those reasons or the method of going about searching for specific gamers to play with.
It frankly is none of your business.

Rivermann: Just because I’m gay doesn’t mean I’m looking for other gay guys to talk about our “disgusting” sex lives. That’s an offensive assumption to make.
It’s also really annoying because it seems as though homophobes (like Rick Santorum!) spend more time thinking/talking about gay sex than gay people do!
You really should get your mind out of the gutter.

Edit: and I see you're trying to pretend that when you said sex you meant "gay, the sexual orientation, sex-ual orientation" and not sex lives... uh huh. Then why did you compare this thread with a hypothetical thread titled "Any hot chicks liking big ...." < THAT thread is clearly about sex (the act). THIS thread has NOTHING to do with anyone's sex lives. It's just a harmless thread looking for like-minded people to play with.

Thanks for the bump, though ;)

THIS. Even though there seems to be a lot of confusion regarding this thread (and some of that is my fault for not doing a better job of explaining my reasoning for creating this thread and naming it what I did…) kp099 sums it up perfectly: all I wanted to do was find groups of people who could feel safe knowing that when they’d play together, they would be treated with respect and dignity and be able to have fun without worrying whether a random gamer would say ridiculously offensive things. (and yes, I *did* intially have gay people in mind because, as a gaymer, I've been subjugated to homophobic hate speech in several random matches and that made playing the game a LOT less enjoyable.)
Anyway, I look forward to playing with you sometime, kp009! ^_^

(sorry for the double post!)

You read my post? It has nothing to do about the content or gay-friendly people, your rights or anything that this thread actually contains.

There is a difference between ambigous, and I personally thought the title was quite clear. For gay people to play toghether was your reasoning of the title. You didn't change the title after changing the content.

And again, it's not about talking about "disgusting sex lives", you are reading this all wrong that I'm almost offended by it.

Gay = a sexual orientation = sex-ual orientation.
Straight = a sexual orientation = sex-ual orientation.

Specifically asking for either would naturally make me assume sex and everything that goes around it (ie. Not using words that would offend you due to the sexual orientation for example, talking about whatever it has to do with it, like how a person looks) and yes it is disgusting to me, straight or gay. I would do this if this was a straight thread as well. Sex, religion and racism has no place in a video game forum in my opinion, it doesn't make me misguided or think less of anyone.

This is my opinion and I have the right to have one, just like you do. This is how i percieved the title but don't put words in my mouth to make yourself a victim and lash out at me. Why do you even keep reiterating homophobes when you reply to my thread? You're completely missing my point.

This is about THE TITLE. The content I'm fine with, the title, I'm good with now, but you don't seem to understand why people react to the title. It's not about being gay, straight, your rights, etc. It's a video game forum, and your title is misleading. It's a tactic, and it's not ambigous like the examples you refered to, it's intentionally misleading in a non ambigous way.

You have the proof of this, in this thread.

As I said, the other day I watched 3 PUG players in a row on XBL refuse to play a Bronze match with another player because that player had a gamertag name that identified them as gay. As in both readied players unreadied and left when he joined and another player joined and quickly left.

Something is messed up when a gamer with a tag like "LadiezMAn23" would be welcome in all games but one with "GayGam3r97" would have a shocking number of players refuse to even play with them.

Give it a rest, Rivermann!

The title is NOT “intentionally misleading in a non ambiguous way”.
As a gaymer, I am, FIRST AND FOREMOST looking to play with other gay people. Hence the title of this thread.
I clarified that I’m not necessarily JUST looking for gay people in the OP but I wanted to keep the title short and sweet for a reason.
I don’t know why that bothers you since it doesn’t affect you one iota.

You don’t think this thread has a place in a video game forum? FINE. Go complain to the moderators or brush your teeth or do something productive. Stop clogging up my thread with your pedantic posts. The moderators apparently think this thread and its objective IS acceptable, otherwise they wouldn’t have let it go on 19 pages! What the moderators do NOT find acceptable is an off-topic flame war. Let’s just leave it at that because this constant back-and-forth bickering is counterproductive and exhausting.

You make a really good point Goaliebot!
I created this thread so any “GayGam3r97”s out there would have a place they could go where they know they would be welcomed and be able to play Mass Effect without having to worry about discrimination or whether or not they would be treated respectfully :)

If you didn't want everybody tmake a big deal about the title, then why give it a trollbait title?

Utilizing a Shock title (as you have), is much like growing a beard, wearing a turban, boarding a plane, and then standing up and quoting the Quran.

Yes, it will give you attention, but it also taints the attention you recieve with the preconcieved notions that the onlookers have.

In short, if you want to have a civil discourse with most people, walk up and greet them. Dont smack them upside the head with a halibut.

Now, onto the body of the thread.

You word the thread asking if there are any gay players out there, but in the thread you said you dont mind straight allies as long as they dont sling around insults targeting people's choice in relationships (there is probably a shorter word for this, but I've had a brain fart).

So, gays and straights playing a game together cooperatively in which their respective views on sexuality have no bearing on the gameplay... Why the hell didn't you just say you're making a group for openminded, mature, individuals that has a strict policy on slander? It would get the same thing done, and with less controversy.

Touché!
You’re right, the title *is* an attention-grabber and not all of the attention is positive…
I realized that this thread would probably be trolled regardless of what I titled it, though.
As I’ve said in the past, I don’t mind trolls because they bump this thread, which prevents it from getting buried under the deluge of threads complaining about vanguards…

And the title “Any open-minded, mature individuals wanting to play in a group with a strict policy on slander” is absurd. As I’ve explained, I was initially interested in finding fellow gaymers to connect with and, since this is a SOCIAL NETWORK, I am allowed and even encouraged to do so. I wanted to make some friends and I did! You may not agree with how I went about doing it, but it doesn’t matter to me because I’m going to go play Mass Effect with some of the cool people I met thanks SOLELY to this thread :P

Missing the point, again

I'm fine with the thread and title, you mentioned you are sick about people commentating it, I tell you why.

Because: You are using a misleading title. The title could've been anything, as long as the content doesn't match the topic, irrelevant of match making or being gay or if it's about rocketships to mars: it is misleading for many as you can see by the posts in this thread. Don't argue that it's correct, you can see the posts can't you?

The topic can be interpreted a million ways and I have mine and I can see you don't understand it so I won't bother with it anymore.

Irrelevant of anyones sexual orientation, race, religion, weight, color of your eyes etc. The lack and refusal of understanding is great here. So is the need to misinterpret things, twist words and make assumptions.

I can't get through and neither can anyone else it seems. I'm at least trying to help people understand why people are reacting this way, but it keeps boiling down to homophobia which I find is genuinely sad. It's not the reason.

The only people who seem to have an issue with either the title or this thread in general are people that A) never intended to play with any of us in the first place (as evidenced by the fact that they just come here to clog up the thread with their b****y, off-topic posts and don’t want their name added to the list) or B) we wouldn’t want to play with anyways because they are close-minded and/or annoying and intent on derailing this thread.

You’ll notice that I changed the title of this thread so you and others like you would cut it out with your irritating, off-topic posts. Now I’d really appreciate it if you just left this thread alone, thanks! ^_^

What's your gamertag or origin ID, though?

The list has compiled quite nicely. Now I know who I am supposed to accept and tolerate. ...At least until they come out with a cure.

By the way, I forgot to add my id to the list. PS3: HiruRyu Part of the LGBT community! Just not gay persay...Or bi...Or lesbian...Gaspeh!

I'm guess that by the 19 pages you've either found some, or there's a fight of some sort going on.

No worries, RigolettoHixar! We can work with that :) And what better way to practice your English than to play with some patient and respectful individuals? =)
What's your gamertag or origin ID, though?

Sorry i forgot to include that... XyrhoCruz_HK

About 20% fighting

20% supporting

10% actual posts of people offering their tags

50% trolling.

Am I off?

So, gays and straights playing a game together cooperatively in which their respective views on sexuality have no bearing on the gameplay... Why the hell didn't you just say you're making a group for openminded, mature, individuals that has a strict policy on slander? It would get the same thing done, and with less controversy.

Controversy wouldn't exist if people who don't like the thread didn't feel an inexplicabale need to post their opinions in the thread they dislike, and had simply avoided it like mature people. This being the internet you're going to get Trolls no matter what you do (in a thread like you suggest you likely would have gotten a bunch of people coming in and complainging that the OP was a tea-totaler or thin skinned), but it's still worth considering. Plenty of people came in here, posted their ID and like for the thread topic and left it at that, only a chocie few felt the need to start arguments.
