Imperator Prime on xbl, got a mic.
For all the people saying "what's the use of a thread like this," seemingly oblivious to online homophobia, here's a really basic explanation. Whether we use it or not, whether we limit ourselves to it or not, some of us appreciate a "safe list" of people we can play online with so that if we get talking about our offline lives over the mic (as plenty of people do) we don't have to put up with childish ****s yelling "****" if we mention, for example, our significant other.
It's not so much about "shared interests"-- just because I'm gay doesn't mean that I want to chat with other gay guys about stereotypically 'gay interests' crap like interior design and fashion-- it's about making your experience online more agreeable by selecting a peer group (which
is everyone's prerogative) that you can reasonably expect not to treat you like bigoted jagoffs. And while I haven't run into a lot of those, I have PUGed with some in the past. I'd like to hedge my bets against getting them again.
Frankly I think it would be much
better to have a "name & shame the racist/sexist/homophobic douchebags" thread where, instead of treating the agreeable people as the exception, we published a list of the
disagreeable people we encounter online so that anyone who wants to avoid them can... what? Does xbox or any of the other systems support "ignore lists" and PUG exclusion of the people on them? If not, then maybe this kind of "looking for X" thread is the best we can do.
But the point remains, if you're in the privileged position of never having felt discriminated against or slandered online-- not for how you play but for
who you are-- then you aren't fit to judge the selective grouping behaviour of people who aren't. There are in fact plenty of ignorant, hateful idiots online and nobody who prefers to avoid them owes anyone else an explanation or an apology. If you aren't one of those unpleasant people then by all means, join the "in group," but don't make excuses for them or pretend that they aren't out there, because it's unjust to everyone who's encountered them and had a lousy time of it.
