Well I don't usually play with the mic so it hasn't been a problem for me but I could probably use more friends in ME3 reguardless..:3

It’s always more fun to play with a group of friends than a group of randoms!
I added your name to the list! ^_^
Go kick some Reaper butt! :P

The list has compiled quite nicely. Now I know who I am supposed to accept and tolerate. ...At least until they come out with a cure. By the way, I forgot to add my id to the list. PS3: HiruRyu Part of the LGBT community! Just not gay persay...Or bi...Or lesbian...Gaspeh!

We’re welcoming of ANYONE that considers themselves to be a member of the LGBTQIA community (that includes just about everyone (including straight allies!), especially if we add on all of the other letters like P and O…!) ^_^

Am I off?

MsLub: Haha no, thankfully there hasn’t been any real fights in this thread… just silly and/or petty disagreements! And yeah we’ve found a LOT of players (check the growing list in the OP!)

Chamroeun: I disagree with your percentages! At LEAST 50% of the posts have been me defending/bumping the thread :P

I do have a mic. But I tend to not talk (well, apart from that occasional little snigger everytime I hear that unmistakable Banshee scream).

Cheerio folks :)

No, but if it said lesbians I would, maybe not about those specifically but why look for lesbians if you won't talk about lesbian related things?

Well, exactly.  You have a double standard.  Women could talk about a variety of things, but there's only one thing, apparently, that homosexuals could POSSIBLY have to talk about.

Going back to what you originally wrote:

Rivermann wrote...
The only thing that differs gay people from straight people is by definition their sexual orientation.

Well, by definition, there's only a chromosomal difference between men (XY) and women(XX).  So, let me ask you, when you saw that the female-centric thread included more than discussions of breasts, periods, and double X chromosomes, were you enraged?  Of course not.  Because you realize that, aside from the "definitional" difference, the experience of being a woman is vastly different than that of being a man, and informs their perspective on a variety of issues.  Them being the minority in gaming ALSO affects their relationship with the community at large.  A woman's experience playing with men is different than my experience playing with this community because I am the majority: I don't have to deal with other gamers making sexist remarks either toward me or offhandedly, because most other gamers are statistically fairly similar in background to me.

This is the EXACT same thing for homosexuals.  To say: "The only difference between my life and a gay man's life is that I like women and he likes dudes," seems so willfully ignorant of reality that I'm having a hard time keeping my patience with this conversation.

Rivermann wrote...
That was what my initial thought was, it was my logic that came that reasoning. A title normally and should indicate the topic.

My point is that you come to your "logical" end point by way of a fairly misguided preconcieved notion.

Rivermann wrote...
Edit: Another clarification as I expect to get nitpicked on every word: By sex I mean gay, the sexual orientation, sex-ual orientation, and everything that comes along with it.

Everything that comes along with it is a pretty big catch-all.  If you really viewed the topic so broadly, I really don't understand your issues with the thread whatsoever.

RedJohn wrote...
I don't know in your case, but in mine when i read the title "Any Gay Players Out There?" I thought "really?, do people ask you your sexual preferences when you get into the lobby?"
Because really, post something about this is ...rare.

For future reference to everyone in this thread, this question has already been addressed multiple times.  If you seriously wonder about this, why not read the thread to see if perhaps your question has been answered?

As a refresher:

mangrilla wrote...
It's not random players KNOWING the orientation, it's them tossing out slurs that make a person of that orientation uncomfortable.
Imagine if instead of saying "That's gay" or calling others ****gots, players used the n-word constantly.  "THAT N-WORD BANSHEE JUST KILLED ME!"  "That vanguard n-word just keeps getting his stupid n-word ass killed!"
Random players would have no idea if they were playing with a black person or not, but that black person would still have every right to feel pretty uncomfortable about it.  This isn't about "wearing it on your sleeve" or whatever.  It's about people being able to to just play a game and have fun without hearing people slur who you are constantly.

This is a huge point that everyone here really needs to get through their heads:  The OP is NOT the one making homosexuality an issue.  The random, inconsiderate, biggoted online community that uses homophobic language with complete strangers ARE THE ONES WHO MAKE HOMOSEXUALITY AN ISSUE.  If not for people yelling "****got" whenever someone doesn't get to the checkpoint in time, or whatever, this thread would most likely not exist.

Rivermann wrote...
Sex, religion and racism has no place in a video game forum in my opinion, it doesn't make me misguided or think less of anyone.

So you would have similar objections to a Christian looking for other like-minded people to play a game with?  As I said earlier, if you can say with a straight face that you would object a thread titled "Any Christian Gamers out there?" in the same way that you've acted here...  I still don't understand you, but at least you're consistent.  Having said that, I doubt that's the case for at least the majority of dissenters here.

Squirrelwiz wrote...
Utilizing a Shock title (as you have), is much like growing a beard, wearing a turban, boarding a plane, and then standing up and quoting the Quran.

 W.O.W.  So Muslims can't get on planes now.  What is shocking about asking if any gay people play this game?  Seriously?  There's a term for what you're doing here, and it's called "Blaming the Victim."  Where does that stop for you?  "Surely, those rednecks wouldn't have killed that gay man if only he had kept his homosexuality a deep dark secret!"  OP isn't doing anything wrong

Squirrelwiz wrote...
So, gays and straights playing a game together cooperatively in which their respective views on sexuality have no bearing on the gameplay... Why the hell didn't you just say you're making a group for openminded, mature, individuals that has a strict policy on slander? It would get the same thing done, and with less controversy.

Again, because I'm sure you enforce such strict Thread Title rules for every single thread.  Surely, you apply no double standard just because this post happens to be by a homosexual.

On a tangent, anyone else find it curious that some folks people playing co-op Mass Effect can't put aside their small-mindedness? There's the whole metaphor of Batarians/Geth/Asari/Turians/Krogan/etc. all putting aside their differences and working together as equals to fight an INTERGALACTIC WAR fer goodness' sake, and yet us flawed humans can't do the same to play a video game...

Thanks Mangrilla! I really appreciate your tireless defense of this thread. Honestly, I don’t know what the gay community would do without our awesome straight allies! ^_^

However, we’re fighting a losing battle. For starters, we’re arguing *on the Internet*. That almost never ends well… :P And another thing, we’re arguing about homosexuality on a gaming forum, which isn’t really the appropriate place for it… So I think in the future we should just ignore any offensive or off-topic posts, as frustrating as that can be, and try our best to stay on topic! You made some REALLY good points, though, and I hope any would-be trolls left on the BSN will read your post and think twice before trolling… ;)

And you make a GREAT point! If Quarians can work with the Geth to fight the Reapers in an MP match, you’d think we fellow humans could also get along in an MP match…! :P

My apologies.  You are right about not feeding the trolls, but duty calls.

In that regard, I have a question that's gaming related though only tangetially related to this thread:  I got your invite to play last night, but was in the middle of a game.  I have only played PUGs so far, so I'm not really sure how to handle the friend requests to play a game when I'm in the midst of one.  Obviously, I just can't accept and leave my squad out to dry, but I assume that by the time I'm done with my round, you'll have understandably moved onto your own game.  Is the only way to really play with friends, then, to force one person to wait around until the other one is done their previous game?

Mangrilla did you even read my post for comprehension? Or did you just latch onto those two specific quotes and shift into defensive mode?

The problem was that the thread's title does grab attention, but it is going to attract some of the bad elements of the forums, hindering the thread more than helping it. It isn't a case of hiding the homosexuality, as it is about how you present it to the world.

My second point was based on the substance of the OP's post, in that he was welcoming straight people to join them in their games (there is nothing wrong with this). My point was if you have both straights and gays in the same group (not the same squad, but the over-all group) then why not try to appeal to the more mature and open minded crowd instead of explicitly homosexuals.

Just... wow!

This thread is officially 1 month old. In this time, it managed to get 486+ replies, 92 of which are from users who added their name to the list of gay/gay friendly players.

So... If my math is correct, roughly 80% of replies are either insults, blames, useless comments, justifications or jokes of varying quality.

I wonder what that says about this community. 92 civilized people is pretty good. 80% unneeded bull**** is a bit disheartening... and more than proof to me that OP was right from the very beginning!!!

In any case, here,s my 360 gamertag:

BAHAHAHA that GIF was HILARIOUS!!! :D

And I don’t know if I’m really the person to ask MP gaming-related questions (Mass Effect is the first online multiplayer game I’ve *ever* played…) I mean, I don’t even know what “PUG” stands for! :P

But here’s what normally happens (in my limited experience): thanks to this thread, I have quite a decent-sized friends list on Xbox Live. There’s almost always at *least* one person that’s online and playing Mass Effect. Usually I’ll invite them to a party to see what’s up. If they’re in the middle of a match or close to the end, I’ll wait for them (I might change the color of my character’s armor or something silly :P) if they aren’t, maybe I’ll switch over to the single player until they’re ready (or read or get a snack or something). It’s always more fun playing with a friend, so I don’t mind waiting around a bit. Sometimes you can join a friend’s game if they’re in the middle of it and there’s an open spot! Or you can coordinate with your friends and work out a time when you can all get on and play together (send a message being like “I’m available from ___ to ___. You?) Or you can just quit the match you’re playing and play with your friends (I’m guilty of doing that :P) It’s not like the randoms will know! You could have had a legitimate disconnect!
I hope that answers your question…!

I knew all along it would be naïve to hope that most of the posts would be people just adding their name to the list… but the trolls serve a purpose: they bump this thread and give it more exposure. As long as AT LEAST one person adds their name per page of this thread, I’ll be happy and consider it a success. I mean, we almost have *100 people* who like the ideas behind this thread and want to play together… that’s pretty awesome if you ask me!

You realize that you're annoyed with me pointing out a particularly inflammatory remark you made while missing the context of the rest of your statement.  Perhaps I did.  But is that not the exact same thing you're complaining about with this title (aside from the fact that asking if gay people play a video game is FAR different from insinuating that Muslims should be careful about how open they are with their religion, especially on airplanes)?

SquirrelWiz wrote...

You are, in essence, saying that "You should change your perfectly acceptable behavior because other people are intolerant."  I disagree with that notion.  Changing one's behavior to accommodate intolerance doesn't seem to do anything but validate and continue that ignorance.

I assume you're not gay.  I am also straight.  Yet we both clicked on this link to see what it was about and, upon reading the OP, immediately recognized that we were included in the message.  At no point was I offended, and additionally, I can't understand how any LGBT or ally person would be.  This criticism, that the title just isn't PERFECT, seems to be a prevalent concern in this thread and this thread alone.  I'm pointing out that these criticisms are just another double-standard applied to gay gamers in the community, and wondering why this thread is so in need of specificity while slews of other similar threads are not?

Yes... we should be asking ME3MP players in the Dragon age II gameplay (spoilers allowed) forum.
