hate people who call people names because they make a mistake in a video game.
Hate people who are narrowminded.
Hate people who abuse sexual preferences, skin color, or illnesses in their speech.

And this thread rears its fabulous head again. Still don't see the point in making a gay player recruitment thread when you could just start/join a completely-neutral-on-the-subject recruitment thread.
Completely agree. This thread was totally unnecessary, the op and sympathisers could have just played online like any other online players.
Seems to me like Gay players have to be the centre of attention.
I am heterosexual but feel no need to create a " I am Heterosexual please play with me thread".

Did you even read the OP? If not, there are another few hundred posts to say why gay players/gay-friendly players would've liked this thread. I, for one, don't enjoy hearing the word "f*g" when I'm trying to enjoy a game that I bought with my money. Why should I be forced to play with people I don't care for when there is an easily accessable thread to find like-minded people to play with me? So please, don't state your opinion as a fact because that fact is something I like to call "wrong".WilliamYZFR1 wrote...

its for everybody, if the gay community wants to be seperate then that fine. its about the comfort zone for heterosexual and homosexual. if you dont mind having a gay gentlemen or lady in your game then all is fine but there is still ignorance out there and that can make a person uncomfortable and make the game not fun to play.WilliamYZFR1 wrote...

so why not start a "recruitment" thread thats friendly, that everybodys comfortable with or can relate to, you make more friends that way. if you dont like it then dont post here because if you have something that isnt constructive then you dont belong here.

Only thing that annoys the crap out of me is when people (Not saying minorities, because we're all PEOPLE.) demand that they be protected by law, blah blah, but at the same time to be treated equally. There's a middle ground. I've ran into very many militant gays, and just as many militant homophobes.
Sometimes it takes legal protection to create "equal treatment." This isn't that complicated an idea. If the majority of people in society treat a demographic group unjustly-- refusing to rent housing to them, refusing to hire them for jobs, beating them in the streets, specifically targeting their property for vandalism, that is, not treating them as equal citizens because they're part of said demographic group-- then why shouldn't that group petition for a law that says "you can't treat this group of people as inferior." The purpose of the law in a civil society is to see justice done. When ignorant, prejudiced people are acting unjustly in the absence of a law to remedy their behaviour, it's the responsibility of the legislators and judiciary to intervene to protect those who are mistreated.
Just like how the courts led the way on school desegregation. Just like numerous other examples where courts and legislatures did the right thing before the majority of the vulgar public was willing to.

Side note, when people of a different race make HORRIBLE racially-based slurs at myself or my friends. However, were we to call them on it, we're vile racists and attacking their FOS. I'm sorry, I didn't know the first amendment was about being able to call me a '******'
It's not. It's no more right when other people slander you for your ethnicity, and it doesn't make you "racist" if you challenge their bigotry. If they're calling you out on being privileged (and if it's true that you take certain advantages you have for granted, without consideration for what they cost others) then that's different, but if they're just calling you "white devil" with no idea what you're like then no, that's not right. Obviously.

This isn't a place to debate gay rights. The purpose of this thread is simply to find other like-minded individuals to play Mass Effect with.
I don't want to see this thread locked because a couple dedicated trolls succeeded in derailing it - there are still new players who are signing up on a daily basis and it would be unfair to them.
Oh and Merry Christmas everybody!

I usually play Gold, and occasionally Platinum or Silver.

Wasn't attacking your point, if it seemed that way, chief. Was just complaining.

Imperator Prime on xbl, got a mic.
For all the people saying "what's the use of a thread like this," seemingly oblivious to online homophobia, here's a really basic explanation. Whether we use it or not, whether we limit ourselves to it or not, some of us appreciate a "safe list" of people we can play online with so that if we get talking about our offline lives over the mic (as plenty of people do) we don't have to put up with childish ****s yelling "****" if we mention, for example, our significant other.
It's not so much about "shared interests"-- just because I'm gay doesn't mean that I want to chat with other gay guys about stereotypically 'gay interests' crap like interior design and fashion-- it's about making your experience online more agreeable by selecting a peer group (which is everyone's prerogative) that you can reasonably expect not to treat you like bigoted jagoffs. And while I haven't run into a lot of those, I have PUGed with some in the past. I'd like to hedge my bets against getting them again.
Frankly I think it would be much better to have a "name & shame the racist/sexist/homophobic douchebags" thread where, instead of treating the agreeable people as the exception, we published a list of the disagreeable people we encounter online so that anyone who wants to avoid them can... what? Does xbox or any of the other systems support "ignore lists" and PUG exclusion of the people on them? If not, then maybe this kind of "looking for X" thread is the best we can do.
But the point remains, if you're in the privileged position of never having felt discriminated against or slandered online-- not for how you play but for who you are-- then you aren't fit to judge the selective grouping behaviour of people who aren't. There are in fact plenty of ignorant, hateful idiots online and nobody who prefers to avoid them owes anyone else an explanation or an apology. If you aren't one of those unpleasant people then by all means, join the "in group," but don't make excuses for them or pretend that they aren't out there, because it's unjust to everyone who's encountered them and had a lousy time of it.
So, do you advertise your sexual prefrence online? Because that just screams attention wh0re and you're likely to be abused because you conciously drew attention to it, especially if the person is homophobic. If not, then how the hell do they know? More likely it's the typical juvinille or tongue in cheek insults thrown for no reason other than because they can. Nothing more satisfying than trolling the douchebags. The reactor hazard exists for a reason.
Do you "advertise?"
While on mic with other players have you ever mentioned a girl that you're hot for (or seeing, or married to)? Have you ever commented on the asari or the female quarian's bum? Ever compared notes about that chick in the godaddy commercials with other guy players? Ever mentioned a date you were on with a woman the night before? Ever debated "Miranda versus Ashley?" Or how about this-- even if you haven't, have you called other people out on it when they have? Shut down those conversations with a "would you guys stop flaunting your private lives in everybody else's faces"?
Because here's the thing, most straight people never think of it as they're "advertising their sexual orientation" when they talk about the opposite sex, but as soon as a guy says "I think Kaidan's hot," suddenly they've erected a gaudy neon billboard and they're "screaming" every salacious detail through a megaphone. It's treating the exact same behaviour as okay from straight people but 'deviant' from gay people. It's a double standard and an artifact of privilege-- taking for granted that "it's only a thing when 'the minorities' do it"-- and if you don't see what's wrong with it then you're probably the very kind of person this thread was created to try and get away from.
Pretending there's no such thing as prejudice just because you haven't experienced the sharp end of it is a form of bigotry. If you don't oppose what's unjust, you're complicit. Because barring some physiological defect that renders you incapable of human compassion and decency, apathy and indifference is a choice.
You have a chip on your shoulder and it's going to land you in trouble, or attract the very type of behaviour you rail against.
And I don't care as I don't have those type of conversations. Nor do I see why those conversations would come up with a bunch of random people in MP, it happened among friends, but that's another matter entirely. Bringing up who people find attractive is random in a MP game, unless that's the way the topic went for some strange reason.
Frankly I'm more concerned about the banshee which is about to try and make one of the team her b!tch than anything else. And that's how most of my games go. In random games, if people give me a hard time, I give some back. I don't think it's unjust what they're saying, I just think the person doing it is a c*nt, and they were going to act like that regardless .
I don't oppose it, because I don't care. Just as people have everyright to say what they want, I have everyright to knock their teeth out, if I'm there in person. But frankly if I don't stand up for you, makes me complicit, then a great deal of the population is too. Because they don't care, the vast majority of people have their own lives and problems to worry about. If you think everyone will rally to your cause then your deluding yourself. I like the vast majority, certainly won't oppose it, because I have no problem with it. But I see no reason to actively support or put my time into helping you.
Are you being oppressed, laws passed against you, segregated by force? No. So get of your high horse and realise it's not oppression it's people being idiots and bigots, it's not new, and not a systematic state oppression or widespread cohessive movement to segregate all people who lean one way.
And this is a perfect example. If you spout out your frustrations like this in a random game, then of course you're asking for people throwing barbs at you. Just like any other polarised party on touchy subjects without the commonsence to debate it like adults. They'll call eachother slurs and everything else they can think of. So you can either sulk, or learn to deal with it and accept some people will be utter idots regardless of what stance they take on something. For instance I think you're a bit of an idiot, with a chip on your shoulder. But, I don't hold the smae belief of everybody with that same orientation.
Edit:
For instance, if it bothers you that much, mute the mic. Problem solved. Deal with it like the rest of us, when you meet some idiot online.
