Wow. It must be nice to be so blissfully ignorant. Seriously, I sure would like to see life through your rose colored glasses...
Your "perceived mental construct" is responsible for gay slurs, innumerable bashings and various hate crimes and a rampant LGBT teen suicide rate AND homelessness rate (from being kicked out just because they're gay).
So don't tell me there isn't a difference. Until you've walked a mile in our shoes, I'd appreciate it if you kept your pseudo philosophical nonsense to yourself.

Yeah... I thought about bringing this up before but initially decided against it.

Whatever you may think this is still a thing that happens.  :(

Do people seriously not get why it makes more sense for minorities to band together than the majority?

In a game? Sexual orientation cannot be determined over voice chat.

I mean the whole minorities banding together thing actualy reveals the reality of equality through its illusion. The fact minorities need to band together to feel safe/comfortable/whatever only shows that the whole equality thing isn't working.

Wanna know the difference between common rabble and minority? There is none. They're both ****** Sapiens. Any perceived difference is a mental construct.

Also, would you keep that stance if you saw your first girl at the age of 16-18 or so? You had seen them on the internet, and maybe your teacher was female; but no girl to socialize with or touch. Would you not feel like a minority? Would perhaps the mental construct be more real to you that way?

My point of view is that anyone who singles out people for some ridiculous reason is being a douche. I don't see a difference between ant member of this race unless it's a literal tangible difference. Personality traits (sexuality included) and skin color are not actual differences, they are things that the low brow and ignorant cling to to use as weapons.

Is the world perfect? No. But my philosophy is closer to the truth than any fiction. And it's open and accepting. There shouldn't be any reason for minorities to have to stick together, the fact that there is any reason at all is a reason for people to break down those walls.

Anyone who isn't focused on breaking down stereotypes and bigotry fist and foremost (and thereby helping to bring any and all communities together as a single whole and not fractious groups) is working against the betterment of society.

That is a fact.

If we want people to stop being ignorant we have to work to fix it. Not wall each other off.

I understand the OP looking for people whgo aren't homophobes or otherwise offensive.  That's understandable, I've been on the outside looking in, but it's more productive to seek a wider audience of understanding than to go the opposite way and narrow your fields.

Edit: On XBox I am up for any sort of premade and I only talk sociology on the forums. Lost my mic though shich is why I never actualy bothered to say anything about ctually playing.

After reading these responses it's clear why a thread like this is needed

More power to you. That said, if I hear/see another white heterosexual male talk about some other group being sexist I might just slip into a coma.

Gotta also love how every post is pre-faced "I'm Hetero" or "As a heterosexual"

Glad to see so many Mass Effect 3 fans are secure in their sexuality. Relax guys, it's going to be okay

Not gay but have known many RL and online.
Don't use the term gay unless describing sexual preference.
So if a team that wants to feel relaxed needs a straight wheel to fill a hole in the team I'm comfortable... Yes that has a double entendre in it.

Scumbag gamers:

Complain that gay player wanting to start his own team is sexist and separatist.

Proceed to make gay jokes.

I don't make gay jokes, I just try to joke with gay guys. Half I've known I've respected as some real hard core gamers.
Had serious issues and were open to rowing and joking on any of those issue.

Well my whole point was if you're gonna get people together you might as well try to clean the community up in the process.

I'll let him relax though.

I'm not sure why you'd want this, why isolate yourself.
We're all human beings here. *I think*,

what does it matter if people are gay, straight, bisexual.
I play with Men and Women from multiple countries and some of them I know are gay, I don't care. that doesn't have any effect on how I see them or how it affects the game.

Let's refrain from name calling.

I'm not a "douche" just cause I'm looking to play a game of Mass Effect with likeminded individuals.

You'll notice that the people causing problems and being belligerent in this thread are NOT gay people. Now maybe you can see why I'd rather play with gaymers (or any member of the LGBTQIA community (including straight allies!)) rather than annoying and ignorant straight people who preach from a high horse and don't know what it's like to be a member of an oppressed minority.

And thanks, Kakaw and FataliTensei for backing me up.
Let's all stop arguing and just play some Mass Effect...! =D
(Although if you really want to keep arguing, you can PM me. The forums aren't really a place for a sociological debate, but I'm always up for one ^_^)

For some who don't understand.
The reason a group like this is good, is because you can be sure that you aren't going to be hearing slurs, bashing and such in a group like this.
I'm not gay myself, but I have plenty of friends who are, and it can sure get tiring to hear people saying, slurs and such online.
It seems to be worse on Xbox live though, never ran into it once on the PC.

This might sound ridiculous, but here are my honest thoughts: every time I rush into the fray to revive a fallen player, I wonder "what if this person is a homophobe who says or does hurtful things to gay people...?"
I know that's silly cause they could be a horrible person in other ways and not even be homophobic, but, as a victim of gay bashing, I have absolutely no tolerance for homophobes; in the game, I'd rather just let them die. Even if it means we lose. It's not about just winning for me. I don't associate with homophobes in real life AT ALL and I'd rather not do it online, either.
So I created this thread because I don't want to have to ask myself if it was worth it to save my random teammates: if I know they are straight allies or members of the LGBT community, I'd gladly give up my virtual life trying to save them.
Like I said, playing with likeminded individuals will strengthen unit cohesion, in my opinion, and make me play my absolute best. It's just a personal preference. I'm not isolating myself from anyone, so long as they are willing to see me as a human being entitled to basic civil rights.
Hope that explains my reasoning ^_^

(and sorry for the double post... I can't seem to edit on an iPad :/)

That's because no-one uses mics on PC! :P

Usually the ones that do are a party using Ventrilo or whathaveyou.

So apparently none of the people in this thread were around during the beta/demo. We had this same exact thread and flame wars and entire flame threads about this, as well as a BioWare employee getting into trouble for defending the gay thread.

I just started playing ME multiplayer this week, so I never was around this section of the forum... Sorry for opening up a can of worms. :\\ Hopefully we can keep it civil. I've already found some people to play with, so I consider that a success if the mods feel like locking this...
