Seeing how well they handled Mordin, Thane, and Legion's deaths/ roles in ME3, I have to go with Miranda. I know she had a bigger role than her other ME3 counterparts, but I never really understood why she couldn't just join Shepard. She could've provided a valuable information link with Cerberus.
If you could have one ME2 squadmate in ME3, who would it be?

Well, since Mordin is unavailable... Either Zaeed or Grunt.

I got Garrus. I'm happy. I got the old team back and I'm happy about it.

Jack.
Jack has the most to gain and the most to offer out of the 8 characters that become war assets, especially if she gets to have nova or biotic charge. her redesign is great, she's hard to kill once you're inside the collector base (Her spot in the hold the line score actually leads to her being difficult to get killed unless specifically gunning for her) Narratively she has the least to lose by joining shepard. Miranda wouldn't be able to join until late in the game, but jack is the first me2 war asset you can get.
I used to hate jack in ME2 but now in ME3 she's probably my favorite side character (badass ponytail)

I actually liked EDI but felt like they didn't really think her through. There were times she would be talking like she was still on the Normady, when she was in my party.
To be fair, she was. Tight beam comms allowed her to use the body off of the Normandy.

In terms of your question: Grunt.
I got used to depending upon a Krogan as my "tank." James Vega was a decent character ... I just never felt comfortable with him despite taking him for nearly every mission.
Of course, I would have preferred Wrex to Grunt if given the choice.
Kasumi would be a close second to Grunt. There was something that I enjoyed about her character. She's a bit too optimistic I suppose for the feel of the game. Her bright and sunny disposition would either have died in the face of everything that we were doing (which is hinted at in her missions on the Citadel) or she would have stood out significantly from everyone else.

It should have been any particular Shepard's LI, so for me it would be Jack. Failing that, Legion had such potential!
But I would have accepted any alien. something to break up the Human monotony of the crew.

Legion or Mordin. Mordin can live, I did it the second time, just don't tell anyone about what Dalatrass told you, and when you meet up with Mordin, convince him not to go up, he'll be a War Asset though and help build the Crucible.

So is it not possible to have peace with the geth and Quarians and have both Legion and Tali live?
