Lets say we get what we want...Shepard lives and rides off into the sunset, love interest by his/her side.  How is this still "rainbows and unicorns" or the "Ice Cream" ending that Penny Arcade snidely mocks us with today?
Discounting the Magic Expository Starchild ending and working backward through the series, just from what I can quickly remember, we've got:

 • Anderson dying
 • Two companions dying on the way to the beam
 • Hammer landing fleet dying
 • Lots o' ships in orbit dying as you invade
 • Citadel taken over by reapers; millions of Citadel civillians turned into Reaper chow.
 • Asari homeworld invaded; billions dead.
 • Tali possible suicide.
 • Either the Quarians or the Geth as an entire race dying if you don't make peace between them.
 • Other minor race's homeworlds invaded: Elcor, Volus, etc. Billions dead.
 • Samara's daughter dead, possibly Samara herself from suicide.
 • Rachni race possibly dead (again).
 • Mordin dead.
 • Krogan homeworld invaded.  Can't say billions dead because there might not be that many, but yeah, they're dying too.
 • Grissom Academy kids possibly dead.
 • Krogan race going extinct if you don't cure the genophage.
 • Thane dead.
 • Hundreds if not thousands of Citadel citizens dead in Udina's coup attempt.
 • Turian homeworld invaded.  Billions dead.
 • Earth invaded.  Billions dead.
 • Entire Batarian Hegemony eaten by Reapers.
 • Collector base possibly in the hands of Cerberus
 • Zero, a few, or all of your companions dead during the suicide run on the Collector base.
 • Normandy crewmembers, liquified and turned into a protein shake for a baby Reaper.
 • Human colony of Horizon, taken by Collectors.
 • Whole bunch of human colonies throughout the Attican Traverse and Terminus Systems, taken by Collectors.
 • The entire Council, possibly dead.
 • Whole Human and Turian fleets dead in Sovereign's attack on the Citadel.
 • Citadel citizens dead in Saren's attack.
 • Eden Prime, victims of Sovereign's first attack.
Help me out, I'm sure I missed more than a few.  How is having trillions and trillions of sentient beings dead and the entireity of galactic civilization almost destroyed a freakin' HAPPY ENDING?  Did they have to murder Shepard too, just to prove how emo, artsy and angsty they can be?

Yeah, we should have a choice for a "brighter" ending, because the ride up to this point has been pretty damn grim.

+1 Exactly my thoughts. Why can't Shepard survive and have 1-2 buddies and his LI with him?

I support the idea that at least one of the main characters in the game should be shown to be happy. Someone must surely express hope for the future and themselves, even if Shepard dies.

imagine playing a sports game for several hours and then say winning the league or a major tournament after several seasons of hard work.

Would you not be gutted if the game did not show you lifting the trophy. That's what Bioware did. They took away our trophy.

We want to see the trophy. We want to see what Shepard has actually achieved.

Yes, I most definitely want a happy ending in my gamut of ending scenarios I'd like to see from Bioware. Whether or not some people don't want a happy ending is irrelevant for them, because likely, they'll not work for it. But as others have said, the Mass Effect series is about CHOICE and for those of us who want to experience happy endings, please bring them in!

I want a happy ending. Not perfectly happy, but i want shep alive with his LI, the mass relays and the citadels intact, and an awards ceremony of some kind. Past that, i really dont care. Though at thisnpoint, I'd like an ending that made sense.

I agree with "happy ending" part. I do not want just any ending (dark, grim, etc.). I want ending I was strugling for through 3 games...

Not saying there shouldn't be the happy one, and a bad one for that matter. All types of endings should've been covered.

You mean like that which they promised us in the begining? Yeah, I wish for that too.

I want a happy ending, with turian/blue/krogan/space biotic babies, depending on your state. I want a bittersweet ending, with a destroyed galaxy and a glimpse of hope. I also want an epic fail ending, in which the Reapers win.
In short, I want multiple endings. As promised.

I think one of my biggest problems with the idea that Shepard HAS to die, is, why him? I'm all for noble sacrifice, but the endings as they are seemed more focused on creating reasons to kill off Shepard than reasons for him to give his life. I almost felt like Bioware's writing team was sitting around saying, "Okay, so we want to kill off Shepard, but how?" The explanations from the starchild felt hollow/confusing/badly explained, as if he was really just waiting to say "Pick which color you kill yourself in" in the end.

As was stated earlier in this thread, trillions of lives have already been lost; why is it so hard to believe that Shepard was one of the ones who made it through? Shepard living doesn't make him any less of a hero, and in fact some ways makes him more of one. Noble sacrifice? How about Shepard being such a cosmic badass that even a death trap made to "save" the galaxy can't kill him? As some people have proposed, I don't expect it to be an easy ending to achieve, but after sitting helpless through cut scenes such as those where Kai Leng inexplicably escaped time and again (ignoring the fact that my Vanguard Shep literally sat on top of him spamming Biotic Charge and Nova at will), I'd like to be given a chance to show exactly why my Shepard is the most feared man in the galaxy. Don't make it easy (war never is), but give me the opportunity.

Wow. Just completed the game.

Ending is as bad as everyone says.

How do I know I had the best ending?

The fate of everyone else is not explaned.

And what's that after the credits?

Was that the planet the normandy crashed on?

Happy would be fine but I'd still settle for an ending that makes sense, even a little.

I posted my support in a similar thread a few days ago, but I'll add it here as well; I'd like an option for a more hopeful ending. I mean, they're on the way towards it already, with the high-EMS Destroy cutscene of Shepard breathing. Just cull the stupid "Normandy On A Whacky Jungle Planet" garbage and replace it with a devastated Earth-side reunion and I would be happier.

Goroxx's post well illustrates my opinion on the thing. Even if Shepard lives to have his spacebabies, it's hardly the happy Disney ending detractors would have everyone believe. If anything, it's TRULY the bittersweet ending they wanted; you get to live, but have to do so with the full knowledge of all the terrible costs of the war. As it is, the endings are just plain old bitter. And stupid.

I just need something that makes sense and is ultimately satisfying (where I feel good about whats gone down at the end of the game, even if its bittersweet). Not last minute, retarded, plot hole filled BS.  Oh and no f***ing space magic, get that sythesis crap out of here.

I though oh damn maybe I screwed something up over ME1-3 and as a consequence got this ending. Didn't think it was a big deal until I youtubed every ending and realized they're all the same.
