I was looking to find out how to mouse look navigate. In other words, like in the game Fallout 3 or Oblivion Elder scrolls 4 you can move the mouse around and you can see through the players eyes. This way, all I'd have to do would be to aim the player vision, and press W to go forward. How can I do this with this game?
Also is there a way to play first person rather than 3rd person view?
Lastly, I have the Steam version. Is there a way to enable the developers console?
Thanks in advance,
Boof

You can hold right click to move the camera around, and when you're in the top-down tactical view, you can move the camera away from the character by moving your cursor to any of the edges of the screen. Mouse wheel to zoom in and out.
At this time, there's no way to do a first-person perspective AFAIK.

As long as you're not in tactical mode (where the selection circles show up out of combat) then pressing W should move you forward in the direction the camera is pointing.

Is tactical mode default? I have no instruction 'cause I bought it off Steam. How do you toggle tactical mode?
Also, my player does all the fighting without my help. Is that the mode you speak of?
P.S. thanks for your answer!

You can probably right click on your Dragon Age entry and there should be a manual option, it's a nasty pdf though.
The character you currently have selected should be doing almost nothing without your help, they'll continue attacking an enemy you've told them too and will retaliate if attacked but they shouldn't be doing any of the other fighting like using abilities or attacking new targets on their own.

My player & cohorts just start attcking evrything on their own. I've never seen a game where you just click on something & wait while the PC controlls the attacking. That seems pretty lame. Is the whole game like that? I havent even gotten out of the castle yet. I just keep getting ambushed because I cant seem to control the direction & movement.
Steam didnt have the manual. Thanks for the tip though. Also, do you know if cheats work for Steam? It might be easier for me in cheat mode until I get my bearing in this game.

I'm fairly sure steam will have a manual somewhere or other, although the digital manual isn't great it might help explain a few things.
Your companions will act by themselves, you can set up specific behaviors with the tactics screen. You can also use that to select their general behavior for when they'll start attacking, although some experimenting with the options might be needed.
Having the character swing the sword while you just give him commands and activate abilities is pretty standard in RPGs. The Elder Scrolls and Fallout 3 are the exceptions, not Dragon Age. It can get a bit hectic when you're in a difficult fight though so there is some action.
Toggle the movement control (under the portraits) to hold position and then you can click where you want the selected character to go.
I didn't know there were any cheats, but the difficult settings in Bioware games usually have big differences - I wouldn't be surprised if the easiest setting halved the damage your party takes so you could switch to that.
Which class are you playing and what sort of weapon are you using?

I was playing a warrior? i think? and using a sword of some kind. I just reinstalled it because of a glitch so I'll be starting over.
I think you summed it all up in your last post. Every game I've played e.g. every Half life game, every Doom game, Fallout 3, Elder Scrolls 4, Morrowind, Have all had that first person autonomy. Even Mass Effect has some degree of autonomy attack wise though I dont like the 3rd person view.
I guess I thought all RPG's were this way and I'm learning that I was exposed to the exception rather than the norm. I guess since I blew $50 on this game I will continue to try & make it work. It's just not my usual cup of tea.
Yes there are cheats, but they dont seem to work for the Steam version. Steam is great for getting games immediately but I think from now on any new games I get I will have to buy on disk as there seems to be a difference.
I guess for me, ES 4 and Fallout 3 are the best games IMO and there isnt anything out there thats similar. I will have to wait for ES 5 to come out. That should be awesome.
Thanks again for all your help!

I thought Oblivion was a bit balky and dull, I much prefered TES3: Morrowind Myself.
Fallout 1, 2 and tactics all used this style, a lot of people were disappointed when fallout 3 was announced to be a third person game.
Combat like this can be lots of fun, but unfortunately Dragon Age doesn't do it that well. Dragon Age is still well worth playing for the story and characters though and it's worth putting up with the slightly dull combat. Try a mage, the spell selection is limited in DA but they're probably still the most interactive class.

Fallout 3 can be 1st or 3rd person depending on how far in or out you scroll (if you didnt know)
Funny how you liked Morrowind better. Over on the Bethesda website, you have Morrowind fanboys who dont like ES4 and the ES4 people who dont like Morrowind. I think if you played ES4 first like I did, the Morrowind seem real dated though I still trying to push on through it.
The only thing that has me still interested in DA is the story. As far as being a game I think it fails IMO. It's too much of a PITA to play. Bad contols and no first person fighting. Bleh...

Left mouse button is for selecting units.
As for cheats, you need to right-click Dragon Age: Origins in the the My Games list, choose properties, and click "Set Launch Options" and then type "-enabledeveloperconsole" into the box that appears. You can now use cheats if you follow other instructions found for instance in GameFAQs.com

The controls are fine, I think you just need to get used to them. I do agree with your overall assessment though, the combat was a bit dull. Although playing it straight after men of war probably didn't help

Hi all
I finally spent some time reconfiguring the controls around a bit so that at least now I can control the game better. Since I'm left handed, using the lft right arrows to pan camera was better than A and D.
Also, I enabled the cheat codes, edited the ini file like I found on the net, but I have no idea wether they're working or not because there's no indication as to whether it worked or not (they said there wouldnt be) so we'll see. I havent died yet. I love the story so far.
P.S. I just saw today on the ne that there is a gay scene in the movie.... its pretty explicit, it's on you tube. Lovely...............
Why couldnt it be Carmen Electra?
