I've been playing since release (on PC) and I have not heard a single homophobic slur. Is it really that common on consoles or are they exaggerating?

exaggerating, big time. On the Ps3 hardly anyone uses a mic, and when they do, it's not to yell homofobic stuff. Also (serious question), how do guys know you are gay anyway?

Spend a day in the XBox 360 community and then come back and tell us who's exaggerating.  ME3 is a lot better than COD or Halo, but there's definitely a reason why someone would want to make a community like this.

As someone who has put in nearly 500 hours playing ME3 with randoms (Xbox 360), I can say that it's not uncommon at all to hear racial/homophobic stuff during a match.

It is note-worthy to add that kids today use those terms as insults and dont intend their actually meaning much like every curse word out there. When someone says Son-of-a-B!tch they dont actually mean that yur mother is bad, it just means "Words that are mean" in people's heads

Of course. But that doesn't discount the fact that whoever created this thread got tired or didn't want to hear these terms being used like that.
I've used the term, "Gay" to desribe Hunters/situations a few times when I really mean stupid. Some people might be offended by that.

I had a guy saying, "Stupid N****er" everytime a Prime stunned his Krogan. I'm sure he wasn't trying to describe the Prime as that word. I wasn't offended at all. But others might have been and wanted to not hear the term being used like that.
Same with people who say, "F***** f*****." sometimes when they go down. They aren't trying to describe the enemy that took them down as being homosexual. They're just venting their frustration with words.

...so? This might or might not be the place for this debate, but words have power--regardless of the intentions of the user. I agree with you that a lot of people online--usually kids--use slurs as
freely interchangeable tokens denoting "words that are mean". But what
they mean by those words and what they communicate are different.

The words people choose can indicate a lot about their perceptions and values. When someone decides to use a homophobic or racial slur, it might mean "words that are mean" in his or her head, but it also means that person perceives black, Hispanic, gay, or whatever to be synonymous with "things that are worth less", or "things that are insulting to be".

It may not be quite the same thing as conscious bigotry, but it remains full of ignorance and hate.

Whatever, that Prime was totally African American.

But yeah.  Words only have power over you if you let then, etc etc.

Agreed.  This was a point that some of my friends in high school were never able to grasp.  On the one hand, they realized that using those words in that way wasn't nice to do right in front of me (one friend would look at me and say "no offense" after every time), but on the other hand, they just kept doing it.

The "homophobic and racial" slurs annoy me to no end. Why on Earth would you be playing a game that causes you to feel such rage? Why is that you feel the only way to properly express yourself about such frustration is with complete hate speech? It's juvenile, it's careless, and it says a lot about a person. You need to extend your vocabulary in order to exclude statements that make you sound like an ignorant apathetic idiot. There's no reason for it, ever! Someone who continuously does that will find themselves in a lobby without my talents. It's especially disconcerting when I come across one our "high-pitched" members (to read under 12) who are paired in a room with someone who's doing it, and they in turn "think it's cool" so they follow suit. It's like a sociological experiment gone wrong.

I mean, everybody swears... I swear "in game" but I'm still respectful to people. It's the same thought that breeds "greed" over always having the top score. It's the same sort of business that causes people to either "be a team player" or to just simply "be in it for themselves." I have found that generally the worse the hate speech is, the less of a team player they will be. There's no fun or reward in playing with someone who's just in it for themselves... they should just do solo runs if that's how they want to play.

I also thank people if/when they pick me up, I say "nice shot" when it's warranted by their play and i wish more people did that. I don't add negative people, and if someone proves themselves to be that way once they're added then they're removed.Grow up, learn to deal with your emotions, and stop throwing your blind hate onto others... and then we really can "Save Earth!"

Exactly, if only more people were like that multiplayer would be such a nice experience. When I used to use xbox every other match had someone who would constantly use a slur.

Since moving to the PC I have not had any experience with the online, though people seem to say the people are generally friendlier.

This 1000x!
I always try to thank people when they revive me and if I do something stupid and die because of it, I usually apologize and promise I won't do it again.
It makes the game more fun when people talk at least a little. Then you remember that you're playing a co-op game with actual people and not just bots!
And yeah, I've been known to curse on occasion. Like if a Phantom comes out of nowhere and instakills me, I can't help but say "damn it!" or something like that.
But slurs directed at other plays or the use of hate speech in game is, in my opinion, never acceptable!

...I wouldn't, I'd just start hitting on the slayer (who I still haven't unlocked :crying:)

Got the Demolisher over the weekend, but haven't brought her to a serious game yet (i.e. above the one bronze game I played to check her out).  My goal for tonight is to respec my Shadow a little bit and run her through a few gold games to see what the difference is, and then try her in platinum maybe.

You're truly awesome. :D

Also, to the people who spout the tired and condescending "words only have power if you let them" thing really need to quit emotionally policing people because it only makes you look privileged and disrespectful. People have lived and experienced different events in their lives so something that you consider minor such as a word can operate as a trigger for something much bigger for someone else.

Once the cro-magnons realize that they will feel more clever, witty, and be taken more seriously without resorting to arrogant hate speech... a better world it will be. It's an attention thing for a lot of them, and the subsequent drama that ensues. Some people are just like that. Now, while I can sympathize with the people who preach the need for more tolerance... I don't want someone spewing their hate at me (because that does affect me)... end of story. If someone is throwing down hate speech while I'm attempting to enjoy a video game... well, even Ghandi would move to another lobby. Sometimes it's a cultural thing... if they don't seem all that bad but they're constantly using one term in paticular (such as the negative "gay" remark) a bit of education may be required in the form of using words to express how, what they're saying, is affecting you... thus increasing the overall level of awareness. If nothing changes, find a different room and go about your day. You just did your bit for king and country... and piece of mind.

The key here, in fact, is raising awareness and sensitivity... which requires people to empathize with one another. I have tolerance for the fact that I know I won't find people who think this way everyday (even every other day) but I also know that at some point I'll find someone in a lobby or a game who's been looking to find someone respectful but fun to play with... someone who enhances the fun of a game with their imagination instead of their slander. That's the person I know I'm looking forward to playing with...

I have a mic but I prefer not to use it because it's really, really bad.

I think that the people who are saying "sexual preference shouldn't matter in gaming so why is a thread like this needed" are somewhat missing the point. My sexual preference is not going to be obvious to someone I'm gaming with, it's not like I discuss it with everyone, but if that person uses homophobic or racist slurs then I have no interest in playing with them. It's good if I can actually know that the people I'm playing with aren't going to behave in that way. If I can help it, I want to avoid people who use words like "gay" in a negative way, because it does upset me.

I'll play with anyone, gay, straight, bi, trans*, asexual, as long as they're polite and respectful. My experience with playing on PC has been great so far, but I'd love to meet even more people that I can enjoy playing with :)

I think "Oh that's bullsh**!" tops the list followed by "What the fu**!"
