I might as well say that you seem to just want a class with Device Mastery, as that skill seems to factor heavily in your idea of what constitutes a "real rogue".

That is fair.  I don't necessarily want/need Device Mastery, it's just that it seems to me that Zevran needs Device Mastery because his Cunning is so, so low.  I don't mind missing out on a few chests.  It's just that he seems to miss out on 1/3 of chests, even after me pumping his woeful Cunning & going DM I-DM II.  And giving him Traps I/II.  There seems to be no way to steer him to be my Rogue-Rogue instead of a Warrior-Rogue.

It's basically just that he didn't even try to be a Rogue.  It'd be one thing if he was a hybrid & I could "Spec him as a Rogue" or "Spec him as a gimped-Warrior".  It's just that he went & auto-Spec'ed himself as a gimp'ed Warrior &, given the way Traps/Locks work in this world, there's simply no way for me to make him a useful Rogue.

Plus...

Even if the game did give me a DW warrior, he wouldn't be able to stealth. And besides http://social.biowar.../index/223777/1 seemed to give the overall DPS edge to backstabbing rogues anyway, though it's not a perfect comparison, as it's a PC DW Warrior to a PC Rogue instead of Zevran to Bob, the NPC DW DPS Warrior (and it's all theorycraft at any rate).

...he can't backstab, although I grant you your next point...

You also keep insisting he cannot backstab because he does not have Combat Movement, but that's quite easy to pick up.

...it is easy to pick up, but my point is that he's not good at either being a Rogue or being a DPS, given that he's always 1-3 Talents away from being half-decent at either one, *when you recuit him*.

He requires babysitting, either way.  He's not viable from Day 1 & is, more-or-less, gimped from Day 1, no matter which way you want to take him.  Moreso if you want to make him your Rogue, which is my main complaint, obviously, but even if you wanted him to be a DPS & you had another Rogue to handle... um, Rogue stuff, he's not suited for that, either.  He's noob Spec'd, basically, no matter what you want him to be (but moreso a Rogue, in case I didn't emphasize that enough :) .

Build Zevran as a dps'er/stunner and you won't regret it.

My first playthrough was as a rogue and i got every rank of the lockpicking skills + major cunning skill, opened all chests i could find and i didn't get ANYTHING worth the trouble.

The only marginally usefull outcome of opening chests is the 10-50XP you gain. The contents are very disappointing.

Back to Zevran; He's a dps'er, not a "group tool'er". If you want a group tool'er, go with lelianna.

Imrahil: I understand the want to be able to open as many locked chests as you can (10-30xp ea.). What I can't understand is why you can not return later to those you failed on and get them open once he has the ability matured?

Is it a bit of tedium to back-track? Perhaps, but Zevran is a plot-driven character who's sole storyline purpose is to try to kill you (maybe once, maybe twice). They can't make him the perfect assassin that he should be, or your game would flash the "game over" screen and the story would end there and then, so there is going to be a flaw to give him weakness ...

I didn't even use Zevran once in any of my play-thrus -nor to unlock the training - so I understand the point you make - yet I also accept that some things are done to further the storyline that trump mechanics.

The mods are made to further customize your game to fit your individual needs, we are lucky as a community that there is support for our needs. I hope the auto-respec mod and whatever else you use to customize your game provides you the enjoyment you are seeking.

good luck.

Lol i dont believe this.

Zav is insanely powerful and does stupid amounts of damage when behind stuff.

Paralyze runes + Coup de Grace + expensive equipment with 2 1H swords and good bombs/poison = godlike character. I use mass paralyze from mage, al draws fire from enemies, zav rapes everything. gg. infinite stamina with the assassin talent allowing regen from kills.

also hilarious character in banter and stories.

Zevran's built for damage. In my playthrough I got zev and used 2 books of skill(the ones that teach abilities) on him to up his lockpicking, and after only 2 levels he was the ideal rogue a party could have... Proper lockpick, awsome damage and stealth... Imo he's tons better than lelianna... If you don't wanna waste those 2 tomes on him, pick him up, leave him in camp for 4 levels and pick him up again when he's ready to go with 4/4 lockpicking.

In terms of damage he's way better than lelianna, imo... Personally I considered my rogue playthrough somewhat of a waste only because he was only about as good as zev :P

Zevran is an assassin, not a thief. And Zevran excels at being an assassin, doing assassinesque stuff, such as goddamn backstabbing.

I use Zevran religiously. The thing is, you take him for DPS not for scouting. He fills in that role nicely, but if you want to open everything/detect all traps, you'll need another rogue. Or grab a couple Tomes of Physical Technique and plug a few free points into Device Mastery. But he's lethal if you level up the assassin and dual weapon skills appropriately, and he ends up getting the killing blows in quite a few of my plays.
