I both agree and disagree with your post.  At some point the LGBTQIA community will need to cease to exist.  At some point we need to have "The Brotherhood of Man" (or the "Personhood of People").  The problem is that hate groups force people to cling to each other for solidarity.  So long as hate groups continue, this community will continue to lean on each other for support, and rightly so.

I'd like to report this post for being awesome.

I don't play much MP for ME these days, but my uncle is gay and so is my brother, and I'd happily play with people who don't think that's a problem.

I read the thread OP and did not see anything that would adequatley answer my question. I have played at least hundreds of games and quite frankly I've never heard anyone use either the G or N word (unless we're talking the "new player" word and not the one I'm thinking of). Therefore I find the premise of the thread weird despite the "explanation" in the OP and asked the question...

But ok, I'll drop it.

The point is the same, however. Wanting to play with people who understand that certain terms are hurtful and cause negative sentiment is not segregationist, nor do I see any problem with it.

The 'why' of the thread was made quite clear. To continue to question it means either you didn't read it (which you claim you did) or you don't believe it/agree with it. To someone who has been harassed because of their sexual orientation, either of those reasons would be aggravating.

The reason that you don't see your question addressed in the OP is because that question, and the answer to it, have no relevance in the context of this thread and its stated goals.

If people want to discuss their social life in a match, they can.  If they don't, they can choose not to.
However neither matters in the context of this thread.

It is though.

The fear of crime is most always higher than the instances of actual crime.

In this case, the fear of being abused based on sexual orientation, despite instances being few and far between, causing homosexual players to seek out another community within the community - related to say the increasing prevelance of Gated Communities in inner cities, where the people within are seeking a homogeneous population within of perceived like-mindedness, status, finacial level or racial or other ethnic bacgrounds, based on fear of rising crime rates in the outside world (even though in a lot of cases crime rates are actually decreasing).

Like with Gated Communities, these people are basically segregating themselves from the wider multiplayer community based on the actions of a few. With the very existance of this walled-off community, they are perpetuating the "need" for it to exist in the first place based on high levels of homophobia.

Lets also look at the evidence involved in the supposed high instances of homophobia. What of the wording of the "insults"?. The meaning of words change, many times, now, when people say "That's gay" they are not insinuating that it is in any way, shape, or form to do with homosexuality. They are insinuating that it is "bad" or "stupid", in the same way that decades ago "gay" did not mean "homosexual", but meant "happy" and "queer" meant "unusual" or "strange". Homosexual people need to realise that the meaning is actually in the midst of a literary change as we speak, and it is probable that the meaning will even change again in a few decades time, so will the people still cling to one meaning despite its constant changing?


What I'd like to know is what are the levels of claimed homophobic attitudes (where the players are doing nothing but make assumptions about the meaning of what the other person said - remember, context is everything), vs the instances of actual directed homophobic abuse whereby the other people are specifically inferring some kind of hatred of threats against a person based on their sexual orientation.

Given the very nature of the OP, it is likely the former, and not the latter is the case, thus bringing it all back to the fear of crime being more common than the instances of crime, leading them to segregate themselves from the wider community based on this fear, and not actual instances of homophobia.
